Rocking sun lounger buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

A rocking sun lounger on a British patio is a lounge seat on a curved base. You shift your weight and the chair rocks. That is a different purchase from a lockable zero-gravity chair, and from an Adirondack rocker you sit upright in. This rocking sun lounger buying guide puts the decision in the order that stops the usual mismatches: the motion, then the store, then the stated load, then the material you will live with through a wet winter. Prices, star lines and the seven amazon.co.uk listings sit on the [rocking lounger comparison](/hub/sun-loungers/rocking-lounger). Which? starts rocking chairs from about £80. This batch also has mesh rockers nearer £44 to £48. Those lower prices do not change the first question.

Rocking base or a lock

A curved rocker moves for as long as you shift. A zero-gravity chair tips you backwards and holds a legs-up angle. Which? treats the NASA origin of that posture as alleged, so weightless is a marketing word, not a mechanism. If the chair keeps moving when you lean, you have a rocker. If it holds still with your legs up, you have a gravity chair. A few amazon.co.uk titles print both names on one product. Read the base and the lock, not the extra words in the title. In this batch the grey Outsunny and the RELAX4LIFE are curved full-length rockers. The Yaheetech folds and rocks, and the listing does not give a degree range. The beige Outsunny is the hybrid. Its back is stated from 10 to 35 degrees and it can still rock, or you can drop the feet and sit still. That lock is the safety part. UK reviews of that beige chair include a lever that released and a tip. The full split is on rocking lounger vs zero gravity chair.

Folded size and length

Which? notes that rocking chairs are often heavy and not typically foldable, which is why the fold field has to be read on each listing. The grey Outsunny is not foldable. Both Grand patio colours are not foldable. The beige Outsunny folds to 104 x 70 x 19 cm and weighs 12.5 kg. The Yaheetech folds to 116 x 65.5 x 15.5 cm and weighs 7.22 kg. Both folders are still longer than a metre when they are flat. A 15 cm thickness does not make a 116 cm length fit a shallow cupboard. Expert Reviews makes the same point with a VonHaus orb that squeezed for storage and still needed a long space because it did not fold completely flat. B&Q’s current orb page states a folded size of 150 x 106 x 30 cm. The word foldable is not a measurement. The grey Outsunny stays full length, printed both as 157 x 60 x 84 cm and as 61 x 160 x 79 cm. Those two strings do not match, so you measure the chair that arrives if the doorway is tight. Footprint and carrying weight are on folding rocking lounger for a small patio.

Stated load and the outdoor seating standard

BS EN 581-2 covers strength and stability of outdoor seats. The published scope of that standard bases the tests on users up to 110 kg, and it does not test ageing from light, temperature or moisture. None of the seven listings cites the standard. A bullet that says 120 kg, 150 kg, 160 kg or 200 kg is the seller’s maximum. It is not a certificate you can treat as a British Standard result. Compare that figure with your own weight, and treat anything above 110 kg as a seller claim you have not seen tested here. The beige Outsunny and the Yaheetech bullet both say 120 kg. The Yaheetech specification field also says 264 pounds. Both lines are on the listing, and this guide does not convert one into the other. The grey Outsunny and the RELAX4LIFE say 160 kg. The Grand patio title or specification says 150 kg, and the dark grey bullet also says 350 pounds. The bamboo listing says 200 kg and has no review line. A heavier stated load is not a reason to ignore a lock that lets go. Stop using a chair whose lock, stopper or hinge no longer holds. This is outdoor furniture for one adult on hard, level ground.

