Oil-free vs oil-lubricated air compressor

Updated: 21.10.2026

You searched for an oil-free compressor to avoid oil changes and oil in a spray gun, and someone is telling you to buy a belt-drive oiled machine instead. Both answers fit a different day. For tyres, a brad nailer and a small gun, an oil-free versus oil-lubricated decision lands on oil-free. If the pump must run most of the hour, and you will service it, it lands on oil-lubricated. The oil-free prices are on the [oil-free air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/air-compressor-oil-free). This page does not rank those eleven listings. The Products Compared editorial team used the 19 October 2026 listings and the guides below, and did not endurance-test either type. They solve different days

Oil-free, in this set, means a 230 V piston with no sump. You do not check a sight glass, and you do not tip oil into the airline from the pump. ABAC’s UK guide points home garages and light use that way. The pump fills a 6, 8 or 24 litre tank, stops, and waits. That is a Saturday. It is not a booth that stays open all afternoon. Oil-lubricated, in this argument, is usually a belt-drive piston with a sump. The belt lets the pump turn slower, the oil carries heat, and the machine is meant to be serviced. Garden Review’s comparison tells DIYers to buy oil-free for intermittent work and a belt-drive oiled compressor when the workshop runs for hours. A 97 dB direct-drive unit is still the wrong all-day answer, even though it has no oil change. If the job is already short, the best oil-free air compressor page names a quiet 24 litre pick.

Oil in the pump and oil in the air

An oil-free DIY piston keeps a metered oil feed out of the compression chamber. An oil-lubricated piston can send mist down the hose unless you separate it. Painters care because that mist leaves fisheyes. Sealey’s instructions say not to fit an oiler on a spray line. An oiled compressor used for paint needs filtration you maintain. Water still condenses in both types. Oil-free does not mean dry, and it does not mean breathing air. Do not import an industrial screw into a £150 garage choice. Atlas Copco’s UK explainer is about oil-injected versus oil-free screws, and an industrial piston leaflet quotes lives around 20,000 hours lubricated and 16,000 hours oil-free for that range. Those hours are not this amazon set. A DIY oil-free piston is not a class 0 screw. The spray painting page stays with the gun and the water. Here, oil in the pump is a service item and a contamination risk. No oil is a wear and a duty-cycle limit.

How long it can run

Duty cycle is the share of an hour the pump may run. Hyundai’s amazon table states 25 per cent for the HY5508 and the HY7524. In an hour that is about 15 minutes of pumping, spread so the motor can cool, not one block you then repeat. Garden Review quotes about 50 per cent as typical for direct-drive oil-free pumps, and about 80–90 per cent for belt-drive oiled machines. Those are that guide’s figures, not a test of these ASINs, and 50 per cent is looser than Hyundai’s 25. Use Hyundai’s number on those two models. Treat 50 per cent as a rule of thumb only where the listing is silent. Do not paste either number onto an Einhell or a Draper that states no duty cycle. Garden Review also puts oil-free pumps around 2,000–3,000 hours and oiled belt-drive pumps around 10,000–15,000. That is the article’s range, not a count from these reviews. Saturday tyres will not burn 2,000 hours quickly. A pump that runs most of every hour will. Heat shows up in the oil-free file: a HYCHIKA that gets hot, and one that smoked on day one. An oiled pump that never has its oil changed does not collect the long life either. Used oil wants authorised disposal, not a drain.

Noise, tipping and the title check

Oil-free is not a synonym for quiet. The Hyundai 24 litre is listed at 60 dB and reviewers talk beside it. The Draper and the suitcase are oil-free and listed at 97 dB. The 50 litre Einhell is oil-free and listed at 95 dB. The Einhell silent 24 litre prints 57 dB LpA. The ABAC prints 49 dBA with no distance and no review text in the saved listing. An oiled belt-drive can be the quieter workshop machine because the pump turns slower. Quiet and oil-free are two filters. Keep an oiled compressor upright. Laying it over puts sump oil where the pump will push it into the hose. Several oil-free listings, including the Einhell 50 litre, say the motor can travel in any position because there is nothing to spill. You still drain condensate with the machine off. Tipping an oiled tank to hurry the water is how you mix the two problems. Read the title before it joins an oil-free basket. If it says lubricated, it is a different category, with an oil check and a different transport rule. One lubricated listing was removed from this comparison for that reason. You do not need its name. You need the word. If the title says oil-free and the specification then prints an oil capacity, believe the capacity.

Common questions

Which should I buy for a home garage?
Oil-free, if the jobs are tyres, a brad nailer, a blow gun and a small spray pass, and the pump spends most of the hour stopped. Buy oil-lubricated belt-drive if the compressor must run most of the hour and you will change the oil and keep it upright. A 97 dB oil-free pump is not the home-garage answer to either description.
Will an oil-free pump wear out on Saturdays?
Not from Saturday use alone. Hour figures in buying guides describe a life under load, not a weekend tyre. Hyundai states 25 per cent duty cycle on the HY5508 and HY7524, which limits how long the motor runs in an hour. Heat, smoke and a no-start after the machine has sat are the notes in these reviews. Unplug a hot or smoking machine. That is not proof that intermittent DIY kills the pump in a season.
Do I have to change oil on an oil-free machine?
No. There is no sump. You still drain water after use. An oil-lubricated compressor does need oil changes, and the used oil wants authorised disposal. If the title says oil-free and the page is silent on oil capacity, do not invent a service interval. If it prints a capacity, it is not the oil-free machine you searched for.
Can I spray from an oiled compressor?
Yes, if you keep oil out of the gun with filtration you maintain, and with no oiler on the spray hose. Sealey forbids that oiler because mist marks paint. An oil-free pump avoids the mist and still leaves water, so you drain and trap either way. A full-size gun that needs continuous flow often wants the oiled belt-drive. A touch-up gun is the simpler oil-free airline, limited by the plate on the gun.
What is a duty cycle in practice?
The fraction of an hour the pump may run. Hyundai’s table says 25 per cent on two models, about 15 minutes of pumping in an hour, with time to cool. A 50 per cent figure in general guides is a rule of thumb, and it is looser than Hyundai’s line. Belt-drive oiled machines are quoted around 80–90 per cent in the same kind of guide. If the motor never rests, you are over the duty cycle whatever the badge says.
Are oil-free machines always quieter?
No. Oil-free describes lubrication, not noise. This set prints 49 dBA on the ABAC, 57 dB LpA on the Einhell silent 24 litre, and 60 dB on the Hyundais, with distances missing. The Draper, the suitcase and the 50 litre Einhell are oil-free and listed at 95–97 dB. Read the decibel line. Do not treat the words oil-free as a silencer.
How do I spot an oiled machine in oil-free results?
Look for lubricated in the title, or an oil capacity, grade or sight glass in the specification. amazon.co.uk still mixes the two in one search. A direct-drive oil-free pump and a belt-drive oiled pump can share a tank size and a bar rating. If the box includes a bottle of oil, you have left this category, and the instruction not to add oil no longer applies.
