Aluminium MIG on hobby multiprocess machines

Updated: 21 October 2026

A listing says aluminium MIG and the photo shows a steel spool of flux-core. You are trying to learn whether alloy welding is real on a £100–£250 amazon.co.uk inverter, or a marketing line on the same box you would buy for steel. This page separates kit facts from title claims. Steel-first shopping stays on the [MIG/MAG welding machine comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/mig-mag-welding-machine). Supply limits and socket reality are in the buying guide linked below. We did not run an alloy weld test. The checks come from listing components and the review notes stored with this set.

What makes aluminium different on a wire feeder

Aluminium wire is soft, it sheds heat quickly, and it bird-nests in a steel liner. You usually need a U-groove roller, a Teflon or graphite liner for 0.8–1.0 mm alloy wire, and often a spool gun so the wire travels a short path. Trade shops run spray or pulse MIG on argon, sometimes with helium. These inverters can list aluminium or pulse without the torch, the regulator or a spool gun. On the HZXVOGEN 250 A row, buyers found those torches sold separately. Flux-core is a steel path. For alloy, plan gas and the kit, not the starter flux spool.

What the eight listings actually claim

In the October 2026 capture, aluminium is in the title on the Reboot RBM205PRO, the Reboot RBM2100 MAX and the HZXVOGEN HVM205P. It is absent on the FEIFANKE 145, the HITBOX, the HZXVOGEN 250 A and the DEKO. That absence signals steel-first positioning, even if extras could add alloy later. The HVM205P lists a graphene liner. A spool gun is not established as included. The RBM205PRO copy names an MB15 Teflon liner family and an optional spool gun, and this capture has no UK reviews for that row. HITBOX comments on positive earth and alloy are enthusiast trials. None of the eight prints a duty figure for a long alloy seam.

Spool guns, liners and rollers

Before you buy alloy wire, read the components line. Is a spool gun included or only another SKU? What liner material and diameter are fitted? Are the rolls U-groove or only a steel V-groove? Which gas and flow does the manual give for alloy? Is pulse on the panel? If an answer is missing, assume steel-only and budget the parts. A later spool gun needs the maker’s matched connector. Keep opened aluminium wire sealed and dry. A bird-nest in a steel liner usually means cutting and rethreading the reel.

What to expect from hobby power

With the right kit, alloy MIG here is short tacks on thin section. Clean oxide with a stainless brush kept for aluminium. Preheat only if the manual allows it. Heat soaks away faster than on mild steel. Lift TIG can be easier to control on thin alloy once you own the torch and the argon. HSE fume rules still apply: oxide and magnesium-bearing fume need real control. A 13 A plug, as on the buying guide, is for short tacks. These machines do not publish a duty cycle for long seams.

When to stay on steel or call a professional

Stay on mild steel if the work is gates, trailers and furniture tube. Call a professional for structural alloy, load-bearing castings, fuel tanks and any joint that needs a qualified procedure. A hobby title does not carry that liability. If alloy is optional, buy for steel first. Gas or gasless MIG is that choice. Add alloy only after the liner, the roller and the gas are named on the listing.

Rows to inspect first for alloy intent

The RBM205PRO and the HVM205P have the clearest liner language. Check the live accessories before you pay mid-tier money. The RBM2100 MAX puts aluminium in the title and rests on 21 reviews, so confirm a spool gun and that any wire is actually boxed. The 250 A row drew alloy buyers who then found torches and pulse missing. The HITBOX comments are enthusiast notes on a steel-first file.

Common questions

Can I weld aluminium with flux-core wire?
Not in the usual hobby sense for a sound structural alloy joint. Plan gas-shielded alloy wire with the correct liner, roller and, often, a spool gun. The flux spool in a starter kit is a steel consumable.
Does 5-in-1 aluminium mean the machine is ready to weld?
It means the modes exist in the marketing. The torch, liner, rollers and gas may still be extras. Read the components list literally. If a spool gun is described as optional, it is not in the box you are paying for today.
Which gas for aluminium MIG?
Argon, or an argon-helium mix, as the wire and the manual specify. Hire-shop staff can match a UK bottle. Do not reuse an ad-hoc CO₂ steel mix on alloy without guidance from the wire data sheet and the machine manual.
Is a graphite or Teflon liner enough?
It helps. Drive rolls and spool-gun length matter as much. A soft liner with steel knurled rolls still shreds aluminium wire. You want a U-groove roll sized to the wire, and a path short enough that the wire does not buckle.
Can I swap steel wire onto the same machine?
Clean the path, change the liner if the manual says so, swap the rollers to U-groove, and purge the gas lines. Skipping those steps bird-nests alloy wire immediately. Keep the steel spool sealed away from the alloy spool so you do not reload the wrong reel.
Why do reviews mention positive earth?
Some inverters wire torch polarity for alloy or for lift TIG experiments. Follow the manual for the mode you selected. Car-battery habits are a poor guide. Wrong polarity on flux-core steel already makes a wild arc. Alloy is less forgiving.
