Bonsai seeds UK: six checks to make before you buy

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with a basket that says bonsai and a price that looks like a small gift. The line under it might be a kit, a maple title, or a silk tree. This page is the order of checks: which line to read before the price. The [bonsai seeds comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/bonsai-seeds) holds the four-row table. A packet sold as bonsai seed is ordinary tree or shrub seed. If the title will not name the species, you cannot match it to a winter, a warm spell, or a windowsill. Price and a seed count are the wrong first sort. The listings were read in October 2026. No germination test was run.

There is no bonsai seed

The word bonsai describes training. Pine, elm, maple, juniper, and a tropical such as ficus are ordinary species that people later prune and pot. An unnamed mix hides the chill. A fantasy leaf colour is not a species. Marketed UK ornamental seed is expected to have a satisfactory identity under the ornamental propagating material rules. That is a legal frame, not a germination result from this page. Two kept listings say Japanese maple and then write Acer Palatum. The species is Acer palmatum. The RHS says named cultivars do not come true from seed. Specialist packets in this research are about £2 to £4, including RP Seeds from £2.50. A plain name is already cheap.

Name, method, then the box

Read the species first. Mixed seed can be an honest gift if the listing says the packets are unidentified. A colour plus a misspelling should stop you before the stars. Read the method second. Dry Japanese maple usually needs warmth and then cold. A very easy indoor bullet on a maple title fights that. Week counts sit on Japanese maple bonsai seeds. Read the box third. Fifty seeds do not prove maple. The Gift Republic kit is four unnamed packets, five coconut-husk pots, five coir discs and five markers, at £12.40. Five pots do not match four packets.

Indoor, price, and the import line

Read indoor or outdoor fourth. The RHS puts Japanese maple, pines, larch and yew outdoors, and keeps indoor bonsai for tropical plants. Indoor on a maple title does not move maple indoors. Read price fifth. Named packets in this research are about £2 to £4. A complete kit is about £12 to £19. This kit is £12.40. A 5.0 from two reviews, with no text, is a thinner file than 4.2 from 2,610. Read import last, only if the parcel is posted from outside Great Britain. Use the plant-health checker. Northern Ireland uses different rules. An origin line is not a phytosanitary certificate.

How the four listings score

B000ZUDW5K passes the contents check and fails the species check on purpose. Origin is printed as the United Kingdom. The score is 4.2 from 2,610 reviews, split between sprouts and no germination. B07G9CQPRP is 20 seeds at £5.99, outdoor, 4.0 from three reviews. The title says Acer Palatum, the brand field says SwansGreen, and one UK review says there is no pot. B01LBHSPGQ is 50 seeds at the same price, indoor, and a bullet says very easy. The score is 2.2 from eight reviews. UK reviews say the seeds do not look like acer, and that growth after three days looked like cress. B07VG3YMWZ is 50 albizia seeds at £5.99, outdoor, height field 50 centimetres, and the title also says rainbow. The score is 5.0 from two reviews with no text. If you want a styled tree this year, that fork is bonsai from seed or a young plant.

When to leave the basket

Leave the basket when the title will not name a plant you can look up, when indoor is printed on a hardy outdoor species, or when you need the box photograph this Christmas. Stay when the name is plain and you accept that styling waits years. £5.99 is not best value here.

Common questions

What should I check before I buy bonsai seeds in the UK?
Check the species name, then whether it needs a cold or warm spell, then whether pots and compost are in the box. Then read indoor or outdoor against the plant, then price, then stars with the review count. If the parcel is posted from outside Great Britain, use the GOV.UK plant-health tool. Northern Ireland is a different regime. A low price does not repair a title that will not name the tree.
Is a mixed kit easier than a named packet?
Easier on the first Saturday, because the Gift Republic kit includes five coir pots and five compost discs at £12.40. Harder later, because the four packets are unnamed and one fridge setting cannot suit every species. A named packet at about £2 to £4 makes you buy a pot and tells you which calendar to follow.
Why does the review count matter more than a 5.0 score?
The albizia listing shows 5.0 from two reviews and no written comments, so you cannot see germination or a wrong seed. The Gift Republic kit shows 4.2 from 2,610 reviews, and those reviews disagree. The 50-seed maple title shows 2.2 from eight reviews, and the comments are about identity. Read the count and the sentences together.
Can I grow a Japanese maple packet on a windowsill because the field says indoor?
The field is a listing attribute. The RHS places Japanese maple with outdoor bonsai. One kept title says indoor and very easy, which conflicts with warm-then-cold methods for dry Acer palmatum. A tropical indoor bonsai can start on a windowsill. Maple marked indoor is still maple.
Do I need a plant-health certificate for a packet already on amazon.co.uk?
Not automatically. Controls depend on the species and where the parcel is sent from. United Kingdom on the Gift Republic kit is still not a certificate. If dispatch is from outside Great Britain, use the official checker. Northern Ireland is a different rule set. Seed in your hand is a sowing question.
