How to use an air tool set

Updated: 22 October 2026

The kit is already on the bench, the compressor is yours, and the first ten minutes are usually a hiss or a coupling that jumps off the hose. This is how to use an air tool set you have unpacked: air off, the same coupler profile at both ends, a pull test, then oil only if the tool is an air motor. Products Compared editorial team, 20 October 2026, from public UK guidance and the review texts captured with these listings. Not a workshop trial. Connect the hose with the air off

Shut the compressor off and bleed the hose before you change a plug. A quick release that looks seated can still be the wrong profile. PCL-style and Euro couplers often share a 1/4 inch BSP thread and do not seal in each other. NPT is a different thread again. The Hosemaster’s fitting guidance is the practical sequence: depressurise, use PTFE tape only on a tapered male thread, and treat a leaking quick release as an O-ring or a mixed profile rather than as a reason to add more tape. Draper 28357 reviewers still had leaks after thread tape, which is what a profile mismatch feels like. Seat the plug until it clicks, then pull the hose. Do not trust a click you have not pulled. Orazio and Novia six-piece reviewers describe couplings that pop off as soon as the air comes on, including an airline attachment that blew off and an O-ring pushed out of a gun coupling. If it will not stay on with the regulator barely open, stop. Forcing it is how a hose whips. Soapy water on the joint shows a leak you can hear but not see. The fitting you should have checked before purchase is on the buying guide. Here you only confirm the one in your hand.

Oil the motor tools, not the spray cup

A blow gun, a wash gun and a gravity cup do not want airline oil in the air stream. Oil in a spray gun becomes fisheyes in the paint, and oil in a wash gun ends up on the panel you were cleaning. The tools that need oil are the ones with an air motor: the Hilka impact wrench, and the impact wrench, ratchet, die grinder and air hammer in the Draper Storm Force and SIP cases. Which of those cases is a workshop kit, rather than a spray box, is the accessory kit versus workshop kit page. Hilka includes an oil pot and a mini oiler and does not state the grade. Clarke’s own impact-wrench manuals, for other Clarke models, describe compressor off, a few drops of airline oil in the inlet, then a leak check, and they name Clarke oil. That dose is an example from those manuals, not a measured dose for the Hilka. Chicago Pneumatic’s UK note separates two jobs: air-motor oil in the inlet, and grease in the impact mechanism. They are not the same fluid. If the Hilka parcel’s oil is unlabelled, do not guess with engine oil. Drain water from the compressor daily if you are using it. Moisture, not just a lack of oil, is what pits an air motor.

Use the blow gun at a pressure you can justify

Do not dust clothing or skin. HSE’s HSG39 records serious injuries from compressed air entering the body, including through ordinary work clothes. Eye protection stays on. If the blow gun has a safety nozzle that vents when it is blocked, you still keep it off your skin. If it has no safety nozzle, the British Compressed Air Society’s advice is to hold the supply to 2 bar, about 30 psi, for cleaning. Only the 7E components line in this batch names a safety nozzle. Do not assume the Einhell, Orazio, Clarke, Novia or Draper blow guns have one. That 2 bar figure is a safety cap for an unguarded nozzle. It is not the working pressure of your paint gun, and it is not Hilka’s 90 psi bullet. Tyre pressures in numbers live on the car tyres page. Each listing keeps its own number: Einhell states 8 bar as a kit maximum, the Novia six-piece blow gun states 6.2 bar, Orazio and 7E state 150 psi. Where the listing is silent, do not invent a bar figure and do not copy a wrench pressure onto a spray gun. Two-pack isocyanate is the hard stop: HSE’s motor-vehicle guidance wants a booth and air-fed breathing apparatus. A kit gun does not meet that.

Stop when the hose has already failed

A pinhole, a split next to the fitting, or a coupling that has already blown off is the end of that hose, not a repair with tape. Einhell reviewers describe a nylon hose that split after about a dozen uses. Novia six-piece texts include a hose that broke on the second use. Stanley reviews in the shared file describe a hose that burst and emptied the tank. Tape on a split coil keeps the split as a weak point, and a burst under pressure is the whip HSG39 is concerned with. Switch the compressor off, bleed the line, and replace the hose. You do not have to nurse a dead gauge or a missing spray gun either. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality, normally within 30 days of delivery. A gauge face smashed in the box, a paint gun absent from a parcel that was supposed to include one, or a case that arrives crushed are reasons to reject. A householder with a blow gun does not, by that fact, need a written scheme of examination. HSE’s INDG178 puts that duty on the receiver when the product of pressure and volume reaches 250 bar litres. If the coupling has whipped once, stop using the set until the hose and the plug match.

Common questions

How do you connect an air tool set without a leak?
Turn the compressor off and bleed the hose. Fit a plug of the same profile as the coupler, not merely the same 1/4 inch label. Click it home and pull. Open the regulator slowly. Brush soapy water on the joint if you can hear a hiss. PTFE tape belongs on tapered male threads, not as a cure for a Euro plug in a PCL coupler. If it still leaks, the parts do not match.
What do you do if the coupling blows off?
Switch off and bleed before you pick the hose up. A coupling that has blown off is the failure Orazio and Novia reviewers describe, and it can whip. Do not reconnect it and lean on the regulator. Check that the profile matches and that the O-ring is still in the coupler. If the hose has split at the fitting, replace the hose rather than taping it.
Should you oil a spray gun the same way as an impact wrench?
No. A few drops of airline oil in the inlet are for an air motor such as an impact wrench, a ratchet, a die grinder or an air hammer. A spray gun, a wash gun and a blow gun should stay dry of that oil, or the oil contaminates the paint or the panel. Hilka includes an oil pot and does not name the grade. Do not substitute engine oil because the bottle is unlabelled.
How do you use a blow gun without injuring yourself?
Keep it off skin and clothing, wear eye protection, and do not block the nozzle with a hand. HSE records injuries from air forced into the body. If the gun has no safety nozzle, BCAS advice is to hold cleaning pressure to 2 bar, about 30 psi. Only the 7E listing in this set names a safety nozzle. Assume the others do not.
What pressure should a kit gun stay under if it has no safety nozzle?
For blowing, 2 bar if there is no safety nozzle. That is a cleaning limit from BCAS, not the maximum printed on a paint gun or an impact wrench. Einhell’s kit line is 8 bar, Hilka’s bullet is 90 psi, and several listings print nothing. Use the number on your own tool, and stay at 2 bar when the gun is only a bare nozzle.
Why does the compressor keep restarting with the kit attached?
A leak is feeding the tank back to atmosphere. Reviewers describe leaks at barbed fittings, at the hose joint, and at an inflator that will not seal on the valve. Soapy water finds it. A coil that only leaks a bit can empty a portable tank overnight, which is a 7E review complaint. Fix or reject the leaking part. Do not keep topping the compressor up.
When do you stop and reject a split hose?
When the hose has split, burst, or blown a coupling off, and when a gauge or a gun arrives broken or missing. The short-term right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is normally 30 days. Tape is not a repair for a coil that has already failed under pressure. If the job has become isocyanate paint, or the compressor receiver needs a written scheme, that is a professional’s work rather than a longer evening with the kit.
