How to use a cordless orbital sander

Updated: October 2026

You have the sander out of the box, a painted door on two trestles and a free afternoon. Knowing how to use a cordless orbital sander comes down to four habits: fit the disc properly, work through the grits in order, let the pad orbit without leaning on it, and stop when the battery, the paint or the dust says the job has outgrown you. This page walks through those steps for a 125 mm random-orbital palm sander. It does not rank models. The [cordless orbital sander comparison](/hub/sanders/cordless-orbital-sander) does that. Fit the disc to the pad you were sold

A disc that is not held firmly will skid, burn or fly off. Most 125 mm cordless sanders use hook-and-loop. Line up the holes, then press from the centre outwards so the disc sits flat. The holes are how dust leaves the work. Hook-and-loop is stated for the DeWalt DCW210N-XJ, the GEARLASSO and both Normodic bodies. It is not named for the INGCO, the BLUEMARS, either DEKOPRO listing or the TALOEYH. Match the diameter and the hole pattern. DEKOPRO reviewers describe pad screws that shear and discs that fly off. If a disc lifts at the edge, stop and check the pad. Dust at the pad is on the dust extraction page.

Move through the grits in order

A low grit number removes material and leaves deep scratches. Each higher number removes the scratches from the grade before. A fine disc cannot reach the bottom of those scratches, so they show under paint or oil. The BLUEMARS bullets list 60, 80, 120, 180 and 240. The Normodic NR18 lists four each of P60 to P240, and the other Normodic lists five of each. The INGCO and DEKOPRO kits include sandpaper without listing the grades. GEARLASSO does not list sandpaper. One BLUEMARS attribute says grit 36, which does not match its disc list. On a painted door, start coarse enough to cut the paint, then step up, such as 80, then 120, then 180, before primer. On bare wood that only needs keying, start higher. Wipe or vacuum between grades. That sequence is a method, not a measured result.

Keep the pad moving and do not stall the orbit

If you press down hard, the orbit stalls, the pad drags, and you get swirl marks. Pressing harder also drains the battery and heats the disc. Let the weight of the tool and a light hand do the work. Start with the pad flat, and keep it flat. Tilting one edge gouges the wood, especially on a veneered door. Move in overlapping passes, roughly along the grain, and keep the tool moving. If you have variable speed, start lower on a new surface and on edges. Reviewers of one BLUEMARS said it only spins. DeWalt reviewers say a 5 Ah pack tips backwards.

When the battery or the paint means you stop

Reviewers describe about 10 to 20 minutes on the DEKOPRO kits, about 15 minutes or less on the INGCO 2.0 Ah pack, and about 10 minutes on a 1.5 Ah DeWalt pack. Those are review comments, not measured runtimes. A whole door may take more than one charge. If you suspect lead paint on an old door, skirting or window, stop and get professional advice. Sanding lead paint releases hazardous dust. If a battery smokes, as one DEKOPRO reviewer reports, stop and do not charge it again. Recycle lithium packs at a collection point. Call a professional for paid hardwood or MDF work without extraction and a suitable mask, and for a floor, which a 125 mm palm sander will not finish well. Common questions

How do I fit a sanding disc to a cordless orbital sander?
On a hook-and-loop pad, line up the holes in the disc with the holes in the pad, then press the disc on firmly from the centre outwards. No tool is needed. Check that the disc diameter and hole pattern match your pad, usually 125 mm. If the disc lifts or flies off after a few minutes, the hook face may be worn, and the pad needs checking or replacing.
What grit should I start with on a painted door?
Start coarse enough to cut through the paint, then move up one grade at a time. With a typical disc set of 60, 80, 120, 180 and 240, many people start at 80 on paint and finish at 180 before primer. That is a method, not a tested result. Do not skip grades, because the deep scratches from a coarse disc show through paint.
Why does my random-orbital sander leave swirl marks?
The most common cause is pressing too hard, which stalls the orbit so the pad drags in circles. Skipping grits, sanding with the pad tilted, or a clogged disc can also leave marks. Use light pressure, keep the pad flat and moving, step through the grits in order, and wipe the dust away between grades. If the tool only spins and never orbits, it may not be a true random-orbital sander.
How long does a cordless orbital sander battery last?
It depends on the pack size and how hard you work. Reviewers of the budget kits in this set describe about 10 to 20 minutes from a 2.0 Ah pack, and one DeWalt reviewer reports about 10 minutes on a 1.5 Ah pack. These are review comments, not measured figures. A larger pack runs longer but adds weight, so a spare pack is often more practical.
When should I stop sanding and call a professional?
Stop if you suspect lead paint, which is common on older doors and windows, because sanding releases hazardous dust. Stop if a battery smokes, and do not charge it again. Bring in a professional for paid hardwood or MDF work without extraction and a suitable mask, and for a floor, which a 125 mm palm sander will not finish evenly.
Can I use a cordless orbital sander without dust extraction?
You can, but the dust bag on most cordless sanders catches only part of the dust, and reviewers of several models in this set say it catches little. For MDF, hardwood or long sessions, connect an extractor where the tool allows it and wear a suitable mask. Do not sweep the dust up afterwards, because sweeping throws the finest dust back into the air.
