125mm angle grinder buying guide

Updated: October 2026

The wattage numbers on a small grinder jump from 720 W to 1,200 W while the prices sit between about £24 and £125. A 125mm angle grinder buying guide only helps if it tells you which fact to settle first. A higher sticker does not fix a guard built for a smaller wheel or a plug that will not go into a UK socket. The [125 mm angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/angle-grinder-125mm) ranks the eleven tools we captured. Here you decide the guard, the plug and the switch before the brand. Prices are the captured amazon.co.uk figures. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. This is not a workshop test.

Start with the disc and the guard

A 125 mm grinder is a guard size as much as a motor size. The bore is usually 22.23 mm and the spindle is usually M14, so a 115 mm disc can bolt onto a 125 mm machine. That shared hardware is the trap. HSG17 treats the guard as the part that also stops an oversize wheel. Taking a guard off a smaller grinder to gain 10 mm is not a modification this page will describe. Buy the grinder whose guard was made for 125 mm. The TOPWAY 750 W at £23.99 and the TOPWAY 1,200 W at £29.99 print both sizes in the title while the bullets claim 125 mm. The size argument is on the 115 mm versus 125 mm comparison. Screwfix's table, a retailer rule of thumb, puts regular small-scale 125 mm work around 700–1,200 W. The Bosch GWS 7-125 at 720 W and 11,000 rpm sits inside that band.

Plug, voltage and where you will work

Domestic UK mains are 230 V. Electrical Safety First expects a UK three-pin BS 1363 plug, with the correct fuse, from a seller you can return to. A two-pin plug plus an adaptor is a return. On the Bosch GWS 7-125, only four of the first 50 captured reviews are marked United Kingdom, and two of those four say a two-pin plug arrived. The star line is still 4.7 from 22,017 ratings. Check the plug on the day. A 110 V site is a different machine. Hilti's UK guide separates 110 V from 230 V, and none of the corded tools here is sold as 110 V. The JCB 21-AG125 title says 18V while the specification says corded, 240 V and 840 W, at £43.98. Read the specification, or you will buy a mains tool while shopping for a battery one.

Speed dial, wattage and what the box adds

A fixed 11,000 rpm suits discs marked for at least that speed. A dial from about 2,000 to 12,000 rpm helps polishing and flap discs. It does not let you side-load a cutting disc or make a toothed blade legitimate. TEENO, both POSENPRO models, LiunxDromic, DEWINNER and the TOPWAY 1,200 W claim a dial. The GWS 7-125 does not. For a straight cut in steel, the missing dial is not a defect. The TOPWAY 1,200 W is £29.99 with 3.3 from five reviews, and one says the head left the housing. The TEENO at £32.99 is 4.2 from 143, and UK reviews describe a switch that will not turn the tool off. A switch that sticks on is worse than a 720 W motor. Restart protection on the GWS 7-125 stops a surprise restart after a power cut. It is not the same as a switch that stops the disc. Leave any wood saw blade in the bag. DEWINNER and LiunxDromic include one, and OPSS PSA5 says not to fit it. The TEENO's four discs are stated as metal only. Fitting and stopping are on the how to use a 125 mm angle grinder page. The Makita XAG25Z is a US-market X-LOCK bare tool with a voltage line of 120.

What this set shows at each price

Under £35 you get the two TOPWAY models, the TEENO at £32.99 (4.2 from 143) and both POSENPRO models at £33.99. Those POSENPRO star lines are one shared pool of 160 reviews, not 320. The middle is the JCB at £43.98, the LiunxDromic at a captured £44.64, and the DEWINNER at £48.99. The GWS 7-125 at £71.98 is the large rating count. The GWS 12-125 at £106.74 is eight reviews. On arrival, confirm the guard, a UK three-pin plug, and a switch that stops the motor.

Common questions

Is 750 W enough for a 125 mm grinder at home?
For short cuts in bar, sheet and light grinding, 750 W sits inside Screwfix's retailer band of about 700–1,200 W for regular small-scale 125 mm work. The TOPWAY 750 W in this set is that class, at 11,000 rpm, though the title also says 115 mm and UK reviews mention a side handle that snapped. It is enough for occasional home metalwork if the disc is marked for the speed. It is not a claim of all-day cutting in thick steel.
Why do some 1,200 W grinders cost under £35?
Because the wattage line is cheap to print and expensive to prove. In this capture the TOPWAY 1,200 W is £29.99 with five reviews, one of which says the head came away from the housing. A 1,200 W sticker on a tool at that price is not professional continuous duty. Read the switch comments before you treat the number as a specification you can work to.
Do I need a speed dial?
You need one if you polish or you want to run a flap disc more slowly than a fixed 11,000 or 12,000 rpm. You do not need one for ordinary cutting discs, which must still be marked at least as fast as the grinder's top speed. A dial does not authorise side pressure on a cutting disc. The GWS 7-125 has no dial and remains the top pick here for straight metalwork.
What plug should be in the box?
For a UK home, a three-pin BS 1363 plug on a 230 V tool. Electrical Safety First states that expectation. If a two-pin plug arrives, return it. Do not run the grinder through an adaptor. Site tools on 110 V are a separate purchase, not a plug change on a 230 V body.
Should a kit that includes a wood blade score extra?
No. OPSS PSA5 warns against toothed saw blades on angle grinders. The DEWINNER and LiunxDromic kits include one. Count the metal, diamond or flap discs if they match your job, and treat the wood blade as something you do not fit. A kit is not better value because the dangerous accessory was packed.
What should I check on the day it arrives?
Check the guard against a 125 mm disc, the plug, and whether the switch actually stops the motor before the disc is under load. Confirm the disc's rpm marking is at least the machine's. If the title said both 115 mm and 125 mm, do not guess.
