How to set up an Intex pool

Updated: October 2026

The box is on the patio, the hose is already uncoiled, and the only flat patch you can see is a slight slope toward the fence. How to set up an Intex pool starts by not turning the tap on. Level, firm ground decides whether the wall stands. The Products Compared editorial team used the Intex Easy Set manual, Intex’s no-diving sheet, and the listing notes in our [Intex pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/intex-pool). We did not assemble a frame in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Chlorine doses sit on the [water care](/hub/swimming-pools/intex-pool/sub/intex-pool-water-care) page. This page is the sequence, and the point where you empty it instead.

Ground before water

Spread the pool only where the ground is flat, firm, and free of stones. The Easy Set manual forbids a slope, a deck, a balcony, a platform, mud, sand, and soft soil. A ground cloth protects the liner from what is underneath. It does not level a fall toward the path. One litre of water weighs about one kilogram. The rectangular 28272NP, about 3,834 litres at 90 percent, is about 3.8 tonnes before anyone gets in. If you cannot find a patch that passes, stop. A smaller same-day pool from the buying guide may fit. A frame you force onto a slope will not be saved by more water.

Ring pool and frame pool

An Easy Set goes down as a liner, then the top ring is inflated, then you fill. Intex’s estimate for that assembly is about 10 to 30 minutes. In hot sun you may need to let air out of the ring. UK reviews of the 6 ft pool also mention real leaks at seams. A metal frame is poles, joints, and a liner you seat on the rails. Listings in this set say ready for water in 30 or 45 minutes. That clock is assembly. The 8 ft 28205NP table says assembly is not required, which conflicts with reviews that describe building it. Ignore that “no” and follow the frame instructions. One review of the 10 ft frame says the liner would not meet the rails. You do not inflate a steel wall, and you do not click poles onto an Easy Set.

Plugs, sun, and drain

If there is no pump, fit the blanking plugs in the filter outlets before the water goes in. The Easy Set manual says to do that from the inside on pools that have those outlets. If the plugs are missing, do not fill and hope. The rectangle includes a connection and says the pump is separate. Electrical Safety First says outdoor equipment wants a 30 mA RCD. The Intex manual says not to use an extension cord, a plug adaptor, or a converter. A 120 V pump is the wrong object even with the right-looking lead. Sun on a filled ring can over-pressure the collar. Release a little air when the ring is drum-tight. On the rectangular frame, reviews say the outlet sits above the liner floor, so a few centimetres remain unless you lift the liner toward the hole.

When to stop

Stop if the ground is not level once a few centimetres are in and the water is clearly deeper on one side. More water will not square a frame that is already twisting. Stop if the liner will not reach the top rail. Stop if a seam is running or the ring will not hold air after you have allowed for heat. Stop the electrical work if the only supply is an extension reel across wet grass. You do not convert a US plug to make a 120 V pump run. “Ready in 30 minutes” never included the fill. Plugs in first, then water. Setup does not end when the hose stops. It ends when someone is actually watching.

Common questions

Can I set an Intex pool up on a slope or on decking?
No. The Easy Set manual wants flat, compacted ground and names decks, balconies, and platforms as places not to use. A slope shows up as soon as the water is deep enough to see, and the deep side loads the wall. Decking is the wrong structure for a fill measured in tonnes. If the garden only offers those surfaces, do not fill this pool there.
Do I need a ground cloth?
Use one. It keeps stones off the liner. It does not fix a slope, soft soil, or sand, which the manual already rules out. The cloth goes down before the liner, on ground you would stand a heavy water butt on.
What do I do with the filter holes if there is no pump?
Fit the blanking plugs from the inside before you fill, on any pool in this set that has filter outlets. The 6 ft reviews include cases where those stoppers were not in the box. If you cannot close the holes, do not fill. A pump bought later is when the plugs come out, not a reason to leave the outlets open this afternoon.
Why does the top ring go soft or over-tight in the sun?
Heat raises pressure in the collar, and the manual says you may need to release some air. A cooler evening can make a correctly filled ring feel softer. Check temperature before you call it a puncture. If it still will not hold air once the weather is stable, UK reviews of the 6 ft Easy Set do describe seam leaks, and that is a stop.
The liner will not reach the frame. Should I keep filling?
No. A review of the 10 ft metal frame 28200EP describes a liner that would not meet the frame. More water is not a fitting method. Empty it and check that the rails are seated and the liner is not twisted under a joint. If it still will not meet, the pool is not ready to use.
