6 kW sauna heater installation

Updated: October 2026

You have the heater on the drive, the cabin walls are lined, and a neighbour said their stove only took twenty minutes to fit. 6 kW sauna heater installation in the UK still splits into what you may prepare in the room and what must be done by a qualified electrician on a new circuit. Six kilowatts at 230 V is about 26 A of design current, far beyond a 13 A socket, so the visit is notifiable work in England and Wales when it is a fresh circuit in a special location. Our [sauna heater 6kW comparison](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-heater-6kw) shows which listings say no plug.

What you can do before the electrician arrives

You can finalise clearances from the manual: wall height, distance from the bench, and the stone basket layout. You can buy 14–20 kg of sauna stones when the listing says they are not included, and you can mount the bracket if the instructions show a fixed position. Mxmoonant UK reviews mention installs under twenty minutes. That is bracket and wiring prep inside an already certificated supply, not permission to tap an existing ring final. Photograph the data plate and pack the manual for the quote. Note whether the listing mentions 215–240 V single phase or a 380–415 V three-phase option. Our Mxmoonant rows list both, and the wrong assumption at quote stage is expensive. Steam generators add a water inlet, drain and pressure limit that belong to a plumber’s scope. You can route space for the generator cupboard, but you should not connect live steam plumbing without the trades aligned. Room volume should already be settled. If you are still converting metres to cubic metres, finish that on 6 kW sauna heater room size before you book the visit.

What the circuit has to be

Expect conversation about a dedicated radial sized from the plate. Elec-Mate’s sauna guide uses 32 A and 6 mm² as an illustration when the run is favourable. Harvia’s KIP60 sheet specifies 35 A and 3 × 6 mm² on 230 V single phase; Narvi’s 6 kW domestic line cites 35 A and 6 mm² H07RN-F. CGOLDENWALL’s listing text in our set mentions 40 A and 6 mm². The electrician chooses cable and protective device after the run length, installation method and manufacturer’s figure, not after a generic blog table. A French review on a Mxmoonant stove describes the heater running briefly on a 16 A supply before tripping, then needing 32 A and 6 mm². Treat that as evidence that undersized breakers fail in real use, not as DIY advice. Most kept stoves state no plug. If a listing is silent, assume hard wiring.

Cable inside the hot room

BS 7671 Section 703 treats a sauna as a special location. Zone 1 allows only the heater and its associated equipment; sockets are not permitted in the sauna room. Cables in the hot zone need 170°C rated insulation where the standard demands it. Ordinary twin and earth from a DIY shelf is not the default answer. Many installs place the main switch outside the hot space. Extending a spur fails the moment the cable crosses the door into a hot, humid environment. The electrician may also discuss RCD protection. Narvi’s connection notes, quoted on UK shop pages, discuss when the heater circuit is not required on a 30 mA RCD. Your installer reconciles the standard with the manual.

Notification and the certificate

In England and Wales, Part P makes new circuits notifiable, and Approved Document P lists a room containing a sauna heater as a special location. You should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, or the appropriate paperwork for the work done, and, where required, Building Control notification. Do not heat the stones on a new install until signed documentation is in hand. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own building control regimes. The need for competent electrical work is the same even when the Part P label differs. Keep the certificate with the house files for a future sale or insurance question. If the sauna is in a garden room, the cable run length and burial method join the heater plate on the quote sheet. An outbuilding is not an excuse for an undersized breaker because the walk is short.

Steam generators add plumbing

For steam generators, the electrician’s job is only half the picture. You need a water supply, a drain, a steam head penetration, and often a pressure-reducing strategy. CGOLDENWALL overseas reviews mention inlet hammer unless pressure is controlled. LANYU’s kit lists a digital controller that can live inside or outside the steam room; placement still has to respect zones and moisture. Choose the machine type before you schedule trades. If you are unsure whether you are building a cabin or a shower steam room, read steam generator or sauna stove at 6 kW first, then return here with the correct appliance manual.

Common questions

Can I install a 6 kW heater myself?
You may do non-electrical prep if the manual allows it. Connecting a new 6 kW circuit and certificating it is for a qualified electrician in the UK.
What breaker and cable should I expect the quote to mention?
Often a 32–35 A class discussion with 6 mm², but the data plate and the cable run decide the final design.
Why is there no plug?
The design current is far above a domestic plug rating. Listings that say no plug expect hard wiring.
Does the heater circuit need a 30 mA RCD?
It may, depending on board design and Section 703. The installer follows BS 7671 and the manufacturer’s instructions together.
What certificate should I keep?
The electrical installation certificate for the new circuit, and any building control notification paperwork relevant to your nation.
What changes if the sauna is in a garden room?
Longer runs, burial or containment, and possibly voltage drop calculations join the standard heater requirements.
Where does a steam generator add a plumber?
At the water inlet, the drain, the steam head penetration, and any pressure-control valves the manual names.
