How to set up a wireless pool thermometer

Updated: October 2026

You are at the kitchen table with the box open, the pool already full, and a float that has not touched the water. How to set up a wireless pool thermometer means fitting the power the listing includes, pairing at arm’s length, and tying the cord so the float cannot reach the skimmer. If it never links on the table, you stop, rather than spending a week on the same buttons. The [wireless pool thermometer comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/wireless-pool-thermometer) holds the twelve amazon.co.uk listings behind these steps, extracted on 15 October 2026. Products Compared did not lab-test them. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Written by the Products Compared editorial team, updated in October 2026.

Fit the power the box actually includes

Read the included-components line before you assume cells are in the tray. A local indoor monitor, such as Aottom, ORIA, Longzhuo or the Inkbird IBS-P01R, takes batteries in the base and in the float. An Inkbird gateway is different: the IBS-M2 has no internal battery, so it needs USB power from a socket before the float can join it. ORIA’s listing does not put batteries in the box. Warmfay lists five AAA cells, and you still should not assume the base station is named on that same line. A gateway goes dark when the USB lead is out, and UK reviews of the IBS-M2 say a power cut can drop the setup you have just saved. If the line is silent on cells, buy the size printed in the bay and fit the base first, then the float. A new socket in a wet plant room is not part of this job. If the only USB point sits where you would not leave a phone charger, ask an electrician. The pair only counts once that power is on.

Pair at arm’s length, then move the monitor

Pair on the table, with the float beside the monitor or the gateway, and only then carry it to the pool. For a local set, a useful order from a UK floating-thermometer sheet is base batteries first, then the float, a transmit press while the channel flashes, and the battery door shut before water. That sheet is a different product, so copy the order and leave its printed range alone. Do not treat the transmit press as universal. Aottom and Yallmie are not given that sequence here. On Inkbird gateway sets, plug the IBS-M2 into USB, put the phone on 2.4 GHz only, then fit the float batteries close to the gateway. If adding fails, take those batteries out and repeat on the table. One UK review of an IBS-P02R spent about an hour without a pair, which is long enough to treat as a fault. Then read it again from the kitchen. A wall can drop a signal that worked at arm’s length. A kitchen screen is not a phone app: that split is on the Wi-Fi pool thermometer versus indoor monitor page.

Tether it where it cannot reach the skimmer

Once the kitchen reading holds, tie the cord before you let the float drift. Fix it to the pool edge, a ladder rail or a coping eye so the body stays in open water and cannot be pulled into the skimmer. A float in the throat reads the weir, not the water you swim in. Leave a little slack for the waterline to rise a few centimetres. Too much slack lets a return jet walk the float into the basket. Close the cap while your hands are dry, before this step. Aottom’s wording is to tighten the cap. Inkbird’s IBS-P02R manual is more specific: dry the bay, dry your hands, and tighten the lid, because moisture is what fogs the window later. This cord is for an open pool. A hot-tub cover is a different radio problem, so placement under a lid belongs on the wireless thermometer for a hot tub page.

When to dry it, and when to reject it

A wet battery bay and a float that never pairs are different jobs. Only the first is worth a second try the same afternoon. If you already had a reading and the window fogs after you open the door, dry the bay, dry your hands and tighten the lid. That recovery is in the IBS-P02R manual. Do it once. A new cell that does not restore an Inkbird IBS-P01R matches UK reviews in which another transmit press is not enough. An IBS-M2 that drops its setup after a power cut has no internal battery, so you repeat the pair only if it worked the first time. If it never links on the table, stop after one close repeat. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives 30 days to reject faulty goods. That is not a same-afternoon refund, and it is not legal advice. If the next box needs a different link, use the wireless pool thermometer buying guide before you reorder.

Common questions

Which batteries go in first?
Fit the base, or the gateway USB supply, before the float, and shut the door before the pool. ORIA does not include batteries, so buy the size marked in the bay. An Inkbird IBS-M2 has no gateway battery, so the lead comes first.
How close should the float be for the first pair?
Keep the float within arm’s length, on the table, before it touches the water. The later walk to the kitchen is the range check. A pass on the table does not promise a signal through brick.
Why will the gateway not join the Wi-Fi?
On Inkbird gateway sets the phone needs 2.4 GHz, and the IBS-M2 must be on USB power because it has no battery. A 5 GHz-only network name will look like a dead gateway. A local Aottom display never joins Wi-Fi, so that fault does not apply to it.
Where do I tie the cord?
Tie the cord to the pool edge, a ladder rail or a fixed eye so the float cannot reach the skimmer. Leave only a few centimetres of slack. Fasten the battery door first. A hot-tub cover is a different placement problem, not a longer cord.
What if the screen fogs after I open the battery door?
If a float that already worked goes misty, dry the bay, dry your hands and tighten the lid, as the IBS-P02R manual says. Do it once the same day. If the window stays opaque, reject it.
What if a new battery does not restore the link?
UK reviews of the Inkbird IBS-P01R include sets that will not reconnect after a battery change. Dry the bay first, in case the cells went in wet. A float that stays silent beside a powered receiver is the one you stop using.
When should I stop and send it back?
Stop after one close-pair repeat if the float has never linked beside the powered monitor or gateway. An hour without a pair, as one IBS-P02R review described, is past a setup mistake. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject faulty goods. That is not a same-day refund promise, and it is not legal advice.
