How to fit a pond liner

Updated: October 2026

Your sheet has arrived and the hole is open. The failure mode on amazon.co.uk is predictable: the dig matches the packet size, or someone trims the film before water has pulled it into the shape. This guide is the order of work for a flat pond sheet in the UK, using the kept listings in our [pool liner comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-liner). Thickness choice stays on the [pond liner buying guide](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-liner/sub/pool-liner-buying-guide). Wildlife slopes and child safety are a separate decision from how the sheet is seated.

Add twice the depth before you trust the packet

Write two numbers from the hole: maximum length and maximum width at the rim, and maximum depth. Liner length needs the length plus twice the depth; width needs the width plus twice the depth, before you allow extra cloth at the bank. Newcastle's wildlife-pond leaflet and Islington's pond PDF use that sum; it is stricter than a rule of thumb that merely doubles the floor size. Example: a pond 2.0 m by 1.2 m and 0.5 m deep needs about 3.0 m by 2.2 m of sheet before edge overlap. A 2 m square from the cheap listings cannot cover it. PondKraft's 4 m by 3 m sheet can, provided you still add flap for tucking or GARDENIX's stated 50 cm overlap class. If the largest rectangle in the set is too small after arithmetic, stop and order a larger roll from a pond dealer rather than stretching 0.1 mm film. Unpack early. Tezhiie reviews mention folds stuck together so the usable area shrank; measure the delivered sheet before the hole is final.

Stones out, underlay down

Strip sharp stones and roots, firm the shelves, and lay geotextile underlay sold by gsm, not newspaper or sand alone. World of Water treats sand as a leveller, not puncture protection. GARDENIX tells you to use underlay; the box is only the liner. YWKJDDM may appear under underlay browse ranks but the listing is a 0.2 mm HDPE sheet, another membrane, not fleece. Drape the liner loose without pulling it like a drum skin. Butyl installers warn against stretching rubber; polyethylene film tears more easily if you fight folds. Wear soft shoes or work from the edge if you must step in.

Fill, then trim

GARDENIX's fitting bullet is explicit: do not cut until the liner is full of water and has been pulled down into the shape. The RHS suggests leaving roughly 15 cm overlap to tuck under the edge; Butek's install note mentions keeping water at least 0.15 m below the top of the liner if you worry about wicking through the bank. Those are different margins from GARDENIX's 50 cm overlap language. State the source and do not merge them into one number. Fill slowly and ease creases as the level rises. A hose on a trickle gives you time to lift folds from the shelves; a heavy stream can pull 0.1 mm film before it has settled. Hide the edge with turf, stone, or board once the waterline is stable, then trim excess with a sharp knife on the outside of the flap, not on the bare soil under tension. If children can reach the hole while it fills, treat that as a supervision problem; a liner is not a safety cover. RoSPA's pond-safety page lists grille, fence, or filling in for young children, separate from how neatly the sheet folds.

A swimming-pool vinyl fit is a different afternoon

Overlap vinyl for an above-ground pool hangs over the wall and is held with coping, sized to diameter and wall height, installed warm, dry, and not windy, with a cove so the liner is not pinched under the foot. Dolphin Leisure's 16 thou overlap liners start around £233.70 for a 12 ft pool in their UK listing. None of the amazon.co.uk sheets in this comparison includes bead, J-hook, or wall-height sizing. If your pool already has vinyl hanging outside the top rail, you are not following this pond-sheet sequence. Read pond liner vs swimming pool liner and buy from a pool shop. Call a professional for inground vinyl with steps, a hopper, or fittings still under water, or when your arithmetic exceeds the largest kept rectangle.

Common questions

How big a sheet do I need for a pond 2 m by 1.2 m and 0.5 m deep?
About 3.0 m by 2.2 m before bank overlap. A 2 m square fails that sum.
Do I cut the liner before or after filling?
After filling and seating, per GARDENIX and standard RHS practice. Cutting dry film to the dug outline is the common mistake.
What goes under the sheet?
Geotextile underlay on a cleared base. Sand alone or newspaper is not the substitute described on specialist pond guides.
Can I walk on the liner in shoes?
Soft shoes or edge work only. Punctures on 0.1 mm film often trace to gravel and foot pressure.
Should I fill with rainwater or the hose?
Rainwater is preferred on wildlife guidance; tap water may need standing or dechlorination before plants and animals go in.
How much liner should stick out at the bank?
Plan an overlap class: RHS mentions about 15 cm to tuck; GARDENIX mentions at least 50 cm in its bullet. Do not mix them into one figure without measuring your edge detail.
When is this no longer a pond-sheet job?
When the pool has a wall system needing overlap, bead, or J-hook vinyl sized to height and diameter.
What if the sheet arrives stuck to itself?
Measure the usable area before you finish the hole. Report a short delivery if folds welded the sheet smaller than the title size.
