Hardy kiwi berry in the UK

Updated: October 2026

You searched for kiwi fruit and found smooth grape-sized berries that ripen whole, without the hairy coat of a supermarket kiwi. That is Actinidia arguta, the hardy kiwi berry, a different species from fuzzy Actinidia deliciosa. Choosing the wrong species wastes wall space and pollination years. This page explains fruit, hardiness and when to stay with fuzzy Jenny instead. Male and female rules sit on [self-fertile kiwi or a pair](/hub/trees-and-palms/kiwi-tree/sub/kiwi-tree-self-fertile-or-pair). Two fruits, two plants

Fuzzy deliciosa fruit is typically 3–5 cm, hairy, and peeled before eating. Arguta kiwi berries are about 2.5 cm on RHS guidance, smooth-skinned, eaten whole. You cannot pollinate a fuzzy female with an arguta male or the reverse. Gardeners' World describes Issai as a cocktail kiwi eaten whole. Treat that as magazine copy, not a lab test. If you expect a peeled slice the size of a shop kiwi, arguta will disappoint. The habit is still a climber. Hardier and slightly more compact does not remove wires, winter pruning, or indoor ripening when fruit is still hard before a frost.

Issai for one vine

Issai is the self-fertile arguta cultivar on the RHS database: H5, roughly 2.5–4 m, smooth fruit, no partner if the label is true. It fits a wall where a 6 m Jenny frame would be oppressive. Roots Plants and other nurseries sell Issai in 2 litre pots at mid-teens to mid-twenties pounds. None of the six kept amazon ASINs is a clean labelled Issai. Ken's Red is a red-fruited arguta female that needs a male such as Weiki. That pair is not a Hayward pair. The amazon listing whose body mentions Weiki and baby kiwis is pollinator language, not an Issai vine ready to crop alone.

Cold, pots and spring frost

H5 on an Issai profile means more dormant cold tolerance than H4 Jenny. It does not mean spring shoots survive a late frost without fleece. The RHS grow guide warns that shoots of both species scorch. Dormant hardiness and May weather are different checks. Roots Plants suggests at least 40–50 litres for Issai in a pot. That is retailer guidance, not an RHS volume. A 9 cm liner is years away from that container, and a rootball that freezes solid can kill even a hardy cultivar. Do not quote -25°C ratings from nursery blogs as RHS facts. Victoriana mentions extreme figures for Weiki. The profiles used here stay in the H4–H5 bands.

When to stay with a fuzzy kiwi

Stay with deliciosa if you want large hairy fruit and a warm wall for a bigger frame. Jenny is the only named self-fertile in this amazon batch, the top pick when one fuzzy vine is the job. Hayward plus a named male still wins on fruit size if you can host two vines. Skip arguta if you dislike small fruit or will not prune annually. Skip the Jumbo-titled Weiki listing unless you already own female arguta and need that pollinator. A baby kiwi phrase is not Issai in the box. The unnamed Carbeth pot is the best value review file at about £9.99, and it still does not name a berry.

Common questions

What is a kiwi berry?
A kiwi berry is smooth-skinned Actinidia arguta fruit about 2.5 cm on RHS guidance, eaten whole, on a climbing vine. It is a different species from fuzzy Actinidia deliciosa, the hairy supermarket fruit at about 3–5 cm that you peel. The vines both need wires. The pollen does not cross between them.
Do I peel a kiwi berry?
No. The skin is smooth, and you eat the whole berry when it is ripe, the way you would a large grape. Gardeners' World describes Issai as a cocktail kiwi eaten whole. That is a description of the fruit, not a sugar test. A shop kiwi you peel is the fuzzy species, not this one.
Is Issai enough on its own?
Yes on RHS records: Issai is a self-fertile arguta, so one true-to-name plant does not need a partner. You still need years before fruit, annual pruning, and fleece when frost hits new shoots. None of the six kept amazon listings is a clean labelled Issai. Buy it under that name from a supplier that prints it.
Is a kiwi berry hardier than Jenny?
Issai is H5 versus Jenny H4 on the RHS profiles for dormant wood. H5 is the harder dormant band, about -15 to -10°C, against Jenny’s about -10 to -5°C. That is not a trial of a particular winter. Spring shoots of both species still scorch, so the hardiness band does not retire the fleece.
Will the shoots still need fleece?
Yes when frost threatens new growth or blossom, whichever species you planted. The RHS grow guide says shoots of both fuzzy kiwi and the berry are burnt by late frost. Hold the fleece off the flowers rather than dumping it on them, and take it off once the risk has passed so the vine is not cooking under plastic.
Can I grow a kiwi berry in a pot?
Possible with a large container and careful watering. Roots Plants suggests at least 40–50 litres for Issai, which is retailer guidance, not an RHS volume. A 9 cm mail-order plant is not a finished pot specimen. A rootball that freezes solid in a pot can kill even a hardy cultivar. Do not leave it standing in water through winter.
What male do I need for Ken's Red?
An arguta male such as Weiki, not a fuzzy Tomuri or Atlas. Ken's Red is a red-fruited arguta female. The RHS pairs Weiki with Ken's Red and does not pair Weiki with Hayward. Victoriana’s up to seven females is that nursery’s claim, not an RHS ratio.
Which amazon listing is a kiwi berry?
None of the six kept ASINs is a clearly labelled Issai or Ken's Red. The listing whose body mentions Weiki and baby kiwis is pollinator copy, and the title says Jumbo, so you cannot treat the pot as a confirmed berry crop plant. Jenny is the named self-fertile fuzzy plant in the set, not a kiwi berry.
