How to choose a moss killer

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at an amazon.co.uk list where a 1 litre spray, a 15 kg lawn bag and a jerrycan of iron all use the word moss. How to choose a moss killer starts with the surface, then the weeds, then whether you will rake. This page does not rank the twelve listings. The [Moss killer comparison](/hub/weed-control/moss-killer) holds the prices and review counts. Shelf prices are the figures captured for that comparison. Dividing coverage into price is a rule of thumb from the square metres each listing prints. Products Compared editorial team, 16 October 2026. We compared those listings and did not run a lab test. Start with the surface

A UK moss killer is not one product. Lawn packs in this set are for grass. They use iron, sometimes with a feed and a selective weedkiller, and the moss blackens before you rake. Hard-surface sprays are for paths, patios, gravel or decking. Westland's Resolva page bars that spray from lawns, and from concrete and tarmac, because it kills green growth and runs off a surface that does not soak it up. Block paving, gravel and decking are the permeable group. Poured concrete and tarmac are not. That split is the moss killer for lawn or patio page. Iron from a lawn treatment stains paving. Marshalls' aftercare guide says keep ferrous sulphate off paving and brush a spill rather than wash it into the joint. A title that mentions lawns, as the 3 litre Topline Resolva listing does, does not override bullets that say the formula removes grasses. Shade and poor drainage bring moss back afterwards. The Royal Horticultural Society treats lawn moss control as temporary while those conditions stay.

Moss only, or weeds as well

Moss alone is not moss plus dandelion, clover and plantain, and neither is algae on a path. Miracle-Gro Complete 4-in-1 lists 80 square metres at £15, names dandelion, white clover and plantain, and includes a handheld spreader, for April to September. Miracle-Gro Mosskill, 1 litre at £12, claims moss and a feed for up to 67 square metres, and the bullets do not claim weeds. The Greenforce 15 kg and 3 kg bags claim feed, weed and moss without naming clover. If clover is what you see from the kitchen, "all major weed types" has not answered you. On a hard surface, Resolva removes green growth including grasses, so it is not a lawn weedkiller you can borrow. Path and Drive, 3 litres at £18, names pelargonic acid and claims weeds, moss and algae on paths, drives, patios and gravel. Do not read that as a kill to the root, and the listing gives no square-metre rate. Green Gone, 5 litres at £12.80, claims algae, mould and moss for up to 50 square metres, not lichen. A 4-in-1 granule is not a path cleaner. The best moss killer page matches a listing to one of those jobs.

Rake or no rake

Iron sulphate blackens moss. The black mat is the moss dying, not a ruined lawn, if you have not overdosed the grass. Miracle-Gro Autumn says moss blackens in seven days and you rake after two weeks, in September to November. If you will not rake, that pack is the wrong buy. Westland Moss Master says no raking and no black moss. The maker describes bacteria breaking the moss down. The amazon.co.uk line is 3.7 from 77 reviews, and several of the 14 texts say people still raked. That argument is the raking after moss killer page. Hard-surface sprays are a third case. Resolva reviewers sweep once growth is brown. Green Gone says leave it on, with a claim of up to nine months. Neither is a lawn scarifier.

Price per square metre in this set

A £4.49 bottle can cost more per square metre than a £30.50 bag, because they cover different ground. The Greenforce 15 kg at £30.50 lists 750 square metres, about 4p each, the lowest lawn rate here. The 3 kg at £15.25 lists 150 square metres, about 10p. Moss Master at £11.10 and the 80 square metre Miracle-Gro packs at £12.48 and £15 sit around 14p to 19p. Mosskill at £12 for up to 67 square metres is about 18p. Green Gone at £12.80 for up to 50 square metres is about 26p. Resolva is listed at 10 square metres a litre, so £4.49 is about 45p and £8.99 is about 90p. The 3 litre at £25.95 lands in that same high band. The ferrous jerrycan at £14.97 and Path and Drive at £18 have no coverage figure, so they stay out of the sum. Four pence of lawn granule on a patio is still the wrong chemistry, and it stains. The £4.49 Resolva also has a pack-count clash: the title says 1 litre and a spec field says three packs. Treat it as one litre at 10 square metres until the bottle says otherwise.

What the label must show

Home garden pesticides in the UK have to be authorised. The Health and Safety Executive says you read the label before you buy and again before you use it. A moss claim needs a plant-protection authorisation. The MAPP number is what you look for on the pack. Agrigem prints MAPP 17100 for Resolva ready-to-use 1 litre. That number is not in the Amazon raw files, so the product page is not a substitute for the bottle. The generic 5 litre of 20% ferrous sulphate shows no MAPP, no reviews and no coverage, and the title says pro grade. The weight cell says 1 kg for a 5 litre can. RHS says fertiliser-grade ferrous sulphate should not be used to kill lawn moss unless it sits inside an HSE-approved proprietary mosskiller. Skip it. Season sits on the label: Complete says April to September, Autumn says September to November, and Resolva's maker closes 18 September to 1 April, which the £4.49 bullets omit. Where a pet line is printed, Miracle-Gro granules say after watering in and drying, and Green Gone and the 3 litre Resolva say once dry. A blank pet field is a blank. If the only pack is labelled professional, or runoff would reach a drain and you cannot follow the label, stop.

Common questions

Should I choose a lawn or a patio moss killer first?
Choose the surface first. Lawn iron stays on grass. Resolva's maker bars that spray from lawns, concrete and tarmac, and limits it to block paving, gravel and decking. One bottle for both is how iron stains slabs and how a grass-killing spray browns the lawn. If you have both surfaces, you are buying two products and keeping them apart.
Do I need a weedkiller as well as a moss killer?
Only if the weeds are on the same surface. Miracle-Gro Complete names dandelion, white clover and plantain from April to September. Mosskill's bullets claim moss and feed, not weeds. Path and Drive claims weeds and moss on hard surfaces, with pelargonic acid named. A lawn 4-in-1 does not clean a patio, and a path spray is not a selective lawn weedkiller.
Will I have to rake after the treatment?
If the label says the moss blackens, plan a rake. Miracle-Gro Autumn says seven days to blacken and a rake after two weeks. Moss Master's bullets say no raking, and reviews of that box still include raking. Hard-surface products are swept, scraped or left, according to their own label, not put through a scarifier.
Is a cheap 1 litre bottle better value than a £30 bag?
Not per square metre. The £4.49 Resolva lists 10 square metres, about 45p each. The £30.50 Greenforce 15 kg lists 750 square metres, about 4p each. They are different jobs. Best value here means the lowest pence per listed square metre on the surface you have, not the smallest price on the button.
Is a pro-grade iron jerrycan an approved garden moss killer?
This listing does not show that. The 5 litre 20% ferrous sulphate has no MAPP number and no review line in the raw file. RHS says you should not use fertiliser-grade ferrous sulphate to kill lawn moss unless it is inside an HSE-approved proprietary mosskiller. A pro-grade title is a reason to check the label, not a reason to buy.
What if the lawn is mostly shade?
Moss comes back. RHS treats iron and raking as temporary while shade, compaction and poor drainage remain. A bigger bag does not fix a wet strip under a hedge. If the lawn needs drainage rather than another feed, that is a contractor's job, not a second spread in the same month.
