sun lounger canopy: what the hood does and does not do

A sun lounger canopy shades your face if the bars arrived in the box. It is not an SPF rating. NHS advice still wants midday shade, clothing and factor 30.

The carton is on the patio, the listing said sun lounger canopy, and the price sat above the plain folding bed. A sun lounger canopy is shade cloth on bars, or a visor, over the head end. It can keep direct sun off your face. It has no SPF number, and your legs stay in the open unless you cover them.

From March to October you still follow the NHS routine: shade between 11am and 3pm, clothing, and sunscreen of at least factor 30 with a 4-star UVA rating. If the bars are missing, or the hood sits on your nose, you have paid for a part you cannot use. Count the bars before anyone lies down.

Products Compared read the NHS sunscreen and sun safety page, the Met Office advice on staying safe in the sun, and Blaby District Council's guide to the 1988 furniture fire regulations, beside the amazon.co.uk listings in our sun lounger with a roof comparison and our aluminium sun lounger comparison in October 2026. Prices and review counts are from that snapshot. We did not laboratory-test a hood or a UV reading under cloth. In short

Count the canopy bars when you open the box, and use the hood as face shade if it sits clear of you. NHS sun safety still means shade between 11am and 3pm from March to October, covering up, and sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with 4-star UVA protection. A hood is one patch of shade. Keep the bottle out anyway.

What a sun lounger canopy is for

A sun lounger canopy is a small roof at the head end. On a flat lounger it is a fabric panel on bars, or a visor over your face. On a zero-gravity chair it is often a rotating hood.

In the October 2026 snapshot, the Homecall 30039 (B07ZPL1XLV) is our top pick on the sun lounger with a roof comparison. It was £124.81, with 4.5 from 1,162 amazon.co.uk reviews. The title says sun roof. The included list names a head cushion, a carrying strap and an adjustable sun visor. UK reviews describe a face shade, not a cover over the whole bed. The stated size is about 200 × 70 cm, the frame is powder-coated aluminium, the item weighs 9.2 kg, and a bullet states 150 kg.

The VOUNOT folding lounger (B0FLJQPFJT) was £29.99, 3.9 from 132 reviews, 186 × 55 × 25 cm and 4.75 kg, with four positions, a stated 120 kg, and a canopy in the bullets. The frame field says metal, so aluminium is not confirmed. Both lines say shade. Neither is a sun protection factor. Width, fold and load wording sit in the buying guide.

Homecall's stored UK reviews say sun comes through the cloth, and that the knurled wheels loosen so the visor drops onto the chest. If you will mostly remove the shade, decide that before you pay extra.

What NHS sunscreen advice still asks of you

The NHS sunscreen and sun safety page is about skin. Shade comes first, then clothing, then sunscreen. A lounger hood can shade your face. It does not replace the rest of that list, and it does not change the season the advice covers.

From March to October, the NHS says the sun is strongest between 11am and 3pm. Skin outside the panel still needs a shirt or sunscreen. Use an SPF of at least 30 against UVB, and at least a 4-star UVA rating. Apply it generously, and apply it again after water or sweat. The NHS warns against using sunscreen as a permit to stay out longer.

The Met Office UV index is the forecast figure. At 3 or above, protect your skin, including on mild days and days with cloud. The NHS also says to take extra care with children. Midday shade, clothing and factor 30 still apply when a child is on the lounger.

We did not meter ultraviolet under a Homecall visor or a VOUNOT hood. A review that says sun comes through the fabric is a shopper's report, not a lab figure. If you see a bright patch on your arm through the panel, treat that arm as exposed.

Missing bars and a sunshade that sits too low

Open the carton before the packaging goes. Lay the bars beside the cloth. Empty sleeves mean the hood is not in that box.

Count the bars before anyone lies down

The VOUNOT bullets claim a canopy. UK reviews in the October 2026 snapshot include at least two reports of missing shade bars. Those reviews are not your parcel. The spec says assembly is not required, and the included line is one sun lounger. Photograph the parts list, the empty sleeves and the delivery date, and write to the seller while the order's return window is open.

Homecall's spec says the bed arrives assembled, with the visor in the included list. You still check that the visor is on the frame and that the wheels hold an angle. A cloth in a pocket, with no bars, is not an assembled hood.

When the sunshade sits too low

A sunshade too low is a different fault. The parts are there, and you still cannot use them. Homecall UK reviews say the visor drops onto the chest when the knurled wheels loosen. VOUNOT reviews describe the shade and the bed as too low. Cloth on your nose blocks your view and presses on skin.

Set the back where you lie, then set the hood. You want a gap, and a shadow on your forehead. If the only clear angle throws the shadow onto the patio, the hood is the wrong shape for your height. On the 55 cm VOUNOT you cannot shift far sideways. The Homecall is about 70 cm wide, and the visor is still only a face shade.

