Removable pool ladder steps are not a fence

Updated: October 2026

The children are in the garden, the pool is uncovered, and the ladder you fitted yesterday is still against the wall while you go inside. Removable pool ladder steps only change that if you remove them, or lock the flight the listing actually describes, every time the pool is empty. They are not a fence. The [pool ladder comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-ladder) shows which of the eight listings state a feature. How the outer flight goes on is [how to fit a pool ladder](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-ladder/sub/pool-ladder-how-to-fit). Choosing the height first is the [buying guide](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-ladder/sub/pool-ladder-buying-guide).

What the listings actually say

Three listings state something you can point at on the 15 October 2026 captures. Intex B004DCANOO, the 36–42 in ladder at £74.99, says removable step in the title and in a bullet. UK reviews on that file describe one side sliding up. Intex 28074, up to 52 in at £104, also says removable step. Its stored reviews are the same text as the shorter Intex, so the slide-up comment is not a separate test of the 52 in model. Bestway 58331, for pools up to 122 cm at £113.67, is the only row that says it prevents unattended entry. The amazon.co.uk capture does not say whether that is a fold, a flip, or a flight you lift off. ManoMano UK says the outside steps can be folded up, and that this model is not for salt water. Outside Play says flip and lock upwards. When you quote Amazon, stay with “prevents unattended entry”. Bestway 58430 does not say removable steps in the bullets. Bestway 58330 says the ladder is easy to remove for cleaning, and the capture does not say flip lock. Eastnmythet, VEVOR, and DeTmrcy do not state a removable flight. If the box for 58331 has no way to disable the outer side, the bullet and the product disagree, and that is a return rather than a modification.

What you do with the outer flight

The Intex owner’s manual for items 28076 and 28077 puts the removable side outside, tells you to remove the front steps when the pool is not occupied, and tells you to store those steps where children cannot climb them. It also says one person, 136 kg, adults assemble, do not dive from the ladder, and do not swim under it. Those item numbers are not B004DCANOO or B004DCANOY. Use the actions as the pattern. Do not say your ASIN was the model in that PDF, and do not copy the line that those items comply with EN 16582. The listings here do not print it. Outside means the garden side, not a second flight in the water. Off means the steps are detached or locked, not folded in a way a child can kick down. Stored away from children means they are not on the grass by the liner. A pools.shop page for a 91–107 cm Intex ladder describes loosening quick-release fasteners and lifting the outdoor unit. Check that your clasps match before you copy those moves. You do this when you leave the pool, including for lunch. A lock set on Saturday does nothing on Sunday if the flight is back in place. Bestway 58330’s “easy to remove for cleaning” is a different habit: the whole ladder comes off. That helps only if you remove it. If the clips on Bestway 58430 pop out when you move it, which is what UK reviews describe, you do not have a reliable lock. You have a ladder that sheds steps. Fix or return that before you talk about child access.

What a ladder does not replace

RoSPA’s drowning-prevention advice is to fence the pool with a childproof barrier and a self-locking gate, and to supervise children. RoSPA does not review Bestway or Intex ladders. A removable flight is not that barrier. Children climb whatever is left standing, including a ladder you meant to lift off. Supervision is while they are near the water, not a glance from the kitchen once the steps are up. The 1.1 m fence height in RoSPA’s material sits with the pond guidance. Do not move it onto the pool and call it the ladder rule. The ladder fails open the moment you leave the flight in place. HSG179 is operator guidance for leisure pools, not a design code for a garden pool. Neither BS EN 16582-3 nor BS EN 13451-2 is printed on these eight listings. ManoMano says 58331 is not for salt water. The amazon.co.uk capture does not.

When a ladder is the wrong tool

A removable step does nothing for someone who cannot climb rungs. A hoist or a proper entry for an inground pool is a different piece of kit, and it is a job for someone who fits that access. None of the A-frames here is a hoist. DeTmrcy’s deck ladder is not a substitute. Its only UK review says the steps do not reach the floor. If the pool is inground, stop looking for an above-ground A-frame with a lock. Bolting a stainless ladder to a deck, or cutting a liner to force a fit, is how a garden product becomes a leak. If a child can still reach the water with the outer flight removed, because the wall is low enough to climb or a chair is beside the cover, the ladder was never the barrier. Move the chair. Fit the fence RoSPA describes. Stay outside with them. The ladder is the way you want people to get in when you are there, and the way you want closed when you are not. A flight that will not detach is not as described. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the route GOV.UK explains, not a weekend of extra holes in the frame.

Common questions

Which ladders in this set say the steps come off or lock?
Intex B004DCANOO and Intex 28074 state a removable step. Bestway 58331 states that it prevents unattended entry, without naming the mechanism on Amazon. Bestway 58430 only has a child-lock mention in reviews. The other four listings do not state the feature. The two Intex review files are one shared text, so do not count the slide-up comment twice.
Does Bestway 58331 say how the lock works?
Not on the amazon.co.uk capture. The bullet says it prevents unattended entry. ManoMano describes outside steps that fold up. Outside Play describes a flip and lock. Cite those as retailer pages. Do not invent one mechanism and attribute it to Amazon.
Is a child lock on the £23.99 ladder a specification?
No. Bestway 58430’s bullets do not say the outer steps lock or come off. UK reviewers mention a child lock. Buy it for an 84 cm wall and a stated load of 150 kg, not for a lock the listing never prints.
Can I leave the removed steps on the grass?
No. The Intex manual for items 28076 and 28077 says to store the front steps away from children when the pool is not occupied. Those item numbers are not these ASINs. A flight on the grass beside the wall is still a climbing frame. Put it where it cannot be used.
Does this replace a fence?
No. RoSPA says fence the pool with a childproof barrier and a self-locking gate, and supervise children. A ladder you can lock helps only while it stays locked or removed. It does not prevent drowning. The 1.1 m figure in RoSPA’s pond section stays with ponds.
