What to check on a hammock with spreader bar

Updated: October 2026

The amazon.co.uk title says double, a high kilogram figure, and a spreader bar. Those words do not describe one object. A hammock with spreader bar is a garden bed held open by a bar at each end, so you can lie along the length instead of sinking into a gathered cocoon. This checklist covers the bed width, the bar, the capacity printed on that listing, and what is actually in the box. It does not pick a winner and it does not teach the hang. The nine listings, with prices captured on 19 October 2026, sit on the [bar hammock comparison](/hub/sun-loungers/bar-hammock). Products Compared did not lab-test them.

What a spreader bar actually changes

A spreader bar holds the cloth or the rope open, so the bed looks flat and you can see out of it. A gathered-end hammock, the kind with no bar, pulls you into the middle and is generally the more stable sleep. The open bed sits higher, so a roll to one side can tip you. The split is on spreader bar hammock vs gathered end. Do not treat the bar length as the length you lie on. On a specialist single such as the Amazonas Aruba, the bar is about 80 cm and the bed is about 210 × 120 cm. Harbour Housewares prints a bed of 200 × 80 cm, which is the cloth width, not an 80 cm bar on a wider bed.

Width, bar length, and the word double

Read the bed width and the seating field before you trust double. Harbour Housewares B07PRX1YDT is cotton, 200 cm long and 80 cm wide, seating capacity 1, stated maximum 100 kg, at £17.99. An 80 cm cloth will not take two adults side by side. ANYOO B097Y4CDZC prints a bed of 210 × 150 cm, at £27.99, and the seating field still says 1. MOSFiATA B08688PSLV prints 275 × 155 cm and seating 1, at £29.90. The blue ISWEES stand kit, B094W765HT, says double and seating 2, while the item size is 3 × 0.8 m. UK reviews say the bar is too short for two unless they sit very close. The red stand kit, B094W5Y229, prints 3 × 1.35 m and seating 2. Do not copy it onto the blue listing.

Capacity and what is in the box

The kilogram on the page is the seller's stated maximum for that listing. It is not a British Standard result. BS EN 581-1:2017 covers outdoor seating and tables, not hammocks. Keep conflicting lines apart. ANYOO's title says 200 kg and the specification says 450 lb, about the same mass, while seating stays at 1. The blue stand's bullets say 330 lb. The red stand's specification says 300 kg. Those two are not interchangeable. ANYOO includes two straps and two steel carabiners, and the listing says anchors at least 3 m apart. Harbour has hanging loops and does not include metal hooks. MOSFiATA's reviews say people added their own carabiners. Most of the other beds are tie ropes or short loops. If the kit stops at loops, budget for straps before you call the hammock ready.

Cotton in a British summer

Cotton and canvas in this set are not a leave-outside fabric. Simply Hammocks says you should not leave cotton out permanently. Take the bed down when rain is forecast. The HAOHIZE listing has no child warning. If you have no two trees the right distance apart, the bed alone will not stand up. The stand kits are both £75.99. Floor space and the lower capacity are on hammock with stand. Who each listing fits is on best spreader bar hammock.

Common questions

What should you check before you buy a hammock with a spreader bar?
Check four things on that amazon.co.uk listing, not the word double in the title. You want the bed width, the bar, one capacity figure, and the included-components line. An 80 cm bed with seating 1 is one person. Two capacities on one page, or a 40 × 16 cm item size with no hanging length, fail the check. Straps are a separate line from a pair of tie ropes.
Does double mean two adults?
Not in this set. Harbour's 200 × 80 cm bed is seating 1. The blue stand title says double and seating 2, and the item width is still 0.8 m. UK reviews of that kit say the bar is short for two. A 150 cm-class cloth, such as the ANYOO at 210 × 150 cm, is wider, and its seating field still says 1.
What does the kilogram figure actually cover?
It is the seller's stated maximum on that listing. It is not a lab result and not a BS EN 581 certificate. Hammocks are outside that outdoor-seating standard. Where a listing prints 550 lb and 250 kg, those masses agree. Where it prints 550 lb and 660 lb, it does not. Do not copy the red stand's 300 kg onto the blue stand's 330 lb.
Is cotton all right in a British summer?
Cotton is fine for dry afternoons if you take it down. Simply Hammocks advises against leaving cotton out permanently. Occasional rain is tolerated. Days of damp invite mildew, and a cover on a wet hammock can hold that damp in. Wooden bars and spacers also weather if they stay out, which is what individual UK reviews describe.
Do you need straps, or only the short ropes?
You need a suspension that will not cut the tree and will reach your anchors. ANYOO includes two straps and two steel carabiners. Harbour includes loops and not the metal hooks. Most of the other beds include tie ropes or nothing. If the components line stops there, the hammock is not ready to hang until you add straps.
