How to assemble a tool cabinet safely

Updated: October 2026

Your tool cabinet has arrived, the carton is open and the description on amazon.co.uk does not quite match the parts on the floor. Learning how to assemble a tool cabinet begins with identifying which build you actually received: a completed drawer chest needing wheels, a flat-packed cupboard or a nominally assembled unit with loose castors. Do not load tools until the cabinet is square, the brakes and lock work and every fixing is accounted for. The [tool cabinet comparison](/hub/tool-accessories/tool-cabinet) records the stated assembly type for each model, but the manual and parts in your carton take priority. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three builds need three different approaches

A largely built drawer chest needs the least work. DURHAND listings say assembly is required, while UK reviews usually describe fitting the four wheels and the side handle. Keep the drawers secured while the chest is tilted. The two SUPEER cabinets, both HOMSTEEL cupboards and the LARBANKE door cabinet are flat-packed. Lay the panels out from that model’s manual and leave the bolts loose until the shell is square. Do not copy a bolt position from another brand. A listing that says no assembly can still include loose parts. The red GiantexUK says no assembly, and the black version of the same model says assembly is required. The LARBANKE seven-drawer and Draper 19572 also say no, although reviews mention fitting castors. Compare the carton with the manual before you decide a piece is missing. If you are still choosing a type, use the tool cabinet buying guide.

Fit wheels, brakes and handle on a level floor

Follow the wheel positions in your own manual. Some UK instructions put braked swivel castors at the handle end and rigid castors opposite. If the brackets differ, use the labelled positions. Empty the cabinet and lower it onto its back or side only if the manual allows that. Start every wheel bolt by hand, tighten evenly, and lift the cabinet upright with help. Do not use an open drawer as a lifting point. Roll it empty. Each wheel should turn, the cabinet should not rock and the brakes should engage before you open a drawer. A brake does not level a slope or create anti-tilt. On adjustable feet, level the empty shell before you align the doors. A twisted shell can make a sound lock appear faulty.

Stop if the lock or fixings are missing

Count keys, bolts, hinge pins and castors before you throw the carton away. UK reviews mention missing keys on the DURHAND seven-drawer, missing bolts on HOMSTEEL and SUPEER, and incomplete hinge pins on the LARBANKE door model. If a structural fixing is missing, stop and photograph the panel, the empty hole and the manual step. Ask the seller for the exact part or a return. Do not fit a similar bolt at a wheel bracket, and do not drill new holes. Test the lock while the cabinet is empty. Some lid-locking chests catch only after the drawers are in and the lid is closed. If the key turns and the drawers stay free, do not store valuable tools and do not bend the locking bar.

Load the bottom before opening drawers

Put the heaviest suitable tools in the lowest compartment and stay within the clearest stated limit. Do not merge the DURHAND 15 kg drawer lines with the 150 kg field, or the conflicting HOMSTEEL shelf figures. The largest number is not permission. Open one loaded drawer at a time unless anti-tilt is documented. The LARBANKE seven-drawer states it. The DURHAND chests do not, and reviews describe tipping with two drawers open. Never use an open drawer as a step. If the unit rocks, unload it first. Depth and door swing are covered in the small-garage tool cabinet guide.

Common questions

Do you build the whole cabinet or only fit the wheels?
It depends on the model. The DURHAND drawer chests generally arrive with drawers built and need wheels and a handle, according to listings and reviews. SUPEER, HOMSTEEL and the LARBANKE door cabinet are knock-down builds. Check the model-specific manual and parts list rather than following a generic video.
Which wheels should have the brakes?
Use the locations specified in your cabinet’s manual. Some UK roller-cabinet instructions place braked swivel castors at the handle end and rigid castors opposite, but not every cabinet uses that layout. Fit each labelled bracket in its stated position, then test steering and all brakes while the cabinet is empty.
What should you do if keys or bolts are missing?
Stop before loading or modifying the cabinet. Photograph the carton, parts, label and relevant manual step, then contact the seller for the exact component or a return. Do not substitute an unknown wheel bolt or force a lock, because the wrong part can compromise the structure and your consumer remedy.
Where should heavy tools go?
Put suitable heavy tools in the lowest drawer or on the lowest shelf, within the manufacturer’s stated limit. Bottom-first loading lowers the centre of gravity. Spread the weight rather than concentrating it at the front, set castor brakes and avoid opening more than one loaded drawer unless an anti-tilt system is specified.
Can you open two drawers at once?
Assume one loaded drawer at a time unless the manufacturer explicitly says an anti-tilt mechanism prevents unsafe opening. Anti-tilt is stated on the LARBANKE seven-drawer but not on the DURHAND chests. Reviews reporting a tip with multiple drawers open show why a wheel brake is not an alternative.
What if the listing says no assembly but parts are loose?
Treat the carton and model manual as the immediate evidence. Some listings use no assembly for a cabinet whose body is built but whose castors still need fitting. Preserve the packaging, identify every part and ask the seller if the delivered state conflicts with the instructions rather than guessing at the installation.
