How to plant a cherry tree in the UK, step by step

Updated: October 2026

A pot-grown cherry has arrived, the 5 litre pot is still the one it travelled in, and you need a sheltered spot in the ground before the compost dries out on the doorstep. How to plant a cherry tree in the UK is mostly site, season, and a prune you postpone until after the crop, rather than a winter tidy. The [cherry tree comparison](/hub/trees-and-palms/cherry-tree) is where the six listings are ranked. This page is the planting sequence for a live tree. Where a cherry will crop

Put a sweet cherry where it gets full sun and shelter from late frost. Blossom that opens into a cold snap sets poorly. Acid cherries tolerate more shade. Morello is the acid example on the RHS choosing page, and it is not in this Amazon set. Carbeth's Stella and Regina are sweet cherries, so treat them as sun-and-shelter trees even though the listings say full sun to partial shade. Clear grass and weeds for about a metre around the trunk. If you train a fan, the RHS grow guide puts the tree at least 25–35 cm off the wall. Cherries are usually grown as bushes, pyramids, or fans. The RHS says they are too vigorous for espaliers or cordons. None of the kept listings names a rootstock, so you cannot yet treat patio as a finished height. Choose the spot for a tree that may reach a few metres. Cultivar choice sits on the cherry tree buying guide.

When and how to put it in the ground

A container-grown cherry settles best from late autumn to spring, when the soil is workable. Skip a day when the ground is frozen, waterlogged, or too dry to water. Spring planting is what the Regina listing names, inside a window that also includes autumn. Dig a hole wider than the pot, set the tree at the same depth it was growing, and keep the graft union above the soil if you can see one. The Carbeth pages do not mark the union, so look for the swollen join before you backfill. Firm the soil, water it in, and stake a young tree. Keep mulch off the bark. If the parcel has broken branches, cut the damaged wood back to a sound bud on a dry day in the growing season, and do not reshape the whole tree in October. If the tree is staying in a container, the cherry tree in a pot page takes the final pot size.

The prune you postpone until after harvest

Cherries are pruned in summer, on a dry day, after you have picked, which is usually late July or August. The RHS silver-leaf page says the spores spread mainly in autumn and winter, so susceptible Prunus, including cherries, are pruned in summer. A winter tidy leaves a fresh wound in the spore season. The Carbeth Regina listing says prune in October. That is later than the RHS window. Follow the late-July-to-August dry day, and treat the October line as a conflict on the product page. The Stella listing's July-to-September line sits nearer the RHS dates. If a branch shows the brown stain of silver leaf in the wood, cut it out 10–15 cm beyond the stain, in dry summer weather, and clean the saw. The best cherry tree page is where Stella and Regina are assigned. Planting does not change which of them can crop alone.

The first season's realistic outcome

A tree planted this autumn or spring is establishing roots. It may blossom. It is not a reliable source of a bowl of cherries in year one. Water in dry spells through the first summer, and keep the metre of ground clear. If you want the fruit when it does appear, net the tree. Birds take cherries quickly. Cherry blackfly curls the young shoot tips. The RHS treats that as common, and the tree can still fruit. Several Carbeth reviews describe blackfly on arrival, so look at the leaves before you put the tree in the hole. Call a professional if the site is a party wall or a buried service, or a major limb is infected.

Common questions

When should I plant a cherry tree in the UK?
Plant a pot-grown cherry from late autumn to spring, whenever the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. A hot, dry week is a poor planting day even inside that season, because the rootball dries before the tree roots out.
Can I plant a pot-grown tree in summer?
You can, if you water it and the soil is not baked. They still settle best from late autumn to spring. If the forecast is a dry spell and you cannot water every few days, wait.
How far from a wall should a fan go?
Leave at least 25–35 cm between the trunk and the wall, which is the RHS figure so air can move behind a fan. Wires or canes should be up before you plant. Sweet cherries want the sunny side of that wall.
When do I prune, and why not in winter?
Prune after harvest on a dry day, usually late July or August. Silver-leaf spores spread mainly in autumn and winter, so a winter cut on cherry is the one to avoid. The Regina listing says October. Use the RHS summer window instead.
Will blackfly kill a new tree?
Cherry blackfly curls the shoot tips and is common. The RHS notes that trees usually still fruit. A tree that arrives with a dead stem is a different problem from curled tips.
How do I stop birds taking the fruit?
Net the tree if you want the crop. Do not expect a full crop in the planting year. Take the net off after harvest.
