Flap disc for stainless steel

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a stainless bracket or a weld on 304 sheet, and you do not want a tea-stain of rust a fortnight later. A flap disc for stainless steel has to cut the weld without smearing ordinary steel grit into the surface. The seven amazon.co.uk packs in our [125 mm flap disc comparison](/hub/sanders/flap-discs-125) often print the word stainless. None of the extracted fields say the grain is iron-free. We checked those listings on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test of these ASINs. If you buy through our links, a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What stainless asks of the disc

Stainless steel work-hardens if you linger, and it shows heat colours that mild steel hides under paint. A flap disc is still the right family of tool when a rigid grinding disc would gouge a thin sheet, because the flaps blend as they cut. You want a 125 mm disc only if the grinder is 125 mm, with the usual 22.23 mm bore, and a maximum rpm the tool does not exceed. About 12,200 rpm at 80 m/s is the figure to compare with the grinder plate. A Type 29 at roughly 15 to 25 degrees, light pressure, and a disc kept moving is the how to use a flap disc sequence. It does not fix a contaminated grain. Professional stainless discs are sold as iron-free, or INOX, so they are not loaded with the abrasive that has been cutting carbon steel. Iron left in the scratch pattern rusts later, even when the stainless itself is sound. A disc that has touched mild steel, or a pack you cannot show is free of iron, stays off cosmetic stainless. We do not have a chemical assay of these seven cartons. We have the words on the amazon.co.uk pages.

What these listings actually say

Merryland’s three packs name metal, iron, stainless steel and steel. They are zirconium or zirconia, Type 29, 12,250 rpm, at £12.90 for ten or £21.90 for twenty of the 40 grit. The reviews describe mild-steel jobs: a rusty car beam, paint, welds, a Bosch grinder. None confirms an iron-free cut. GZKTY at £18.99 names metal, stainless steel and wood, in zirconia Type 29, 4.6 from 119 reviews, with no maximum rpm in the extract. Wood beside stainless is a general-purpose carton. Flintronic at £12.99 names stainless, cast iron, sheet and wood, in Type 27 aluminium oxide at 13,300 rpm, and the title prints a 22 mm bore. Cast iron on the same abrasive is the opposite of a dedicated INOX disc. MIDO at £24.99 and Gmozkrn at £12.99 do not name stainless. Their materials lines are metal and wood. Dropping them for a missing word still leaves you short of an iron-free disc. On stainless sheet, 40 grit leaves a scratch that is slow to refine. The 125mm flap disc buying guide separates that grit choice from the profile.

Keeping carbon steel off the same disc

Use one disc, or one marked sleeve, for stainless, and another for mild steel, even inside a mixed pack. The moment a 40 grit flap has skimmed a carbon-steel weld, it is retired from the stainless cover. Shared wire brushes and shared grinding dust do the same transfer. If the part is structural, food-contact, or a weld you are not qualified to dress, a fabricator takes over. A small non-structural spatter mark can follow the guard, speed and angle rules. A tank, a handrail, or a specified finish is past a £12.90 general pack. None of these listings says iron-free or INOX in the fields we extracted. DeWalt and other trade discs use that wording on other SKUs. Those SKUs are not in this seven, and we are not borrowing their claims. Until a listing says the abrasive is free of iron, treat stainless as a material the seller hopes you will try.

Which pack to open, and which to leave shut

If the job is mild steel and the title merely mentions stainless, ignore the word and buy on grit, rpm and reviews. That is the Merryland 40 grit 10-pack at £12.90 for welds, or the 80 grit 10-pack when you are blending, as on the best 125mm flap disc page. If the job is real stainless and a stain later would annoy you, leave all seven shut and buy a disc whose own label says iron-free, in 125 mm, with a speed your grinder may run. If you accept the risk on a hidden bracket, the Merryland 80 grit is the less brutal scratch, the speed is printed, and that disc stays off carbon steel afterwards. Flintronic’s cast-iron wording makes it a weak stainless candidate. GZKTY leaves rpm off the listing. MIDO prints 12,200 rpm and never claims stainless. Gmozkrn has four reviews and a title about unmarked grits. For a visible stainless weld, none of those gaps is the disc to learn on.

Common questions

Can I use a normal flap disc on stainless steel?
You can cut stainless with an ordinary flap disc and also leave iron in the scratches. These seven listings do not say the grain is iron-free. For a visible face, buy a disc that states it and keep it off carbon steel.
Which packs here mention stainless?
Merryland’s three packs, GZKTY and Flintronic name stainless steel. MIDO and Gmozkrn list metal and wood. Naming the metal is not an INOX or iron-free claim.
Is zirconia better than aluminium oxide on stainless?
Zirconia is the harder grain Merryland, GZKTY and MIDO list, and it still needs to be iron-free if contamination matters. Flintronic’s aluminium oxide also names cast iron. Grain type does not replace that line.
What grit should I use on stainless sheet?
Use 40 grit only where a weld is still proud, then 80 and 120 while the steel is cool. Keep pressure light so the sheet does not blue. Separate mixed grits first, because some Amazon fields show only one number.
Can I use the same disc on mild steel and then on stainless?
No, if the stainless has to stay clean. Carbon steel on the flaps transfers. Mark one disc for stainless, and keep brushes and grinding dust off that face as well.
Do any of these seven say INOX or iron-free?
Not in the titles and specification fields extracted here. Some say stainless beside iron, wood or cast iron. The iron-free wording has to be on the listing you buy.
