Novus stapler buying guide: choose the right desk model

Updated: October 2026

Choosing a Novus stapler starts with the paper on your desk, not the colour of the casing. A student fastening ten-page notes, an office filing 40-sheet packets and an accounts team joining near-100-sheet bundles need different mechanisms and staple families. This Novus stapler buying guide puts those decisions in order: realistic stack size, staple series, clinch style and only then price or appearance. You can compare all twelve captured amazon.co.uk listings on the [main Novus stapler comparison](/hub/staplers-and-nail-guns/novus-stapler). Prices and ratings below are captured listing figures rather than promises that today's shelf price will be unchanged.

Start with the stack

Printed capacity is the first useful filter, but it is a maximum for the paper described by the listing. The compact B 10FC states 20 sheets of 80 gsm, the B 2 colours state 25 sheets of 80 g/m², and the Sturdy moves to a stated 30 sheets. The middle group includes the B 4 re+new at a stated 40 sheets, plus the B 4FC and B 8FC at 50. Reviews of the B 4FC often describe practical results around 30 to 40 sheets. Near 100 sheets, move to the B 40 pair and read the separate Novus heavy-duty stapler guide before buying refills.

Then match the staple series

A stapler's staple family is a compatibility rule, not a suggestion. The B 10FC and both E 15 twin sets use No. 10 staples. The two B 2 colours and the Sturdy name 24/6 and 26/6. The B 4 re+new, B 4FC, B 7A and B 8FC also list the longer 24/8 and 26/8 sizes for thicker packets. Novus's manufacturer information specifies the 23/6 to 23/13 SUPER series for the B 40 models. The standard B 40 Amazon bullets omit the series, while the B 40 re+new bullet prints a conflicting range beginning at 26/6. Do not assume that 26/6 is correct.

Choose the clinch, pin or punch

Ordinary closed stapling bends the two legs inwards under the packet. An open or removable setting bends them outwards, making temporary removal easier. These reversible-anvil functions do not make a tool flat clinch. Flat clinch folds the legs flatter against the underside of the paper. In this set, only the B 10FC, B 4FC and B 8FC state that feature. Novus says the flatter result can save up to 30% of binder space, but this is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently measured result. The detailed trade-offs are covered in the Novus flat-clinch stapler guide. The E 15 twin sets solve a different problem. Each combines a 15-sheet stapler with a ten-sheet punch and 1,000 No. 10 staples. UK review extracts include early breakage reports for both staplers and punches.

Use price as the final filter

The captured entry band runs roughly from £5 to £13. Low price does not erase a mismatch: the B 10FC remains No. 10 and 20 sheets, while the B 4 re+new has only four displayed reviews and one available review reports performance well below its 40-sheet claim. Around £22 to £31, the B 4FC buys flat clinch at a stated 50 sheets, while the B 7A buys a spring-assisted touch action for up to eight sheets and a normal press up to 30. In the upper band, the B 40 pair target 100-sheet work and the B 8FC targets lever-assisted flat clinching up to 50 sheets. Count the largest normal stack, check the staple series already in your cupboard, then decide whether ordinary, removable or flat clinching is required. For a concise shortlist after that check, see the best Novus stapler picks.

Common questions

Do I start with colour or sheet count?
Start with your normal and maximum stack. Colour only separates otherwise similar choices, such as the mint and grey B 2 listings. Both state 25 sheets of 80 g/m² paper and use 24/6 or 26/6 staples, so neither colour changes the working capacity.
When is No. 10 the wrong refill?
No. 10 is wrong whenever the model specifies a different family. In this comparison it belongs to the B 10FC and the two E 15 twin sets. Do not load it into a B 2, B 4FC, B 7A, B 8FC or B 40.
Is flat clinch the same as open stapling?
No. Flat clinch folds the staple legs close against the packet to reduce bulk. Open stapling bends the legs outwards so the staple is easier to remove. A reversible anvil offering open and closed settings does not imply flat clinch.
Does an 80 g/m² capacity apply to card?
Not reliably. A sheet-count claim tied to 80 g/m² copier paper is not a promise for card or heavier presentation stock. Leave capacity margin and make a careful first test rather than forcing the mechanism at its printed maximum.
Why do the B 2 colours share one review count?
The mint and grey captures both show 4.6 stars from 256 reviews and contain overlapping review material. Treat that as a shared parent-listing count, not as two independent samples of 256 users.
Is the B 7A an electric stapler?
No. It uses a spring-assisted touch action for up to eight sheets and a normal hand press for thicker stacks up to the stated 30. No mains lead or battery operation is listed.
