900M vs T18 soldering tips

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are holding a worn tip from a Hakko, or from a Yihua that the listing also calls Hakko, and the next amazon.co.uk page mixes both names. 900M vs T18 soldering tips is a series choice, not a brand argument. T18 is what Hakko specifies for current FX-8801 class handpieces. 900M is the older sleeve for 907 and 936 barrels, and it is what most cheap packs in this set actually are. Prices are the amazon.co.uk capture on the [soldering tips comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/soldering-tips). We did not time heat recovery. What each series is

A T18 tip seats in handles such as the FX-8801 on FX-888D class stations. In this set that is the T18-D32, 3.2 mm by 0.5 mm by 14.5 mm, about £6.08, 4.7 from 582 reviews, for FX-888 series irons and the FX-600. A 900M tip is a sleeve over a separate heater. Saipor puts that sleeve at 6.5 mm outside. HANZMQIYJJ puts it at 6.0 mm outside. How to tell the handpieces apart is on the soldering tip buying guide. Hakko still treats T18 as the current standard. T12 and T15 cartridges are absent here.

What you pay per tip

The T18-D32 is about £6.08 for one chisel. KTPCN is about £7.99 for a stated 14 profiles, 4.4 from 159 reviews, about 57p if every piece is a tip you will heat. Hanglife is about £11.99, and Saipor about £6.99 for ten of one shape. HANZMQIYJJ is about £4.78 for 12 listed shapes and 3.5 from two reviews.

What the performance claims are worth

Hakko’s reason for T18 is thermal recovery: seconds back to temperature after a joint steals heat. For one hobby joint a minute, those seconds are easy to overstate. For a ground pin, a cold tip is why the pad lifts. We have not repeated that measurement. Hakko notes include storage rust. A Saipor needle blackened almost at once. Hanglife notes include coating loss at 400°C. A loose bore, which one reviewer found with a 4 mm drill inside a hole sold as 4 mm, makes recovery talk irrelevant.

The risk of mixing the series

Hanglife claims Hakko among a long brand list, and a captured review says the tips do not fit a Hakko FX-601. Another says they do not fit a Yihua station or a Yihua 9390+ III. KTPCN names a similar list, and one buyer says they do not fit a Ryobi iron because the hole is wrong. The comparison table marks some packs with an OEM cell that says Hakko. The brands are Hanglife and KTPCN. Forcing a 900M sleeve into a T18 receptacle, or cranking the nut to hide a loose bore, strips the part a refund will not replace. A no-name 936 clone does not need a genuine T18.

Which one to buy

If the handpiece is FX-8801 class, or an FX-888 or FX-600, buy the T18-D32 at about £6.08. The 3.2 mm face is wide for fine pitch. If the handpiece is a 936-style nut, buy 900M. KTPCN at about £7.99 is the best value there, if you accept the 14-versus-10 wording. Hanglife at about £11.99 only if your station is not a reported Yihua or FX-601 miss. A Saipor ten-pack is ten of one shape. Skip the about £4.78 set, and do not buy either series for a cartridge iron.

Common questions

Can I use 900M tips on an FX-8801?
Not as a plan. The FX-8801 is a T18 handpiece, and the matching row is the T18-D32 at about £6.08. A forced fit damages the nut or the heater. If your station is an FX-888D with an FX-8801, order T18. A pack that prints Hakko is often advertising 936-class compatibility, which a Hanglife buyer found did not include an FX-601.
Is T18 worth the extra cost?
On a T18 iron, yes, because the 900M alternative may not belong on it. About £6.08 for the D32 is less than Hanglife’s about £11.99, with 582 reviews at 4.7. You would be paying extra only on a 936 clone, where T18 is the wrong spend. The later extra is a finer T18 if 3.2 mm gets in the way.
Do 900M tips wear faster?
Often in these notes, and not on a clock we measured. The Saipor needle pack includes blackening almost immediately. Hanglife includes coating loss at 400°C. The Hakko file is kinder on life and still includes storage rust. Replace when solder will not wet. The Saipor 50,000-joint line is not a comparison with T18.
Will a Yihua station take T18 tips?
Only if that Yihua handpiece is actually T18, which most budget Yihua stations are not. The usual fit in this set is 900M, and even that fails in Hanglife reviews for a Yihua station and a 9390+ III. Check the old tip’s diameter before you trust a title that mentions Hakko.
How much does heat recovery differ in practice?
On Hakko’s move from older tips to T18, the published gap is seconds back to a high temperature after a joint. That matters on a ground plane. It barely matters for one wire a minute, if the tip is seated. A loose 900M bore removes the advantage, because the heater is not touching the sleeve. We did not measure these eight ASINs.
Should a hobbyist buy a pack or an OEM tip?
Match the iron first. An FX-888 owner should buy the T18-D32, tin it, and add a finer T18 when 3.2 mm is too wide. A 936-class station is where KTPCN at about £7.99 belongs, as a drawer of 900M shapes, with the piece-count and fit limits on that row. A pack on the wrong series is not thrift.