Steel mesh, a cushion, or wood

Textilene on powder-coated steel wipes and dries faster than a thick cushion. It feels firmer, and it can sag. The grey Outsunny is that mesh bed, with a pillow and arm pads, at £43.99. UK reviews praise the airflow once the chair is built, and they also describe rust coming from inside the tubes even when the chair was stored. Powder coat is a finish. It is not a promise that hollow steel stays dry through a British winter. No rain cover is in any of these seven boxes. Cushions come indoors. A sealed plastic sheet over damp tubes holds the water in. The Grand patio pair is the cushioned alternative, at £139.98 in dark grey and £149.98 in off white. The chair is 77.5 x 107 x 68.5 cm, a low lounge seat rather than a 150 cm sunbed, and the two colours share one 4.2-from-222 review line. Wood and aluminium sit outside this batch. British GQ’s Casaria acacia example was £90 with a stated 160 kg and annual oil. Blumfeldt’s Beverly Wood, at £111.99, is an aluminium folder, with the load printed as 120 kg on one colour page. Entry in this batch is about £40 to £70, mid is about £80 to £150, and the bamboo listing is £277.97 with no reviews. Those bands are a rule of thumb, not a market size.

What to do next

If you still have two mechanisms in mind, settle motion against a held angle before you spend. If the chair has to disappear into a hallway cupboard, ignore any listing whose fold field is no. Take the folded size, the stated load, and whether assembly is required. The grey Outsunny needs a build, and many UK reviews wanted a second person. The Yaheetech and the beige Outsunny are sold as no assembly, and they still have a clip or a lock. The RELAX4LIFE and the bamboo lounger have no customer-review line. Leave them until you can see stars, or treat them as a shape only.

Common questions

What should you check before you buy a rocking sun lounger?
Check the motion first, then the folded length, then the stated load against your own weight. A curved base rocks. A lock that holds a legs-up angle is a different chair. In this batch, folders still measure about 104 to 116 cm long when flat. Assembly is required on the grey Outsunny and not required on the Yaheetech and the beige Outsunny. No rain cover is in these boxes.
Is a heavier stated load a British Standard test?
No. BS EN 581-2 bases outdoor-seat tests on users up to 110 kg and does not test weather ageing. Listing figures of 120 to 200 kg in this batch are seller maxima. None of the seven ASINs cites the standard. A higher number is not a certificate, and it does not override a lock that has already failed.
Do rocking loungers fold?
Some do and some do not. Which? says they are not typically foldable. Here the grey Outsunny and both Grand patio colours do not fold. The Yaheetech and the beige Outsunny do, and they remain longer than a metre. The RELAX4LIFE fold field is empty, so this page does not claim that it folds. The bamboo bullets say it folds and give no folded centimetres.
Is textilene enough for a UK winter?
Textilene wipes and dries. The steel tubes under it can still hold water. UK reviews of the grey Outsunny describe rust coming from inside the frame. Bring cushions indoors, keep the chair on hard ground rather than in a puddle, and use a breathable cover or a dry shed. A sealed sheet over damp metal keeps the moisture in. Powder coat is not a no-rust promise.
Steel, aluminium or wood?
This batch is mostly powder-coated steel, plus one bamboo listing with no reviews. Steel is light and cheap, and it rusts if water sits in the tubes. Aluminium, such as the Blumfeldt Beverly Wood at £111.99, is outside this table and rusts less. Acacia, such as GQ’s Casaria example at £90, wants annual oil. Pick the care you will actually do in November.
How much do UK rocking loungers cost?
As a rule of thumb, entry in this batch is about £40 to £70, mid is about £80 to £150, and published upper examples start around £180. The bamboo listing is £277.97. Which? talks about rocking chairs from about £80. Expert Reviews’ VonHaus orb was £70 when that round-up was written. Shelf prices move, so the comparison holds the seven current amazon.co.uk figures.
When is a cushioned lounge chair the wrong sunbed?
When you want to lie flat for an afternoon. The Grand patio chairs are 77.5 x 107 x 68.5 cm with a low seat. UK reviews describe reading and curling up, not a full sunbed. They also do not fold, and the two colours share one 4.2-from-222 review line. A long mesh rocker is the closer shape for sunbathing, with the limit that only the beige Outsunny in this batch lists a canopy.