The ATORPOK ZGC002 (B0FJ84J14J) was £69.99, 4.3 from 47 reviews: a 7.72 kg zero-gravity chair with the canopy in the title and the included list. Forty-seven reviews is a thin sample. One UK review says the canopy does not block the sun at any angle. Another says you can sit the shade back.

Wind and a sun lounger with shade

A raised hood gives the wind something to push. The VOUNOT weighs 4.75 kg and the Homecall weighs 9.2 kg. Either can slide or tip on a balcony or an open lawn. We are not stating a wind speed. If you would drop a lightweight parasol, drop this hood, or bring the bed in.

On a beach the same cloth is a sail, and a 4.75 kg bed moves once you walk away. Read the beach page before you carry a hooded bed to the shore. If the tightening wheels already slip while you lie still, they will not hold a gust. Drop the cloth or take the bed inside.

A parasol is a different product

A garden parasol shades a circle of patio from a pole and a base. A sun lounger canopy shades the head end of one bed, and only while the bars are fitted and the cloth sits above you. Choose the parasol when several people share a table. Choose the hood when the shade should fold with one bed. A parasol still needs a base matched to its diameter.

Arms at the rim of a parasol, or under thin lounger cloth, still need clothing and sunscreen. The hood is also a poor den. It is a seat with a stated user load, not a play tent. A child under a low visor can tip a light bed.

Blaby District Council's guide to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 treats a removable outdoor canopy cover as outside the fire-fabric case those rules are aimed at. A lounger hood is shade cloth. A silent product page is not a promise the fabric will not burn. Keep the bed off a barbecue and away from a patio heater. Read any fire sentence on the live listing. If there is none, you have ordinary outdoor fabric.

Common questions

Is a sun lounger canopy the same as SPF?
A sun lounger canopy is shade cloth on bars or a visor. It has no sun protection factor. From March to October the NHS still asks you to spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, to cover up, and to use sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with a 4-star UVA rating on bare skin. If light falls on your arm through the cloth, treat that arm as exposed. We did not meter UV under any hood in this set.
Why does the sunshade sit too low?
A sunshade too low usually means the bars are short for your lie, or the joint has slipped. In the October 2026 snapshot, Homecall 30039 UK reviews say the knurled wheels loosen and the visor drops onto the chest. VOUNOT reviews describe the shade and the bed as too low. Set the back where you lie, then the hood. You want a gap and a shadow on your forehead. Cloth on your nose is not shade you can stay under.
What if the canopy bars are missing?
Count the bars before anyone lies down, and keep the packaging until you have. In the October 2026 snapshot the VOUNOT folding lounger (B0FLJQPFJT, £29.99, 3.9 from 132 reviews) claims a canopy, and UK reviews include at least two reports of missing shade bars. Those reviews are not your carton. Photograph the parts list, the gaps and the delivery date, and write to the seller on the order. A cloth with no bars is a hood you cannot use.
Does a roof make the sun lounger a sail?
A raised hood gives the wind a panel to push. In this October 2026 snapshot the VOUNOT folding lounger weighs 4.75 kg and the Homecall 30039 weighs 9.2 kg. Either can slide or tip on a balcony or an open lawn. We are not stating a wind-speed cutoff. If you would drop a lightweight parasol, drop this hood too, or bring the bed in. On a beach the same cloth is a larger problem, because the bed is light and the site is open.
Can children use the canopy as a den?
Keep the lounger as a lounger. The hood is a face shade on a seat with a stated user load, not a play tent. A child climbing under a low visor can tip a light bed, and cloth on the face is a poor place to play. The NHS says to take extra care with children in the sun: midday shade, clothing, and sunscreen of at least factor 30 on exposed skin. A hood over a child's face does not stand in for those steps.
Is the canopy fabric fireproof?
Treat the hood as ordinary outdoor shade cloth unless the listing prints a fire sentence you can read. Blaby District Council's guide to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 puts a removable outdoor canopy cover outside the fire-fabric case those rules are aimed at. That is not a certificate that the hood will not burn. Keep the bed away from a barbecue and a patio heater. If the page is silent on fire, do not invent a rating from the word canopy.
Do I still need sunscreen in the UK under a hood?
Yes. NHS sunscreen advice applies in the UK from March to October, including under partial shade. Use at least SPF 30 with a 4-star UVA rating on skin the hood does not cover, apply it generously, and apply it again regularly. The Met Office UV index is the forecast figure: at 3 or above, protect your skin, including on cool or cloudy days. A lounger hood can shade your face. Your legs stay in the sun, and the hood does not read the index.
