Bench power supply for electronics repair

Updated: October 2026

A bench power supply for electronics repair replaces a guessed battery rail with a voltage you chose and a current the track can survive. Ten amps on the title is headroom, not the current for a phone board. This page matches the job to a listing in our [laboratory power supply comparison](/hub/workshop/laboratory-power-supply). Products Compared did not lab-test these units or repair a board with them. Prices and review lines are amazon.co.uk figures as of 16 October 2026. What a repair bench asks of the supply

Hobby repair needs a known DC rail and a limit you set, whether that is 5 V for logic or 12 V for a module. RS describes the current limit as the feature that means a short does not have to destroy the board. For hobby boards, 0–30 V covers the rails you meet, and a few amps is enough for breadboard logic. Ten amps is spare capacity for motors, LED runs or 12 V tinkering. A bench rail beats a battery only if the limit is set before the clips go on.

Which listing fits the repair

Breadboard work in the UK reviews lands on the RUZIZAO SPS-E3010, listed at £39.99. It is 150 W, so 10 A exists only up to 15 V, and 30 V only up to 5 A. The Nankadf WPS305H (£49.99, 4.5 from 1,045) is the best value inside 0–30 V and 0–5 A. Skip it above 5 A. The Jesverty SPS-3010V (£50.99, 4.6 from 915) is the top pick when a general 30 V bench may want 10 A. Skip it for a quiet linear rail or a second output, and check the rear panel: the bullets say 115/230 V selectable and the table says 115 V. The Wanptek 30 V 10 A (£50.92) is the other 300 W switcher UK reviews use for home electronics repair. One top pick and one best-value pick are on best bench power supply. Noise figures sit on linear vs switching power supply.

The limit is the repair tool

On a faulty board you want constant current: the supply holds the current you set and the voltage falls. The CC lamp means that stop has arrived, not that the supply is broken. A Jesverty reviewer found three posts and still only one output.

Jobs these listings should refuse

Do not use these supplies as a lithium-ion charger. Constant current, then constant voltage, is how the box behaves into a load. It does not count charge or stop at a cell voltage. The RUZIZAO R-SPS4001S (£319.96, 0–400 V at up to 1 A, 4.0 from two reviews) is the wrong tool for a phone board or a breadboard. BS EN 61010-1 covers shock from live terminals when the output is on, so leave it unless you already work at that voltage. Do not open a dead supply. The knob order is on how to use a bench power supply.

Common questions

Is a bench supply better than batteries for repair?
It is the better source when the voltage stays where you set it and the current stops at a ceiling you chose. A battery sags, and a short takes what the pack can deliver. Leave the limit at the title maximum and the bench supply is a stiffer source than those cells.
What voltage and current do hobby boards need?
A 0–30 V supply covers 3.3 V, 5 V and 12 V boards. A few amps is enough for breadboard logic. Ten amps is headroom, not a current to set on a phone board. The RUZIZAO SPS-E3010 at £39.99 is 150 W, so 30 V and 10 A are not available together.
Do I need 10 A for phone repair?
A phone board does not ask you to set 10 A. A 10 A supply, such as the Jesverty SPS-3010V or the Wanptek 30 V 10 A, can still be the box on the bench because other jobs want the headroom. For the phone, set a limit the board can survive and use the main terminals. The OWON claim of phone repair is sales text. Products Compared did not verify it.
Can I power a 19 V laptop rail from the bench?
You can set about 19 V on a 30 V supply, with a current limit, on one lead. That is not a laptop repair, and nothing here shows that one succeeded. Many machines expect several rails and a handshake this supply will not provide. If it goes into current limit, stop rather than winding the knob up.
How low should the current limit be on a board?
Set a current the board can survive, from the module's rating when you have one. If you do not know it, start well below the maximum. Ten amps on a 10 A title is the instrument's ceiling, not a default for a small PCB. Set it with the output off. A CC lamp means the limit has been reached.
Can I wake a sleeping BMS with a bench supply?
A UK review of the Nankadf WPS3010H describes waking a LiFePO4 BMS. That is one owner's report, not a charge voltage to copy. These supplies do not run a lithium profile and do not stop at an end-of-charge point. If the pack is swollen, hot or unknown, leave it.
Should I power the board from the USB port?
Use USB only for a device that expects a charge socket. It is not the variable rail. On these listings the USB current is fixed or, on the OWON SPM6103, the port is for communication, so it ignores the limit on the main terminals. The centre post is mains earth, not a second negative.
