GYS welder setup UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

The parcel has arrived, the dial is at minimum, and you are not sure whether the plug fits the ring main or whether flux-core wants the same polarity as solid wire. GYS welder setup UK means checking power, earth, and process before you strike an arc on anything that matters. This page covers first power-up for GYSMI stick sets and SMARTMIG or Easymig wire machines from the [GYS welder comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/gys-welder). It does not rank models. Choice belongs on the [GYS welder buying guide](/hub/soldering-and-welding/gys-welder/sub/gys-welder-buying-guide). The steps follow listing specifications, GYS installation notes, HSE welding controls, and TWI mains guidance. Listings were checked in October 2026.

Unbox, rating plate, and plug

Read the rating plate before you energise the set. Confirm voltage, current class, and the UKCA or CE mark as printed. EN 60974 in a title is a claim, not a certificate you hold. GYSMI listings often say UK plug. UK reviews often report a Euro plug plus an adaptor. If you fit a BS 1363 moulded plug, match the fuse and do not bypass it. Short mains leads are a common complaint on the 160P and 130P. On the SMARTMIG 110, check the torch, cable, and earth clamp before power. If anything looks crushed, use the seller return route.

Stick connection and arc aids

Clamp the earth to clean work and fit the electrode holder. DC stick polarity follows the manual for the rod. GYSMI listings name rutile and basic rods. The 160P allows roughly 1.6–4 mm within 10–160 A. The 130P accessory listing allows 1.6–3.2 mm on 10–130 A. Start Hot Start, Arc Force, and Anti-Stick near the factory defaults, then adjust on scrap. On some 130P units the current dial is also the off switch. Turn it down and unplug when you finish. Rods, a mask, and gloves are often not in the box.

MIG and gasless polarity

Put the earth on the work and the torch on the polarity the mode requires. Flux-core often differs from solid wire with gas. Easymig notes flag reverse polarity for cored wire, so read that diagram before you load a spool. Connect gas on a SmartMig 142 or SMARTMIG 152 only for solid wire. SMARTMIG 110 is gas-free only, despite a 2-in-1 gas line. Follow the gas-free row and buy cored wire suited to gasless. Load the reel size the model states, and tension the drive rolls so the wire does not slip. Seat a Euro torch on the Easymig. Do not force a loose tip.

Power supply habits on a UK 13 A circuit

TWI notes that a UK 13 A plug limits a single-phase arc set compared with a continental 16 A circuit. Uncoil an extension fully. A nested cable on a ring main adds heat. Keep other heavy loads off that ring while you weld. GYS installation text prefers a higher-rated socket for intensive 160P use even when a 13 A plug is supplied. Use a generator only if the manual and the generator output match continuous inverter demand. If the case tingles, or the breaker trips on scrap, stop and get the installation checked.

First arc, PPE, and fume

Use an auto-darkening filter to BS EN 379 where you can, fire-resistant clothing, and gauntlets. Indoors, HSE expects local exhaust for mild steel welding fume, including short welds. Outdoors, use respiratory protection with an assigned protection factor of 20 or better. Practise on scrap of the same thickness: tacks, then longer beads as the duty cycle allows. SMARTMIG 110 reviewers hit thermal cut-out on long seams. Learn that on scrap. Outdoor flux-core is on gasless GYS welding outdoors. Process choice is on GYS MMA or MIG.

Common questions

What should I check in the box before first use?
The welder, the earth lead, the stinger or torch, any adaptor, the manual, and the chart. Do not assume consumables are included. Rods, wire, gas, and a mask are often separate purchases.
How do I fit a UK plug if a Euro plug arrived?
Use a correct fuse, tight terminals, and a proper cable grip. Many buyers replace the adaptor with a moulded BS 1363 plug rather than stacking adaptors. If you are not confident with a plug, get it done for you.
Where do the earth and work leads go on a GYSMI and on MIG?
The earth clamp goes to the workpiece. The electrode holder or torch connects as the manual polarity diagram shows. Do not swap the leads blindly between stick and MIG on a multiprocess set.
What polarity is gasless flux-core on an Easymig or a dual MIG model?
Follow the flux-core diagram in the manual. It is often different from solid wire with gas. The Easymig listing highlights reverse polarity for cored wire.
Can I use an extension reel coiled on a 13 A circuit?
Uncoil it fully and keep the run short. A coiled extension is a common cause of heat and voltage drop on an inverter welder.
How do I set Hot Start and Arc Force on a GYSMI?
Start at the manufacturer defaults on scrap. Raise Hot Start if the arc struggles to ignite, and Arc Force if the arc stalls in the pool. Take small steps, and note the setting that works for that rod size.
Do I need gas connected before the first arc on a SmartMig 142?
Only for solid-wire MIG. Flux-core mode runs without gas once the polarity and the wire type are correct.
What scrap sequence should I use before real work?
Set the controls and the PPE first, practise on scrap of the same thickness, then move to the real joint when the beads are repeatable. Fume controls apply from the first arc.
