Hot tub cover leaking, blown off, or too heavy to lift

Updated: October 2026

Rain is on the lid, the sheet is in the hedge, or the cover that used to lift now sits like a soaked mattress. Those are three different failures, and a hot tub cover leaking is only one of them. Buying another £25 sheet answers only the first, and only if you still have a sound lid underneath. The listings in the [hot tub cover comparison](/hub/steam-baths/hot-tub-cover) show all three patterns in the reviews. Notes are from 19 October 2026. We did not inspect your spa. Rain through a thin cap

Day-one leaks are a description problem. The dDanke at £21, titled 200 × 200 × 85 cm, is sold as waterproof, and one review says rain left a pool underneath after three weeks. Other reviews of the same 4.1 from 235 say a winter stayed dry. You cannot average that into waterproof enough. The Rocita at £25.99, 210D and 820 g, is called heavy duty on the listing and thin as newspaper in reviews. The GIONAR 420D pages, 3.8 from a shared 120 reviews, include both not waterproof and one buyer who called it waterproof. The disagreement is the evidence. If the sheet let water through as soon as it rained, another copy of the same cloth is a poor repair. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, says goods must match the description. Section 19 is the remedy framework. It does not promise that Amazon will refund you. Keep the photographs. The buying guide is where the waterproof bullet gets checked against the hard-cover sentence before you order a replacement jacket.

A cap that leaves in the wind

Wind lift can happen to a sheet that is still dry. dDanke reviewers say the cover stays loose with the drawstring pulled and lifts easily. A Rocita review says an extra strap was still needed. The ULTCOVER pages claim elastic cords and side vents. Vents let the skirt settle instead of ballooning. They are not a lock. If the hem will not tighten, the WGFOIP review is the extreme: one buyer, 1.0 star, flimsy, and it would not tighten. Castle Hot Tubs’ storm note is about the hard lid, which can sail, and about using the straps that belong to that lid. It also says not to load the middle of the foam. A weight in the centre is how a foam core gets a permanent puddle and a bent hinge. When the sheet is in the border, dry it and see whether the hem cord is still in the channel. Fitting the hem is on how to fit a hot tub cover.

A lid that has gained weight

The third failure is the foam core. WhatSpa? treats a sagging middle as a waterlogged lid. Covers for Tubs describes water in the foam, lids over about 110 kg, and replacement as the practical fix, with a warning about injury if you wrestle the cover. Once the vinyl seam has opened, rain and condensation fill the foam, and the lid gets heavier each wet week. A cap cannot wring that out. Do not buy the dDanke, the Rocita or a GIONAR sheet to hide a heavy lid. Do not cut the vinyl open to dry the foam on the patio. If the lid is too heavy for you, stop lifting it. A lid that has to be dragged is the replacement case on the hard cover or cover cap page, at workshop prices from £495, not at £26 on amazon.co.uk. If a SHATCHI bladder has gone soft in 4–5 days, that is air loss, not soaked foam. Do not diagnose a cabinet lid from a bladder that lives on the water.

What to do next

Name the failure before you open a listing. Rain through a thin cap in the first month: the seller conversation is about the listing’s waterproof line, with photos, under the Consumer Rights Act as a frame and without a guaranteed refund. A cap in the hedge: refit only if the hem still fastens, and do not load the foam. A lid you can barely lift, with a sagging middle: replace the lid. The ULTCOVER reviews add a fourth timing. Owners report stitching failing after about 18 months and waterproofing gone after just over a year. A cap that earned its keep and then opened at the seams is a worn jacket, not proof the foam underneath has failed. If the vinyl is still sound, you are replacing a jacket. If the lid is heavy, you are replacing the lid. No elastic cord in this set changes a waterlogged core, and no star rating is a lock.

Common questions

Why is rain on top of the hard lid?
Because the jacket above it is not a sealed roof, or because the lid’s own vinyl is holding a puddle in a sag. On the dDanke, one review found a pool underneath after three weeks. Rain on top of a healthy lid is a cap problem. Rain that sits in a sagging middle is the foam taking water.
Why did a waterproof sheet let water through immediately?
Several listings say waterproof and the reviews disagree at once. The Rocita is sold as heavy duty and described as newspaper-thin. If water went through on the first rain, the cloth is behaving like the critical reviews, not like a seam you can tape in the garden.
Why did a good cap start leaking a year later?
The shared ULTCOVER reviews describe stitching falling apart after about 18 months and waterproofing failing after just over a year. That is wear on a 600D jacket. A worn cap over a light, locking lid is a new jacket. A worn cap over a heavy lid is a new lid.
What if the cover is in the garden after wind?
Dry it and see whether the drawstring, elastic cords or buckle are still able to meet. Refit only if the hem still works. Do not weigh the middle of a foam lid with bricks. Castle Hot Tubs tells you the lid can sail and that the middle of the foam should not be loaded.
Why is the lid suddenly too heavy to lift?
Water in the foam. WhatSpa? uses a sagging middle as the sign. Covers for Tubs warns against wrestling a lid that has taken on water. The cap will not remove the weight. Stop lifting if it is more than you can do safely.
What can I ask the seller for?
A remedy that follows the description you were given. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires goods to match the description, and section 19 sets out the remedy structure. It does not require a particular amazon.co.uk outcome. If the lid is heavy, the seller of a £25 cap is the wrong counterparty.
