Socket set buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in front of two cases: one promises 46 pieces, the other 108, yet neither number tells you whether the socket you need is inside. This socket set buying guide puts the decisions in a more useful order: choose the drive for your jobs, check the actual socket sizes, then compare the ratchet, bits and case. The [socket set comparison](/hub/tool-accessories/socket-set) covers the current amazon.co.uk listings. A compact 1/4-inch set can be excellent for furniture and a bicycle and still be unsuitable for a 19 mm wheel nut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the drive has to match

The drive is the square between the ratchet and the socket, not the hex opening that fits the nut. A 1/4-inch drive stays compact for furniture, appliances, bicycles and light fittings. In this batch, several 1/4-inch sets stop at about 12–14 mm, which leaves larger automotive fasteners out. A 3/8-inch drive adds leverage without a large handle. A 1/2-inch drive is the usual direction for larger, tighter fasteners, but the square alone does not cover every task. If wheel nuts are on your list, read the guide to a socket set for car repairs. ISO 1174-1 covers these hand-tool squares. Among this batch, only the Bahco SL25 explicitly states ISO 1174 and DIN 3120.

Sizes that actually get used

The square can be right while the socket opening is wrong. Read the size list rather than the total on the lid, and look for an unbroken run around the fasteners you expect. Gaps around 16/17 mm or 18/19 mm can matter more than another dozen screwdriver bits. Furniture and a bicycle may need only small metric sockets. A sump plug can sit beyond a compact 1/4-inch case. Do not force a near metric socket onto an inch fastener; see metric or imperial socket sets. Check named deep sizes rather than a line that only says deep sockets are included.

Ratchet, bits and case

Where a listing specifies 72 teeth, one engagement step is 5 degrees of rotation. The WORKPRO 108-piece, 39-piece and mini sets make that claim. Do not assume it when the listing omits the tooth count. Check the direction switch, the socket detent and the quick-release button as well. A straight extension often beats a pile of uncommon bits, because it reaches a recessed fastener while the socket stays square. Bits suit a first household kit. They add less if you already own screwdrivers, and they inflate the piece count. Each socket should stay in its marked position when the case is carried.

What the money buys on amazon.co.uk

Prices move. This batch broadly separates into compact sets around £12–£17, mixed kits around £20–£60 and larger cases around £70–£112. The lowest band is usually a narrow 1/4-inch tool. The highest band pays for breadth and a heavier case, and it can still omit a useful intermediate size. Chrome vanadium names an alloy family, not a torque test. ISO 3315 includes hardness and torque testing for hand-operated socket tools. Award that only when the listing states it. Ordinary shiny hand sockets are not for an impact wrench. The best socket set shortlist applies these trade-offs to selected listings. We compared amazon.co.uk details and stored reviews, not a laboratory test.

Common questions

Is 1/4 inch enough for the house?
It can be enough for flat-pack furniture, bicycles and many small household jobs when the metric run covers every size you use. It is a poor single-drive answer for larger automotive fasteners. If the task list crosses both groups, consider a mixed-drive set.
When do I need 1/2 inch?
A 1/2-inch drive suits larger sockets and higher hand leverage, including substantial brackets and some vehicle work, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions. It does not make an ordinary socket safe for an impact wrench, and it does not help if the case omits the opening you need.
Does a higher piece count include awkward sizes?
Not necessarily. Piece counts often include bits, hex keys, extensions and adaptors, so a larger total can still hide a gap such as 18 mm or stop before the size you need. Read the itemised socket range and check both standard and deep sockets rather than comparing totals alone.
What does a 72-tooth ratchet change?
Seventy-two teeth give a 5-degree engagement step, so the handle can work in a tighter arc. That helps where surrounding parts limit movement. It does not prove greater strength, and it only counts when the listing specifies 72 teeth.
Is chrome vanadium a quality grade?
No. It describes the broad alloy used for a tool, not the quality of its heat treatment, dimensions, finish or ratchet mechanism. A named product standard, a credible warranty and consistent user evidence provide more useful context, although none replaces checking whether the tool is appropriate for the job.
Should the case include bits?
Choose bits when they replace a separate tool you would otherwise carry. For a first household kit, common screwdriver and hex bits can be convenient. For an established toolbox, they may merely increase the advertised count. Prioritise the socket sizes, ratchet and case retention before accessory variety.
How do I know it is not for an impact wrench?
Assume a conventional chrome hand-socket set is for a ratchet or a hand bar unless the manufacturer rates the sockets for impact use. Do not infer impact suitability from a 1/2-inch drive, a dark colour or a high piece count.
