How to put up a half parasol against a wall

Updated: 22.10.2026

The carton is on the patio and you want the shade up before lunch. How to put up a half parasol is mostly orientation. The straight edge goes to the wall, the crank turns only as the leaflet says, and the cloth comes down when you go in. The [Half parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/half-parasol) is where the four listings were chosen. This page assumes you already have a canopy and a base the pole fits. No manual for Angel Living, Pure Garden, Garden Friend, or EASYmaxx was in the files, so the sheet in the box outranks any direction below. We did not assemble these four.

Put the straight edge to the wall

Lay the base first. A half-round base has a flat edge and a curved front. The flat edge goes against the wall, so the pole stands at the back of the shade. A round base may hold the pole and still leave a gap. The straight hem faces the wall and the curve faces the garden. Check the hem while the cloth is closed. A Pure Garden review describes two-piece assembly. The lower tube drops into the base. Seat the joint before the canopy goes on. If it will not lock, stop. Do not tape it. Pure Garden's lines disagree on whether a base is included. Garden Friend's pole is 38 mm and Pure Garden's is 1.5 in. Angel Living and EASYmaxx do not print a diameter.

Open the crank slowly

Open only after the pole is seated and the straight edge faces the wall. If the crank grinds or sheds plastic, stop. A UK review of the Pure Garden describes rattling plastic and a damaged inner handle cover. Forcing it can bend a rib. Christow says clockwise to open on their 2.7 m model. That arrow is not printed on these four. Follow the sheet you were sent. Do not use a tilt joint to shorten the pole. Angel Living's UK reviews say the height could not be altered. If the closed canopy already meets a soffit, opening it will not create headroom. That check belongs on the half parasol buying guide, before you are under the beam.

Close it when you leave

A half parasol is shade while you sit there. Brollies and Parasols tells customers to close a parasol when it is not in use, including overnight, above 25 km/h, and to store it inside above 35 km/h. They also say not to force the ribs, not to modify the frame, and to keep it off flames. That is their sheet, not a rating of these four. A vent does not replace closing. Angel Living includes a cover and says the cloth is not fully waterproof. Cover it only when it is dry. If the base rocks with the cloth closed, weight is on the half parasol base and wind page. Do not leave the canopy half open.

When to stop and talk to the seller

If plastic from the crank is already in the box, do not assemble around it. If the canopy sinks by itself, that is not a settle. A Garden Friend review says it lowers itself and that the buyer is sending it back. Do not cut the pole because a fence or soffit is too low. Angel Living's reviews include a fixed height above a neighbouring fence. Cutting the mast modifies the frame, which the trader sheet tells you not to do. Photograph carton damage and use the retailer. An EASYmaxx review mentions arrival damage and a pictured foot that disappointed. Do not drill the mast or bend a rib back. If the shade has to be bolted to the wall, stop. That is no longer a parasol in a base.

Common questions

Which edge goes against the wall?
The straight edge of the canopy, and the flat edge of a half-round base. The curve faces the garden. Reversed, the pole sits where the shade should have been empty. Check the hem before the cloth is fully open.
Which way do I turn the crank?
The way your leaflet shows. Christow prints clockwise to open for their model only. That direction is not in the Angel Living, Pure Garden, Garden Friend, or EASYmaxx files. If the crank sheds plastic, stop.
The pole is in two pieces. Which end is up?
The lower tube is the one that fits the base. Seat the joint fully. If it will not lock, stop. Tape is not a substitute for the collar in the box.
Plastic fell out of the crank. Do I carry on?
No. A Pure Garden review describes a damaged handle cover and rattling plastic. Forcing it can bend a rib. Photograph the part and talk to the seller.
The canopy sinks on its own. Is that normal?
No. A Garden Friend review says the canopy lowers itself and is going back. Close it and contact the retailer. Do not tie the crank as a permanent fix.
Can I cut the pole if it is too tall?
No. A fixed height in the Angel Living reviews, including one above a fence, is a fit problem, not a sawing job. Cutting modifies the frame. Choose a shorter parasol if this one meets the soffit while closed.
Do I close it overnight, and can it stay out in a shower?
Close it when you leave, including overnight, and above 25 km/h on the Brollies and Parasols sheet. Angel Living says close it in rain and wind. Dry the cloth before the cover goes on. A shower is not a reason to leave it open.
