Scaffold trestle for decorating

Updated: October 2026

You want a short platform to paint a wall, a ceiling edge or a stairwell, and a scaffold trestle for decorating sounds like the hire kit painters already use. Hire pages mean a bandstand and boards, with a load line in the 460 kg class. The amazon.co.uk frames in the [scaffold trestle comparison](/hub/workshop/scaffold-trestle) use the same words and a different rating. None of the kept bullets clearly include a person plus boards. Listings were read on 19 October 2026. Products Compared did not stand on these frames, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a decorating platform is

Hire pages sell painters' trestles as adjustable steel platforms. Jewson puts a size 2 around 660–1,160 mm with loads up to 460 kg. That is a frame you board and stand on, not the 58 cm HOMCOM top and not one trestle at 110 kg. The Home Builders Federation paper of June 2018 uses 600 mm as a default for unguarded trestles. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 still apply if a fall could injure you. That paper is not the statute.

Read the load before you climb

Brennenstuhl's MB 110 states 110 kg, and a listing line says it is suited to painting. Reviews say the height is too low, and one states about 0.70 m. That 110 kg line is not an allowance for you plus a board, and one frame is not both ends of a wall. Do not add HOMCOM's 100 kg bullet to the 200 kg field. One UK review calls the pair too flimsy to stand on while decorating. Draper's 250 kg line is not a platform rating. The four-pack also says the bracket is not for supporting individuals. A rest, rather than a platform, is on best scaffold trestle.

Brennenstuhl Brennenstuhl MB 110
8.3/10about £16.78

Height for a brush, not for a ceiling

The MB 110 prints no working height. Reviews put the top around 0.70 m, close to the catalogue figure of 0.71 m. Reviewers who tried to paint from it say it is too low. HOMCOM prints 80–130 cm and Draper prints 810–1,300 mm. That is a rest for timber, not a place to stand without edge protection. Pins and span are on how to set up a scaffold trestle.

When painting means a hop-up or a hire trestle

A patch, a door head or a curtain pole is one person in one place. A hop-up with its own deck is the simpler object: scaffold trestle or hop-up. You then read a rating that can include the user. A run along a room is the hire bandstand at about 460–470 kg. Selco's sizes 1 to 3 were about £39.60 to £52.20 including VAT.

Common questions

Can I decorate from these trestles?
Not as a standing platform. The load lines are 110 kg, 250 kg, or 100 kg each against a separate 200 kg field, and none clearly include a person plus boards. One HOMCOM review says the pair is too flimsy to stand on while decorating. The generic bullet says the bracket is not for supporting individuals. Use them to rest timber. For a deck, hire a bandstand or buy a hop-up.
Is the Brennenstuhl high enough to paint a wall?
Reviews say no for painting from the trestle. One states about 0.70 m, close to the catalogue height of 0.71 m, and the listing prints no range. A line that mentions painting does not override that. At about 0.70 m you can rest tools while you stand on the floor. It is not a step up to a ceiling.
Will the HOMCOM pair take me and a board?
The listing does not say so. The bullet is 100 kg each and the details field is 200 kg, which are not a combined standing rating. One UK review calls them too flimsy to stand on while decorating and adequate for a light worktop. The open width is 58 cm, under the 600 mm HSE treats as usual for an access platform.
Do I need guard-rails for a low painting platform?
If you work from the trestle, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply wherever a fall could injure you. For construction work that includes a top guard-rail of at least 950 mm, a gap of no more than 470 mm, and a toe board. The HBF 600 mm figure is a paper, not an exemption. These frames do not list rail posts.
Is a hop-up simpler for one wall?
Yes, when one person stands in one place and the hop-up's own label includes the user. You avoid spanning boards between two saw horses. A hop-up is still work at height. Move it rather than overreach, and do not gain height with blocks.
What load includes a person plus boards?
Hire bandstands in these sources state about 460–470 kg at that seller's spacing, on a top built for several boards. The 110 kg, 250 kg and 100 kg bullets here do not say they include you. A Youngman Odd Job example states 150 kg including the user, tools and materials. That figure is that product's line, not every hop-up's rating.
When is a hired size 2 the honest decorating tool?
When you need boards, a width for four boards, and a stated load in the 460 kg class, at a height band around 0.7–1.2 m. That is what hire pages mean by a painter's trestle. It is the wrong search if you only need to rest a door, which is the job the reviewed trestles here are described as doing.
