Dog urine patches and lawn seed

Updated: October 2026

The lawn has round brown circles with a darker green rim, almost always where the dog stops. Dog urine patches and lawn seed are a repair for that dead centre, plus a change in what happens there next week. A pet-friendly line on a packet does not make the new grass shrug off the next puddle, and it does not mean the seed is safe to eat. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, updated on 16 October 2026, using Rolawn and the amazon.co.uk listings in our set. We did not run a laboratory trial. The wider shortlist is on our [lawn repair seed comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/lawn-repair-seed).

A green ring is concentrated nitrogen

Rolawn describes a round brown patch with a green ring. Urine lands as concentrated nitrogen and salts. The rim gets a thinner dose and grows darker. The middle is scorched. Leave the lime in the shed. Rolawn and the Johnsons note both describe nitrogen and salts. If you see the dog go, pour a watering can over the fresh spot. You will miss plenty of puddles, particularly from a dog that empties in one place, which is the habit GardenScout describes for many female dogs. Once the centre is brown, rake out the dead grass, loosen the soil, and reseed only that middle. The green ring is still alive. You are repairing a circle, often around 30–45 cm. Forking and the first cut are in how to repair bare patches in a lawn.

Pet-friendly is not a neutraliser

Grassias and Fast Grass use pet-friendly wording. UK GROW says pet-safe. Patch Magic reviews sometimes mention puppy patches, without a neutraliser in the bullets. Those lines do not mean the grass will survive urine, or that a dog or a child can eat the seed. Gro-Sure Smart Patch, ASIN B088K89LBT, is the only listing that names a salt and ammonia neutraliser. It was about £17.98 for a 4.8 kg tub, titled as 60 patches, with 4.0 stars from 33 ratings. The tub is a seed mix, not 4.8 kg of grass seed. Westland limits it to patches of about 45 cm. Seven reviews split between growth and no effect. Johnsons’ cultivar claim stays with Johnsons. Kit-versus-seed maths are on the patch kit or grass seed comparison. Ordinary wear, sun, or shade sits on the best lawn repair seed page.

Keep the dog off the new patch

The repair fails when the same corner is used again before the seedlings root. GardenScout advises a hard-wearing mix and keeping the dog off. The RHS says heavy wear wants a utility mix. Our listings do not all confirm a ryegrass share, so a pet-friendly title is not proof of one. Mesh, a low hurdle, or walking the dog elsewhere for a few weeks is the practical version. If the circle keeps dying, give the dog a toilet spot on gravel, mulch, or a bed, and water fresh accidents when you see them. A neutraliser does not cancel a second puddle. If the brown area spreads in mild wet weather, or the soil stays sodden, that pattern sits closer to disease or drainage than to urine.

Repair the centre, then change the corner

Dilute a puddle you see, and reseed only a centre that is already dead. Choose Smart Patch when you want the named neutraliser on a set of small circles. A pet-friendly title does not replace mesh, a different walking route, or a toilet spot that is not lawn.

Common questions

Why is the middle of the patch brown and the edge greener?
Urine hits the lawn as concentrated nitrogen and salts. Rolawn describes a round brown centre with a green ring. The rim receives a smaller dose and grows darker green. The middle receives enough to scorch the grass. The ring is not a cue to add lime, because Rolawn and the Johnsons dog-urine note describe nitrogen and salts. Rake and reseed the dead centre once it is brown, and leave the live green rim alone.
Will pet-friendly grass seed survive the next puddle?
Pet-friendly wording does not make the grass urine-proof. Grassias and Fast Grass use that wording, and UK GROW says pet-safe. Those lines mean you are not being told to shut the animal out of the garden for good. They do not mean the seedlings will cope with another concentrated puddle, and they do not mean the seed is safe to eat. If the dog uses the same circle while the repair is young, the centre can scorch again. Dilute fresh spots and keep paws off the new growth.
Which lawn repair listing mentions urine chemistry?
Gro-Sure Smart Patch, ASIN B088K89LBT, is the only product in this set that names a salt and ammonia neutraliser for dog spots. It was about £17.98 for a 4.8 kg tub, titled as 60 patches, with 4.0 stars from 33 ratings on amazon.co.uk. Patch Magic reviews sometimes mention puppy patches, without a neutraliser in the bullets. Westland still limits Smart Patch to patches of about 45 cm. Seven reviews in our notes split between growth and no effect.
Should I water a fresh dog spot on the lawn?
Water it if you see it happen. Pour a watering can over the fresh puddle to dilute the nitrogen and salts before they scorch the centre. Rolawn gives that rinse as the first response, then raking, loosening, and reseeding once a patch has died. You will not catch every visit, and a dog that empties in one corner is easy to miss. Watering a fresh spot does not repair a centre that is already brown. That dead middle still needs loosening and seed.
Can the dog walk on new grass seed?
Keep the dog off the sown circle until the seedlings have rooted and thickened. Paws disturb seed sitting in the top of the soil, and a new puddle on the same spot can scorch the regrowth. Mesh or a low barrier for a few weeks is enough on a single circle. The Smart Patch line that pets need not be excluded refers to the garden as a whole. It is not permission to use the new patch as a toilet in the first fortnight.
What if the same urine circle keeps dying?
The dog is still using that corner. Reseeding without a change of access repeats the scorch, whether or not the packet says pet-friendly. Give the dog a toilet spot on gravel or mulch, or walk them to a different part of the garden, and water fresh accidents when you see them. A special cultivar from another brand is not required, and Johnsons’ dog-patch claim should not be pinned on Smart Patch. If the brown area spreads in mild wet weather, look at disease or drainage.
