How to fit a cassette awning

Updated: 22.10.2026

A 5 m cassette arrives as a long, heavy box, and the first windy night pulls on whatever you bolted it to. How to fit a cassette awning is a masonry job with enough people to lift it, a level bracket line, and a stop where the motor needs an electrician. The [5 m x 3 m cassette awning comparison](/hub/sun-shades/5m-x-3m-cassette-awning) shows which listings even name a wall kit. The bolt sizes are from specialist sheets, not a claim that every ASIN uses the same fixings. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you drill

Look at the wall before the drill. Primrose's full-cassette sheet says drill the brick or the concrete, not the mortar. A bed joint feels easier and holds less. The top of a single-storey extension, a timber frame, and external insulation are different structures. If you cannot say what the bolt will bite, stop. The wall and the headroom should already be measured, using the 5 m x 3 m awning buying guide. Only two extracts name hardware: Anthracite 2 (B0HGH9BG21) says a wall-mount kit, and Anthracite 3 (B0HGHKS43G) says mounting hardware. Anthracite 4, Anthracite 6, the charcoal electric and the £1,409.99 Generic do not. If the box has no fixings, the job pauses until you have anchors for the wall you have. Where a weight is printed, the MBDRKVGF rows are about 40.1-41 kg. Primrose puts cassettes from 3.5 m to 6.0 m on more than three people, with scaffold. An overhead load on a ladder is the wrong method. If you cannot field the crew and a safe platform, book a fitter before any hole exists.

The bracket line

Mark a level line before any hole. A cassette high at one end winds the cloth off square. Use a laser or a long level. 247 Blinds use about 450 mm above a door as their own minimum, so the cassette stays clear of the swing. That is their kit, not a figure on these amazon.co.uk pages. If the brick above the lintel is only a short course, the door wins. Do not bury the cassette in the opening. Primrose's sheet specifies a 14 mm bit and a hole about 90-100 mm into brick or concrete. Those are their fixings for their full cassette. A semi-cassette with a torque bar can place brackets in more positions when a downpipe sits where an end bracket wanted to be. None of the six listings states a bracket count. If the instructions never arrive, do not invent a 14 mm hole from this article.

Hanging the cassette and setting the pitch

The cassette goes up once the brackets are set, and once any resin the sheet demands has cured. Take the weight from a platform, not from a ladder. Do not leave a half-out cloth in a gust while you fetch a spanner. Both ends have to match. One bracket a finger high and the front bar droops, and the cloth tracks off the roller. A 5 m section shows a twist you cannot see from the patio. Set the pitch so water leaves. The published figure is about 14 degrees, from the British Blind and Shutter Association and from Samson. Birkdale's manual says 15 degrees for limited rain. You want a fall to the front bar, not a flat sheet. If the front bar crosses a door, the brackets were too low. Do not flatten the cloth to save the door.

Power, then the first bad weather

The five MBDRKVGF listings are electric and none states a voltage. UK mains are 230 V. A motor fixed outside is fixed electrical work. Approved Document P points it at BS 7671. A new circuit is notifiable. Outdoor power wants a registered electrician and RCD protection, not a lead through a window. The crank closes the cloth in a power cut. It does not wire the motor. Blinds2Go's sheet says retract in wind, heavy rain or snow, because the load reaches the wall as well as the cloth. Run it fully out and fully in on a calm day. If the front bar bounces while you are still looking at it, it comes in. None of the six states a wind class or a sensor. Leave the cloth dry before a long roll-up. The job is finished when the brackets are in masonry, the bar is level, the pitch sheds water, and the motor is on a proper circuit.

Common questions

Can one person fit a 5 m cassette awning?
No. Specialist sheets want two or three people, and Primrose wants more than three plus scaffold once the cassette is in the 3.5-6.0 m band. A listed weight around 40 kg is an overhead load. One person on a ladder is how the box, or the person, comes down.
Can the bolts go into mortar?
Primrose's sheet says no: the hole goes into brick or concrete, about 90-100 mm deep with their 14 mm bit. Mortar is the easier drill and the weaker hold. Those dimensions are theirs. Your listing may specify different anchors. What does not change is the instruction to avoid the joint.
Which of these listings include a wall kit?
Anthracite 2 states a wall-mount kit. Anthracite 3 states mounting hardware. The other three MBDRKVGF electrics and the Generic manual do not name fixings on the extracts read on 19 October 2026. Hardware on one colour is not hardware on another. If the box has no anchors, you stop and match fixings to the wall.
When does the motor need an electrician?
When the motor is a fixed outdoor connection, which is what these electric cassettes are. A new circuit is notifiable under Part P, to BS 7671, by a registered electrician. None of the electric listings states a voltage. The crank, 165 cm on four of them, closes the awning if the power fails. It does not replace the circuit.
What if the wall is a single-storey extension?
The top of a single-storey wall is a common weak edge, and external insulation hides what the bolt would bite. Do not drill it because the patio door is the sunny one. A structural check, or a fitter who will warrant that wall, comes before the cassette. Scaffold and a larger crew do not strengthen a poor substrate.
