Key safe buying guide

Updated: October 2026

Amazon.co.uk mixes three products under key safe: a wall box a carer can reach, a lockout dial, and an indoor cupboard of hooks. Name the job before you sort by stars. Our [key safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/key-safe) holds twelve prices, from £7.48 to £128.95. This page does not rank them. The order is the job, then accreditation if the key opens a home, then the wall and the hands, then the price. Compiled on 16 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk extracts and public UK guidance. No attack test was run. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three jobs, not one key safe

A front-door spare, a lockout key, and tagged hooks are three products. Councils use key safe for an outside wall box. If you buy an indoor cabinet for care, the carer is still outside. Care-shaped boxes in this batch: KeySafe C500 Pro at £67.96, KeySafe P500 Pro at £93.95, ark Tamo at £128.95. Lockout dials at about £7 to £15: Mitoymia H001 £7.48, Double Dragon £7.49, GRIFEMA GA1003-1 £10.49, Master Lock 5401EURD £14.99. No accreditation on the listing at mid price: OFFOF £23.23, ARK GUARD PRO XL Mk2 £24.95, Mohard £25.99. Indoors: Uniclife £29.99 and KornerBatl £60.99. The named top pick is on the best key safe page.

Accreditation if the key opens a home

If the key opens a home, read the accreditation field, not a slogan in the title. The ark Tamo listing prints neither A5 nor A10, and maker pages disagree, so this guide states neither code. The C500 listing shows Secured by Design. The datasheet cites Issue 8 A5 and certificate 1062g. The P500 listing prints both lines, plus an anti-tamper plate. A maker note says this Pro is A5 and an earlier P500 was A3. Do not import an A1 certificate number.

Wall, hands, then price

The C500 and P500 line is brick or concrete and the supplied screws. Render, pebbledash, cladding, and a plug you added leave it behind. Hole size and tenancy are on how to fit a key safe. Large buttons beat tiny dials in gloves or poor light, and a mechanical lock needs no battery. Price comes after you have told the insurer.

What to tell the insurer

Tell the insurer before you rely on a box. Say a carer will hold a code, ask whether a claim needs signs of forced entry, and write down the answer. If they want Secured by Design, stay with a listing that shows it and a wall that matches the test. If they refuse key safes, a higher star count will not fix that.

Common questions

What should you check first on a key safe?
Check the job. A care spare, a lockout spare, and an indoor cupboard of labelled keys are three products that share a search term. Accreditation comes next only if the key opens a home. The wall and the person who will press the buttons come after that. Price is the last sort, once you have told the insurer what you are fitting.
Does Secured by Design mean the police tested it?
Secured by Design is the police scheme, often called Police Preferred Specification. The police do not run the laboratory attack test themselves. The rating quoted for these boxes is LPS 1175, which pairs a tool category with a time. A logo on a listing is the scheme. A slogan in a title is not the logo.
What does LPS 1175 Issue 8 A5 mean in plain language?
A5 means Category A tools, used by one person, with tools up to 2.5 kg, for at least five minutes. It describes that test on the product as it was fixed. It does not travel with you onto render, into mortar, or onto screws you substituted. In this batch the C500 datasheet cites Issue 8 A5 and certificate 1062g. The P500 listing prints Issue 8 A5 on the Amazon page.
Is a £7 to £15 dial box the same product as a C500?
No. The Master Lock 5401EURD at £14.99 has 4.6 from 27,113 reviews and no accreditation on the listing. The C500 Pro at £67.96 shows Secured by Design, and the datasheet states the A5 line for brick or concrete and the supplied screws. The dial can be a sensible lockout spare. It is a different job from a care key.
Does police approved in an Amazon title count?
It does not count as the logo. The Mitoymia title says Approved and names no body. The GRIFEMA title says police approved, and the specification lines do not show Secured by Design or LPS. The ark Tamo title says police preferred, and that Amazon listing prints neither A5 nor A10. Read the accreditation field, not the adjective.
Will a key safe leave a home-insurance claim untouched?
Not automatically. MoneySuperMarket and Lichfield say a theft claim can fail when a key from a box was used and there is no damage. That is not a blanket void, and it is not a reason to call a box insurance-approved. Ask your insurer, and keep BS 3621 as a question about the door lock, not about the box.
When is an indoor key cabinet the right buy instead of an outdoor box?
Buy the cabinet when the keys stay inside and people need hooks and tags. The Uniclife at £29.99 is a 16-hook steel cupboard. The KornerBatl at £60.99 is an electronic cabinet for up to 65 keys, and it needs batteries. Neither is described as an outdoor carer box. If the carer is outside, you are back to a wall box.
