Oil-free air compressor buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You have a brad nailer, a set of tyres, or a small spray gun, and the amazon.co.uk page leads with 8 bar and a large CFM figure. That pair does not tell you whether the pump will keep the tool running. This oil-free air compressor buying guide is the method behind the [oil-free air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/air-compressor-oil-free): match the air the tool uses, then the tank, then the noise claim, then the price. Shelf prices on 19 October 2026 run from about £83 to £212.95. We checked those listings and did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the tool, not the tank

Every machine here already claims 8 bar, or about 116 psi, and the 50 litre Einhell claims 10 bar. Pressure is rarely the scarce thing. Volume at the pressure your tool wants is the scarce thing. ABAC’s UK buying guide puts inflation around 30–60 litres per minute, nailers around 60–85, airbrushing around 30–85 at 2–4 bar, and spraying around 115–170 litres per minute. Those are bands, not a promise that your gun sits in the middle. A brad nailer fires and waits. A 6 or 8 litre receiver can cover that if the pump refills between shots, which is how reviewers use the Hyundai HY5508X at £129.99 and the Bimson 8 litre at £99.99. A fence panel does not pause. A 6 litre Draper at £102.27, listed at 97 dB, will empty and then roar. On the Hyundai HY7524X, reviewers put cut-out nearer 7 bar, about 100 psi, than the 8 bar in the title. The best oil-free air compressor page names a quiet-garage pick. It does not change this order.

Read the airflow line twice

Displacement is what the pump sucks in. Free air delivery is what leaves the outlet at a stated pressure, and it is lower. Einhell’s datasheet for the related TE-AC 50 Silent shows suction of 270 litres per minute and output of 90 litres per minute at 7 bar. That sheet is not these amazon listings. The Hyundai HY7524X bullets say 5.2 CFM and 150 litres per minute. The specification table says 2.65 CFM. Toolden, a UK retailer, states free air delivery of 75 litres per minute, about 3 CFM, beside that 5.2 CFM displacement. Do not treat 5.2 CFM as continuous air at the gun. Some guides say halve a displacement figure when free air delivery is missing. That halving is their rule of thumb, not a British Standard. The Hyundai 8 litre bullets say 4 CFM, and the specification says 2 cubic centimetres per minute, which is not an airflow. HYCHIKA prints 160 litres per minute and 60 litres per minute. The Bimson 24 litre at £114.99 states no airflow. If two figures disagree, keep both. Do not average them.

Tank, noise and the plug

Six to nine litres suit a tyre, a brad nailer or an airbrush. Twenty-four litres is the usual home-garage receiver, because the pump can rest while you use the stored air. The suitcase Einhell at £83 is listed at 97 dB, and a tank field of 190 litres conflicts with a 5 kg case and with reviews that say there is no tank. One UK review says the blast falls away after about a second. Noise here is a claim, not a test we ran. The ABAC prints 49 dBA with no distance. The Einhell silent 24 litre prints 57 dB as LpA, still with no distance. Both Hyundais print 60 dB with no LpA or LwA label. The Draper, the 50 litre Einhell and the suitcase print 95–97 dB. Mains are 230 V. A domestic socket wants a BS 1363 plug, or a compliant conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse, under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Both Hyundais are listed at up to 13 A, and the 8 litre bullet says a standard 13 A UK plug. The ABAC box includes a Type G adaptor. Most outlets are Euro quick couplings. The how to use an oil-free air compressor page is the first start and the drain.

The one legal line that changes a 50 litre buy

The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 except non-steam systems under 250 bar litres from the written-scheme rules. HSE’s INDG178 says a receiver at or above 250 bar litres is likely to need a scheme, from a competent person, before you use it as work equipment. Twenty-four litres at 8 bar is 192, under the line. Fifty litres at 10 bar is 500, over it. That is not a demand that a householder book an inspection before inflating a tyre on a 24 litre hobby unit. It is a reason to pause if the 50 litre Einhell, at £212.95 and 95 dB, is work equipment. Oil-free does not remove the drain. Condensate still forms, and the air is not breathing air under BS EN 12021. Paint and water are the spray painting page.

Common questions

What tank do I need for a brad nailer versus a spray gun?
A brad nailer that fires and waits can live on a 6 or 8 litre receiver if the pump refills between shots. ABAC’s DIY band for nailers is about 60–85 litres per minute. Spraying in that guide is about 115–170 litres per minute at 2–4 bar, and a 6 litre tank will not hold it. Read the gun’s plate before you trust either band. A 24 litre machine is the usual garage step up.
Why do two airflow numbers appear on one listing?
One is often displacement, and the other is a smaller figure in the specification table. The Hyundai HY7524X prints 5.2 CFM in the bullets and 2.65 CFM in the table. HYCHIKA prints 160 litres per minute and 60 litres per minute. Amazon does not always say which figure is free air delivery, or at what pressure. Keep both. Do not average them, and do not pick the larger one because it matches the title.
Does 60 dB mean I can run it in a garage next to the house?
Sixty decibels on the Hyundai listings has no distance and no LpA or LwA label. Reviewers say they can talk beside those machines, which is not the same as a sound test. The Einhell silent 24 litre prints 57 dB as LpA, still without a distance. Neither line settles a neighbour dispute. Employer noise duties start at 80 dB(A) under the Noise at Work Regulations 2005, and they do not apply to a householder’s Saturday.
Will a 50 litre, 10 bar compressor need an inspection?
If you use it as work equipment, treat 50 litres at 10 bar as 500 bar litres, over the 250 line in HSE guidance, so a competent person should draw up a written scheme before use. A householder’s 24 litre machine at 8 bar is 192 bar litres and sits under that written-scheme exemption. The 50 litre listing is also 95 dB. This page cannot certify the scheme.
What plug should I expect on a 230 V machine?
A BS 1363 plug, or a compliant conversion plug with the correct BS 1362 fuse. The 8 litre Hyundai bullet says a standard 13 A UK plug, and both Hyundais list up to 13 A. The ABAC includes a Type G adaptor rather than stating a moulded plug. Check the photo of the plug. Most air outlets here are Euro couplings, which is a separate mismatch and just as able to stop the first job.
Do I still drain an oil-free tank?
Yes. Oil-free means no sump to check. Water still condenses, and a listed drain or condensation trap is there to be used. Drain after use, with the machine off and the jet pointed away from you. The air is still not breathing air. Leaving a steel receiver wet is how it rusts from the inside.
