Weed burner buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a paving joint and three tools that share one name. One is a butane wand, one is a hose that needs a cylinder, and one is a mains stick that blows hot air. A weed burner buying guide has to split those machines before the temperature on the box means anything. The [weed burner comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-burner) lists twelve amazon.co.uk listings with prices in pounds. This page is the checklist: fuel, fitting, reach, and titles that lie. Prices are captures from 15 October 2026 for this set only. A qualifying Amazon purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. We did not run a lab test.

Three machines, one name

A butane wand is a light tube, often 78 to 80 cm, on a camping-style canister. The Marksman 68558C is about 80 cm at £10.99. The Onkruidbrander is 78 cm and 470 g at £14.95. Several pages print 1,300°C. That is a listing claim, not a temperature we measured. The flame is open, so wind and a dead piezo are why a pass stops halfway. A hose torch is a different object.

What the box actually contains

Under £15 you get the Sarini pistol at £8.99, 140 g and also sold for barbecues, the Marksman at £10.99 with canisters excluded, the Onkruidbrander at £14.95 with four cans, and a Green Haven wand at £14.99 that does not state a canister count. From £15 to £30 you get Dapetz at £19.79, a Green Haven four-canister listing at £19.99, Greenfields at £22.99, a Green Haven eight-canister listing at £26.99, My Garden at £28.34, and Thrink at £29.99. Above £30, Gloria is £33.80 and HoldOneLight is £47.24, and both still need a cylinder.

Regulator and plug

A screw-on cartridge is not a propane cylinder. Liquid Gas UK’s consumer guidance sheet 39, from August 2020, describes UK butane regulators as nominally 28–30 mbar and propane regulators as 37 mbar, with a left-hand thread on most screwed connections. It says not to force a regulator, and it notes that plumber torches often use higher-pressure adjustable regulators. That is a class of fitting, not proof that Gloria, Dapetz, or HoldOneLight takes one of them. None of those listings names POL, clip-on, or a millibar rating. Do not buy a 37 mbar barbecue regulator and assume it will seat. If the inlet is unstated, stay with a cartridge wand. Where wattage is printed it is 2,000 W, about 8.7 A at 230 V, under a 13 A BS 1363 fuse. Electrical Safety First says to unwind a cable reel fully and not to daisy-chain leads. My Garden’s 1.8 m cable draws reviews that call it too short without an extension able to carry about 2 kW. Thrink prints 2 m. Greenfields prints neither length nor watts. The Royal Horticultural Society still puts a knife, a brush, and a taproot tool ahead of heat on paths and patios. The gas or electric weed burner page is that fork. How you hold the heat sits on how to use a weed burner.

When heat is the wrong purchase

A listed 2,100°C is not a better patio tool than 650°C. HoldOneLight claims 2,100°C with one UK review. Electric sticks that state a temperature sit around 600–650°C. Those numbers are not one test, so a higher figure is not a ranking. What fails in the UK reviews is the clicker. Wind puts the Marksman flame out. Green Haven piezo units are described as dying after a day or a few uses, after which people reach for a lighter, a second flame in the hand.

Common questions

Gas wand, hose torch, or electric hot air?
Choose a butane wand when the drive has no socket and you will carry cans. Choose electric hot air when the weeds sit near a socket and you will not handle gas. Choose a hose torch only when you already own a cylinder, because Gloria at £33.80 and HoldOneLight at £47.24 do not include a tank. They are not three sizes of one product.
Are the canisters in the box?
The Onkruidbrander at £14.95 includes four. The Green Haven listings at £19.99 and £26.99 include four and eight, even though those titles say electric. The Marksman at £10.99 excludes cans. The £14.99 Green Haven title does not state a count. Gloria and HoldOneLight ship the hose without a tank.
Will any propane regulator fit?
No listing here names the thread or the millibar rating. Liquid Gas UK describes butane regulators around 28–30 mbar and propane around 37 mbar, and says not to force a fit. That is general practice, not a match for the Dapetz or Gloria hose. If the inlet is unstated, do not guess.
Does electric in the title mean a plug?
Not on the Green Haven pages that say electric and then describe butane. A UK plug is stated on My Garden and Thrink, both 2,000 W. Greenfields says mains hot air and does not state the plug. Read the fuel line before you assume a BS 1363 plug is in the box.
How far will a 1.8 m or 2 m cable reach?
My Garden prints 1.8 m and Thrink prints 2 m, enough for a patio beside the socket and little of a drive. Reviews say you need an extension that can carry about 2 kW. Electrical Safety First warns against a coiled reel under load and against daisy-chained leads. Greenfields does not print a length.
Is a listed 2,100°C better than 650°C?
Not as a buying rule. Electric pages here cluster around 600–650°C. Several butane wands print 1,300°C. HoldOneLight claims 2,100°C with a single review. UK complaints are about ignition and wind, not a shortage of degrees on the label.
What should I skip if I will not handle gas?
Skip every open flame: the wands, the Sarini pistol, and the hose torches. Stay with a mains stick only if a socket and a suitable lead reach the joints. My Garden and Thrink state 2,000 W and a UK plug, with short cables. No flame on a bullet still leaves a hot head, and a fire risk in dry weather.
