How to install a wireless video doorbell

Updated: 16 October 2026

The box is on the hall floor, the door might be timber, uPVC or steel, and you would rather not drill until you know the picture survives the wall. This is how to install a wireless video doorbell that brings its own screen: charge both parts, pair them in the same room, walk the monitor to the chair you actually use, then fix the outdoor unit. The kit should already be chosen on the [wireless video door intercom comparison](/hub/burglar-protection/wireless-video-door-intercom). The Products Compared editorial team did not fit these units on a test door. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Charge and pair before any holes

Charge the outdoor unit and the indoor screen. On the 7 inch kits the monitor battery is listed at about 5–8 hours, and reviewers leave those screens on a lead, so run the test from the charger. Reviews of the £52.99 Winnes say the outdoor unit has to come off the plate to charge, and one UK review says no power pack was in the box. On a push-to-talk kit you hold the button to speak and release it to listen. SwitchBot only promises a strong link within about 5 metres.

Mounting height, tape and screws

Ring’s UK guide for a battery doorbell puts the outdoor unit about 1.2 metres above the ground. The Planning Portal’s CCTV conditions include a camera not sited below 2.5 metres. Where that condition applies, check the Portal before you copy the 1.2 metre mark. Tape is the renter’s trial. Door Chimes UK warns that adhesive fails in cold, damp British weather. One ACEBELL review says the pad fell off after two days, and the £52.99 Winnes bell lifts off a plate that is not locked down. On a communal door or a fire door, ask the landlord first. If this door cannot take the kit, the buying guide is where you change the choice.

When you stop

Stop when the job is no longer a battery and a USB lead. A new transformer circuit is notifiable under Part P in England and Wales, and the work still has to meet BS 7671. One ACEBELL UK buyer found wires at the rear and no mains plug, so a permanent feed could not be finished from the box. If the unit itself is faulty, section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject it.

Common questions

Will tape hold on uPVC in winter?
Treat tape as a trial you can afford to lose. Door Chimes UK says adhesive pads fail in cold, damp British weather, and a metal face also weakens the radio. In this set an ACEBELL pad fell off after two days, and the £52.99 Winnes bell lifts off a plate that does not lock. Screws are the fixing that stays, where you are allowed to make the hole. A rented or communal door needs the landlord’s permission first.
How do I know the monitor will work in the kitchen?
Pair on the table, then carry the monitor to the kitchen and press the bell from outside. You want a picture and two-way speech from the chair you use, not from the hallway side of the door. SwitchBot only calls the link strong within about 5 metres and one wall in a flat. If the kitchen is further than that, or a steel door sits in between, expect the picture to drop. A fail in the kitchen is a buying problem, not a screw problem.
What if the door is metal?
A steel or aluminium door can block a 2.4 GHz link even when the listing quotes a long open-air range. The SIMBAILAI listing says aluminium doors and Wi-Fi shorten a 500 metre claim. Test with the monitor just inside the door, then in the next room, before you drill. If the picture dies at the threshold, move the indoor unit closer or choose a different kit. Metal also makes adhesive a worse bet, because the radio and the pad are both having a bad day.
Do I need an electrician for a USB charger?
A USB lead into a socket you already use does not need an electrician. That includes a monitor you leave plugged in because the battery lasts an afternoon. You do need an electrician when the job becomes a new circuit or a transformer you cannot identify. Part P in England and Wales makes a new circuit notifiable, and the finished work has to meet BS 7671. One ACEBELL buyer could not finish a permanent feed because the box had rear wires and no mains plug to suit them.
Should I aim the lens at the pavement?
Aim it at your own step. A 160–170° lens will still collect pavement, a shared landing or a neighbour’s path if you point it down the street for a wider view of callers. The ICO includes doorbells in home CCTV, and footage beyond your boundary brings UK GDPR duties: a reason, a limit, a sign, secure storage, deletion and a reply. Night vision does not change that test. Check the frame in daylight and again after dark, because infrared bloom can show more of the path than the daytime picture.
