Tool chest or carry case for a garage?

Updated: 17 October 2026

Choosing a tool chest or carry case for a garage is a choice between parking the tools and carrying them. A 163 cm drawer combination can organise a fixed work bay, while a 12.4 kg case can travel to the car but gives you no rollcab drawers. Retail searches mix both because each arrives filled with tools. Compare prices and specifications on the [tool chest with tools comparison](/hub/tool-accessories/tool-chest-with-tools). Two objects, one search

A rollcab is a lower drawer cabinet on castors. A top chest sits on a bench or a compatible lower unit. A combination joins the two. A carry case holds tools in moulded layers and is designed to leave the room. It does not offer the same drawer access. Record the floor and the height, then allow room for the lid and every drawer. Check the doors, any narrow turn and the step. A cabinet that fits the bay can still fail a hallway. If repairs stay in one bay, drawers put groups within reach. If the tools live in a boot, a case trades storage for movement. The buying guide checks the named tools after this decision.

Park it: the 16-drawer combination

Sealey AP35TBCOMBO is the parked option. Its stored dimensions are 33 × 68 × 163 cm, including the handle, and it weighs 96.4 kg. The 5+3+8 arrangement is a 16-drawer stack with a 398-piece tray set. Two locking castors, ball-bearing slides and a key lock suit tools that return to one station. At 163 cm the top may conflict with shelving or an up-and-over door, and you still need clearance for the lid. At 96.4 kg it is not a solo lift. The HSE’s roughly 25 kg filter is for a straightforward lift in favourable conditions, not a legal limit. Put it on a level floor, engage the brakes and keep dense tools low. The researched Amazon rating was 5.0 from one review. The filled chest picks put that thin sample in context.

Carry it: the aluminium case

Stanley STMT98109-1 is the clearest carry-case alternative. It weighs 12.4 kg, uses a folding handle and stores the kit in four layers. Reviews include an owner who keeps it in a car boot. Named metric sizes make the coverage easier to check. A 12.4 kg case can be manageable on the flat and unpleasant up stairs. The listing does not state castors. You need space to open the layers, and the moulded positions must hold the tools when the case is vertical. Reviews also mention rust and a lid hinge that would not close. Choose Stanley if the route is realistic at 12.4 kg. It has no equivalent drawer capacity to Sealey.

The two listings that are neither

Amazing Tour uses castors and a pull handle, so it sits between a hand-carried case and workshop furniture. The listing gives 12.5 kg in one place and 14.6 kg in the bullets, and the piece count clashes between 810 and 718. Small wheels do not make it a rollcab. Sundpey is the light option at 4.94 kg. Reviews report that tools fall from the moulded slots, and 134 of the 281 pieces are screws. If the garage is a cupboard in a flat, use the first home tool kit instead.

Common questions

When is a rollcab the right object?
A rollcab suits tools that stay mainly in one garage or workshop, especially when you want grouped drawers and have level floor space. Measure the cabinet, the open-drawer clearance and the delivery route first. It is a poor match when you routinely take the same tools to another vehicle, property or floor.
When is a carry case enough?
A case is enough when the named tools cover your actual tasks and movement matters more than drawer access. Check its loaded weight, handle, latches and internal retention. It is particularly useful for a boot or a short garage-to-drive carry, and less appealing if you need a growing fixed inventory.
Will a 163 cm stack fit beneath a shelf or garage door?
Only your measurements can answer that. Sealey lists 1,630 mm including the handle, but you must also allow clearance for the lid and any nearby door mechanism. Measure at the intended bay and along the route. Do not infer clearance from the garage’s advertised external dimensions.
Can one person move the Sealey combination?
At 96.4 kg, it should not be treated as a one-person lift. Plan suitable assistance or moving equipment, and account for steps, thresholds and its tall shape. The HSE’s approximate 25 kg filter is not a legal limit, and it does not justify solo-handling this assembled stack.
Is 12.4 kg comfortable to carry to a car?
It depends on distance, grip, stairs and the person carrying it. Many adults can move 12.4 kg briefly, but Stanley reviews also describe the case as heavy. Test an equivalent load over the real route and do not treat a carry case as effortless portability.
Does a trolley box replace a rollcab?
Not necessarily. A trolley box can reduce carrying on smooth ground, but it generally lacks the drawer access, stable footprint and expansion space of a rollcab. Check wheel size, handle and the exact inventory, and whether you must still lift it into a boot. Wheels do not remove that final lift.
