Rectangular cantilever parasol buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are on a UK patio or a balcony with a tape measure, and the amazon.co.uk titles all say rectangular cantilever parasol while describing different canopies. One is a compact offset for a door. Others print a 330 cm diameter on cloth that later reviews call a square nearer 2.2 m. This page is the order of checks: a plan size you can verify, a pole that is actually offset, and ballast that is either in the box or named in kilograms. The [rectangular cantilever parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/rectangular-cantilever-parasol) holds the six listings. Know which class you are buying before you treat a diameter as a measured plan.

What you are actually buying

A rectangular cantilever parasol is a freestanding umbrella with the pole to one side and a square or longer rectangular canopy over the seats. UK shops also say offset, overhanging, or free-arm parasol. The word rectangular on its own does not give you that arm. A centre-pole rectangle is a different product. A square is a rectangle with equal sides. A longer dining canopy is a different plan. The square or rectangular cantilever parasol page stays on that geometry. In this set the compact offset is the Grand patio balcony cantilever, 182 cm by 131 cm. The tillvex titles print a diameter of 330 cm, and reviews describe a square nearer 2.2 m to 2.3 m. Write the length and width where people sit, including how far they lean back.

Size the canopy to the seats

Field & Hawken say the canopy should reach at least 50 cm past the seating. Furniture in Fashion uses about 50–60 cm past the table edge and points a rectangular table toward a cantilever. Harbour Lifestyle uses about 0.6–1 m. Those shop rules disagree, so pick one and measure. A six-seat top of about 2 m, plus lean-back, is a different job from a balcony door. A canopy of 182 cm by 131 cm covers that door or a small bistro set and leaves the ends of a six-seat run in the sun. The about £59.98 listing is that balcony canopy. A diameter on a square title can be a side, a diagonal, or a wish.

The base is a separate decision

The metal cross is a frame for slabs or a sleeve for a fillable foot. The kilograms are the slabs, the sand, or the water. Nova Outdoor Living tell owners of Nova parasols to use the specified base on firm ground and to close a cantilever in wind, when they leave it, and overnight. The only printed minimum here is on the Grand patio balcony cantilever: a 25 kg base, not provided. That figure belongs to the small balcony listing. Plia's table says about 80–100 kg for a 3 m cantilever. JB Furniture often cites 90–100 kg. When the instructions exist, they win. Where a title only says stand, you still have no kilogram. On 21 October 2026 the files show about £59.98 without a base, about £86.79 for one tillvex square title, and about £107.79 for the other tillvex URLs. The cantilever parasol base weight page sets those shop figures side by side.

What the listing must state

After size, pole, and base, read the frame and the cloth. Powder-coated aluminium or steel, a rib count, and a crank you can turn without forcing it are the useful lines. None of the kept listings prints a Beaufort class, so you still close the canopy when it lifts. Tilt, a 360° lock, a dry-storage cover, and solar LED come after those checks. Lights do not add stability. A cover helps only if it arrives, and only on dry cloth. A UPF bullet is seller wording. GOV.UK says only clothing at UPF 40 or above takes the solar-UV-protective label under BS EN 13758. A parasol sits outside that label. Check that the details-block ASIN matches the page, because several tillvex files print a different ASIN. If the carton is already in the hall, the how to put up a cantilever parasol page is the order of work.

Common questions

What does rectangular mean if the title also says square?
A square is a rectangle with four equal sides, so both words can be true at once. A longer rectangle has one side clearly longer, which is what a dining table usually needs. If the same title says rectangular, square, and a single diameter, you still lack a plan size. Look for length and width, or measure the cloth when it arrives.
Is the base in the box?
It is in the box only when that listing says so. The Grand patio balcony cantilever says a 25 kg minimum base is recommended and is not provided. Some tillvex titles say with stand and still print no kilogram, and reviews mention slabs bought afterwards.
Centre pole or cantilever for a rectangular table?
Choose a cantilever when you want the pole out of the table. A centre pole is simpler to ballast, and it occupies the middle of a rectangular top. The cantilever earns the heavier base only when the arm is actually offset. The phrase rectangular garden parasol in a title is not that proof.
Is UPF 50+ on the bullet a British clothing label?
GOV.UK reserves the solar-UV-protective clothing label for garments at UPF 40 or above, under BS EN 13758. A parasol bullet sits outside that label, and the files here contain no cloth test report. Shade helps at lunch. It leaves sunscreen as a separate habit on a clear afternoon.
Do I need planning permission for a freestanding parasol?
A folding parasol sits outside the Planning Portal's Class E rules for outbuildings. Those rules concern fixed garden buildings, and a fixed gazebo can fall into that class. You can put up a freestanding cantilever, close it, and store it without that building path.
