Cassette awning buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are replacing a parasol that will not stay put beside the bi-fold doors, and you need a width you can order before you compare cards. This cassette awning buying guide treats the cassette as the measurement, the cloth as a smaller strip inside it, and a missing size line as a reason to stop. The nine amazon.co.uk listings in our [cassette awning comparison](/hub/sun-shades/cassette-awning) are the shelf we use. We checked these listings against public UK guides. No lab test.

What you are measuring

Awnings Online defines ordering width as the cassette, or as the end-to-end mechanism when there is no full cassette. The cloth sits inside it. Their example puts the cloth about 70 mm narrower on each side. Caribbean Blinds measures outside-to-outside and puts the cloth about 170–220 mm narrower overall. Eastern Awnings suggests about 0.5 m past the opening on each side for doors. The figures differ, so you measure the cassette and ask which gap the listing used. On a 3.5 m cassette, a 170–220 mm gap leaves the cloth nearer 3.3 m. Ordering the door width can miss the frame. Projection is separate. Awnings Online treats about 2.5 m as room for a small table and 3 m or more as a larger set. Green Bay B09TQN1RH4 prints 3.5 x 2.5 m, and the listing does not label 2.5 m as projection.

Wall, housing and a class for that size

A correct width still fails on a weak wall. Awnings Online wants several solid brick courses above and below the brackets, and special brackets on single-storey extensions, bungalows, render and timber. Mortar will not hold the bolts. Pitch on their measuring page is about 14 degrees or steeper so rain runs off. The decision here is sound brick or concrete, or a fitter. A full cassette encloses cloth and arms when it is closed. A semi-cassette covers the cloth and often leaves the arms partly visible. This set does not document a semi-cassette. The case protects retracted cloth. EN 13561 is a wind class for a stated size. UK guides do not share one km/h cap, so you ask for the class on the sheet for the width you are buying. A GS or TUV line on the Green Bay page is not that class.

What the prices in this set can and cannot tell you

Shelf prices only help when a size is printed. About £500 to £601 is where the size line is missing or implausible: Dalumian B0FB7SJ7YT at £500.17 prints 1 x 0.5 m and 50 g; B0H6GRG24T at £525.99 has no width; B0FC2FCGK9 and B0FC2FNP68 at £600.99 leave width unstated. About £906 to £1,104 holds B0H6GBZV56 at £905.99 (1.5 m projection, no width), the Green Bay at £1,099.99 (3.5 x 2.5 m, 56 kg) and B0HBQ6ZFKL at £1,103.99 (3 x 2.5 m title). The WKIEQACO manuals are £1,499.43 and £1,690.13, both at 2.5 kg beside 350 x 250 cm. A cheaper page is a saving only after a patio width and a credible weight. Five listings leave width blank. A Primrose 4.0 m electric from about £1,069.99 is not an ASIN here.

Questions to ask before you buy

Before you pay, get five answers in writing: cassette width and cloth width; projection, labelled as projection; the EN 13561 class for that size; item weight and whether the wall kit is for brick or concrete; and the drive, whether electric, manual, or only a remote. On B0HBQ6ZFKL the title names a remote and the listing does not contain the words electric and motor. Planning is local. Flats do not get the householder permitted-development rights that some houses in England use. Waltham Forest says a new awning generally needs an application. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run separate rules. A 2.5 kg or 50 g weight beside a patio-sized title is a stop.

Read the size line before the price

When the listing names cassette width, a labelled projection and a credible weight, use those figures. When the weight is 2.5 kg or 50 g, or the width is blank, the lower price has not become the better buy.

Common questions

Is the width I order the cloth width?
The ordering width is the cassette, outside to outside. Awnings Online's example puts the cloth about 70 mm narrower on each side. Caribbean Blinds puts it about 170–220 mm narrower overall. Ask which gap the maker uses. Order the bare door width and the cloth can finish short of the frame.
How far should a cassette awning project for a table?
Awnings Online uses about 2.5 m of projection for a small table and 3 m or more for a larger set. That is their guide, not a measurement from these nine listings. The Green Bay line is 3.5 x 2.5 m, and 2.5 m is not labelled as projection.
Does a full cassette mean it can stay open in wind?
The housing covers the retracted cloth and, on a full cassette, the arms. It does not set the wind class while the awning is open. EN 13561 is a class for a stated size, and UK guides disagree on the km/h bands. A GS or TUV line is a claim on the page, not that class.
When is a 2.5 kg or 50 g weight a reason to stop?
Stop when that weight sits beside a size you are treating as a patio cassette. Both WKIEQACO titles print 2.5 kg next to 350 x 250 cm. Dalumian prints 50 g next to 1 x 0.5 m. The credible patio weight in this set is the Green Bay at 56 kg. Wait until the seller confirms the cassette.
What should I budget on amazon.co.uk in this set?
About £500–£601 sits on missing or implausible sizes. About £906–£1,104 includes the Green Bay at £1,099.99. The manuals are £1,499.43 and £1,690.13 with a printed weight of 2.5 kg. A lower figure with no width is a description risk.
