Angle grinder speed for polishing

Updated: 22 October 2026

A flap disc at full speed will blue stainless, and a wire cup at that speed throws wire. The angle grinder speed for polishing is lower than the speed you want for a cutting disc, and it is still not a licence to fit a pad the grinder can outrun. This page stays on pads, mops and wire cups for the nine corded listings in the [angle grinder with speed control comparison](/hub/tools/angle-grinder-with-speed-control). Products Compared used published UK speed notes and the amazon.co.uk files read on 21 October 2026. The rpm bands below are those sources’ figures, not a lab test of these motors.

What the published speeds are for

A retailer guide updated on 24 September 2026 puts a polishing pad at about 2,000–4,000 rpm, and cutting discs at full speed. It says a low speed does not make an underspeed disc safe. Norton’s UK welding brochure puts a felt wool pad for mirror stainless at about 2,000–3,000 rpm, and shows a 125 mm pad whose own maximum in their table is 7,700 rpm. Flap refining in that brochure is around 6,000–7,000 rpm. Those are Norton’s suggestions for Norton products. One trade table marks a 125 mm crimped wire cup at 7,500 rpm maximum. None of those tables was written for these nine ASINs. The Bosch GWS 9-115 S manual puts paint removal toward the lower end of the thumbwheel. Both amazon files only say speed selection. They do not print that scale.

The pad must survive full speed

The number that decides whether the pad may be fitted is the grinder’s maximum, not the speed you intend to polish at. FEPA, and a DeWalt variable-speed manual, say the accessory must be rated at least as high as the maximum marked on the tool. Norton’s 7,700 rpm mark on a 125 mm felt pad is below the 12,000 rpm maximum printed on TEENO, both POSENPRO models, DEWINNER, LiunxDromic and TOPWAY. Turning the dial toward 3,000 rpm does not change that. Fit a pad whose own maximum is at least the tool’s maximum, or do not fit it. The same limit applies to a 7,500 rpm wire cup on a 12,000 rpm grinder. Fitting the guard and the nut is the how to use page. The guard stays on for a pad as well.

Who in this set even has a low floor

A useful dial for this job prints a floor you can compare with Norton’s 2,000–3,000 rpm suggestion. TEENO, DEWINNER and LiunxDromic print 2,000–12,000 rpm. Both POSENPRO models print 3,000–12,000 rpm, so the lowest step is already at the fast end of that wool-pad range, and the tool can still be turned up to 12,000. KATSU prints 11,000 rpm and no floor. Its bullet says lower speed means lower power and is not for heavy-duty work. TOPWAY prints six speeds and 12,000 rpm, with no floor. The two Bosch amazon files print no rpm numbers. None of the nine raw files says the motor holds rpm under load. DEWINNER and LiunxDromic bullets include a wool pad. TEENO’s pack line is cutting and grinding discs, not a mop.

A mop can cook a small motor

The shared POSENPRO review block, the same text on both ASINs, includes a motor that burnt out on polishing mops. That is one report inside a duplicated 4.2-from-160 file, not a lab endurance test. A wool pad loads the motor continuously. On a controller that sheds power as it sheds speed, the low step is the worst place to ask for a long polish. If you still use a pad, keep the passes short and stop at the smell of burning. Do not take the guard off to make the mop fit. Do not treat the wood blade in the DEWINNER or LiunxDromic bag as part of the polishing set. Do not read a six-speed budget dial as the Bosch manual’s thumbwheel. These amazon pages did not print that manual.

Common questions

What speed should a wool pad run at?
Norton’s UK brochure suggests about 2,000–3,000 rpm for a felt wool pad on mirror stainless. A retailer guide’s rule of thumb is about 2,000–4,000 rpm. Both are working speeds for a pad that is still legal at the grinder’s maximum. A 125 mm pad in Norton’s table is marked 7,700 rpm maximum, below the 12,000 rpm bullets in this set.
Can I polish on the KATSU’s low setting?
The listing says lower speed means lower power and is not for heavy-duty work. It prints 11,000 rpm and no floor, so you cannot check a 2,000 rpm suggestion against a stated low step. A mop that loads the motor for minutes is the job that bullet tells you not to do on the low setting.
Will a flap disc on stainless take full rpm?
Norton’s brochure puts flap refining around 6,000–7,000 rpm, not at a 12,000 rpm no-load maximum, because full speed colours stainless. The flap still needs its own maximum at or above the grinder’s maximum. Slowing the dial does not legalise a flap marked below the tool’s top speed.
My pad says 7,700 rpm and the grinder says 12,000. Can I turn the dial down?
No. The accessory has to be rated for the tool’s maximum, not for the step you mean to stay on. These listings do not claim the dial cannot be turned up. Fit a pad rated for at least that 12,000 rpm, or use a different machine.
Did a polishing mop kill a motor in this set?
One review in the shared POSENPRO block says the motor burnt out on polishing mops and was not for heavy or sustained work. That block sits on both POSENPRO ASINs, so it is one report, not two. It is a reason to keep mop work short and to stop if the motor smells of burning.
Do the kit listings include a wool pad?
DEWINNER and LiunxDromic bullets name a wool pad. POSENPRO’s components bullets do not, even though the shared review describes mop burnout. TEENO lists cutting and grinding discs. A named pad is still only usable if its own maximum meets the grinder’s maximum.
Is the Bosch manual’s thumbwheel the same as a six-speed budget dial?
No. The manual’s low position for paint and its top position for cutting are a guide for the GWS 9-115 S. Both amazon files only say speed selection. KATSU states that its low setting cuts power. Do not copy the manual’s numbers onto a 2,000–12,000 rpm bullet.
