How to use a paver puller

Updated: October 2026

One loose block on a sand-bedded patio is the job these bars are sold for. How to use a paver puller starts at the joint: clear the sand and grit, then stop if the unit is glued or bedded in concrete. The [stone puller comparison](/hub/weed-control/stone-puller) lines up the amazon.co.uk pairs. This page is the lift and the refill. Firm slabs with only green growth are a different job, and a flag you have to carry is another class. The Products Compared editorial team used those listings, UK reviews, Pavingexpert, and Health and Safety Executive guidance in October 2026, with no lab lift. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check the joint before you buy leverage

The bar belongs in sand, or under a unit that is already loose. Tefola, OEBUAFI, and Smarbettiy say on their amazon.co.uk listings that adhesive or concrete defeats this puller. A mortar joint has to be cut out before any lever goes in. Clear grit until the tip meets the edge. Dry joint sand sometimes frees with a little water, a method paving repair notes use on the first block. Stop if the bed turns to slurry or the next unit moves with it. A bar that perches on the arris of a narrow block-paving joint is too thick for that crack. No kept listing states a minimum joint width. A US review of a Fukaisu pair called the bar too thick. If the paving is firm and the complaint is weeds, the stone puller buying guide is the decision, and the lift below is the wrong next step.

The lift

Choose a flat place for the unit, and keep your feet out of the line where it would fall. Work two bars at opposite ends and bring the block up and out with a jiggle. Pavingexpert describes that as levering opposite edges. The Tefola listing says to avoid prying both sides at once. A UK review of that brand says two screwdrivers did the job, and that the bars are straight. Push-fit plastic sleeves can leave the steel. That review describes both grips coming off and the slab dropping towards the toes. None of these pairs states a working-load limit. The Health and Safety Executive sets no single legal kilogram cap, records concrete kerbs over 70 kg, and flags repetitive handling of masonry above 20 kg. If the unit starts to drop, step clear and let it land on ground you have cleared. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 bind employers. A second person helps once you can no longer see your feet while you lower it.

The first block is the hard one

The first unit still has sand on every side, so it is the one that resists. After it is out, Pavingexpert's repair method brings the neighbours up from underneath, through the gap you have opened. The face of the next brick is a poor fulcrum. A UK OEBUAFI review reports marking where those faces took the lever. If the first block will not rise once the joint is clear, break one unit you can replace. Pavingexpert offers that so the lever stays off the run. A discontinued paver may leave you with no match. Set the first unit down before you remove the next block paver or lift the interlocking pavers beside it. An open joint loosens the pavement, so the gap wants sand the same day. When you relay a sunken patio slab, level the laying course by hand and keep a crushed bed out of any drive you still use.

Put the joint back

Flexible block paving is finished with kiln-dried jointing sand, brushed in and checked again after a few weeks. Pavingexpert's repair and maintenance notes use that sequence because an empty joint loosens the units and gives weeds a start. A mortar joint needs repointing that matches what you cut out. Kiln-dried sand in that gap washes out and leaves the edge unsupported. Seat the unit by hand once the sand is in. A plate compactor belongs to a larger relay, and a landscaper should run it beside a door, a drain, or a manhole if you do not already use one on drives. Discard disturbed laying-course sand on a proper reinstatement. That is the BS 7533-11 practice point, and a reseller notes that BS 7533-102:2025 has superseded the 2003 code. Call that landscaper for a vehicular drive, a concrete or full mortar bed, suspected Japanese knotweed, or a unit you cannot lower. If you wash afterwards, Marshalls' technical note is medium pressure, an oblique lance, at least 200 mm off the face, then fresh sand.

Common questions

Do I pry both sides at once?
Seat a bar at each opposite end and lift the unit up and out with a jiggle. Pavingexpert describes that opposite-edge method for the first unit. The Tefola listing says to avoid prying both sides at once, because that pry loads the grips and the joint together. If the block will not rise, stop.
What if the bar will not enter the joint?
Clear grit and loose sand first, and damp dry sand lightly if it is packed. If the tip still sits on the arris, the bar is too thick for that joint. No amazon.co.uk listing in this comparison states a minimum joint width. Adhesive or concrete, which Tefola, OEBUAFI, and Smarbettiy already exclude, will stay put.
What do I put back in the gap?
On flexible block paving, brush kiln-dried jointing sand into the joint and check it again after a few weeks. Pavingexpert uses that sequence because an empty joint lets neighbouring units loosen. A mortar joint needs repointing, and kiln-dried sand will not replace it. Disturbed laying-course sand on a proper reinstatement is discarded under BS 7533-11 practice.
Why did the next brick chip?
The lever was bearing on its face. A UK OEBUAFI review reports marking where brick faces were used that way. Once the first block is out, the next units come from the opened underside, which is how Pavingexpert removes neighbours. Another pull on the exposed arris takes the edge off. A discontinued paver makes that chip hard to hide with a matching block.
Why did the handles come off?
Many of these grips are push-fit plastic sleeves, and a sleeve can leave the bar under load. A UK Tefola review describes both grips coming off and the slab dropping towards the toes. None of the kept listings states a working-load limit, so treat the pair as a hand lever with a loose sleeve. Keep your feet out of the drop line and set the unit down as soon as it is free.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop if the unit is glued, mortared, or on concrete, if it starts to drop, or if you cannot lower it while you can see your feet. Call a landscaper for a sunken drive that takes vehicles, a concrete or full mortar bed, suspected Japanese knotweed, or levels at a doorway, drain, or manhole. One sand-bedded patio block is a household lift only while you can control it.
