Wild garlic seeds

Updated: October 2026

You ordered garlic to plant and the envelope holds pin-head seed, or you wanted ramsons in a shady corner and the wait needs explaining. Wild garlic seeds in the UK are Allium ursinum, a woodland perennial. They are not a Solent Wight clove, and a bare pot in spring is not proof the seed was dead. The [plant garlic comparison](/hub/root-vegetables/plant-garlic) includes two seed packets beside the culinary bulbs. The Products Compared editorial team used those amazon.co.uk listings, the RHS page for Allium ursinum, and Chiltern Seeds’ sowing range. We did not germinate a batch. Not the bulb you plant in autumn

Culinary garlic, Allium sativum, is the clove you plant in autumn for a bulb the next summer. Ramsons is grown for the leaves, in shade and moist, humus-rich soil, and it spreads by seed and bulbils. The RHS describes a British native that will take over ground you might have wanted to keep tidy. If you want bulbs for the kitchen, use the buying guide or the best seed garlic page. Provence Wight at £8.49 is that job. The mix-up is easy because both plants are called garlic. Just Seed reviewers who wanted cloves say they received pin-head seed. That is the correct product and the wrong expectation. You wait for leaves, not a first-year bulb. A bed you turn every winter is the wrong room for a plant the RHS says will spread.

The two packets

Just Seed is about 100 seeds at £3.25, with 4.0 stars from 815 reviews. The seller specifies partial shade, woodland, and shaded borders, and the care line says sow in winter. The attribute says Non Organic, and the indoor line says Outdoor, with no windowsill method. Some reviewers saw nothing come up. That sits beside a germination window of many months. The Nika packet at £2.99 is cheaper and thinner. The title says 120 seeds. The number-of-items field says 300. The seller says the seeds go out in a labelled ziplock with no sowing instructions, and one reviewer says the pouch had no information. The rating is 3.4 from 13 reviews. The bullet says damp, shady places and about 25 cm tall. You lose a winter-sowing line and a large review sample.

Why the seed sits there

The sources give a range, not a fortnight. Chiltern says you can direct-sow at about 20 mm, or give about 18–22°C and then cold at about −4 to 4°C, with germination from 18 days to 12 months. The RHS seed-scheme table, for Allium as a genus, allows up to a year, kept cold, moist, and dark. An RHS Plants note says sow up to 2 cm deep, or use a warm spell and then a cold frame. Just Seed’s care line is the short version: sow in winter. If you follow Chiltern’s range, a pot still bare at six weeks is inside the window. A pot bare at fourteen months is beyond it. Keep the compost moist once the cold stage starts. Drying out is a common way to lose a stratification you thought you had finished. The Nika line “damp, shady places” matches that, without temperatures. Just Seed at least points at winter. Neither listing promises a bulb in year one, and neither replaces the clove calendar.

Shade, spread, and pets

Sow where the soil stays moist and humus-rich, in partial or deeper shade. Full sun on a patio, which suits Solent Wight, is the wrong site. An RHS Plants note gives about 15–30 cm once you are setting plants, and it records that the plant spreads. The edge of a vegetable bed is a poor one, because seed and bulbils end up in compost you turn each year. Height on the Nika listing is about 25 cm. Chiltern’s note is about 30 cm. Those are leaf heights. The RHS Plants page says Allium ursinum is toxic to pets if eaten. That matters if a dog grazes the bed. If a pet has eaten a quantity, you want a vet. Ramsons leaves smell of garlic when crushed. That smell is a check, not proof that every allium leaf in the hedge is edible.

Common questions

Are wild garlic seeds the same as garlic cloves?
No. These packets are seed of ramsons, Allium ursinum. A clove for autumn planting is Allium sativum. You will not lift a Solent-style bulb from this packet next summer.
Why have the seeds not come up?
Chiltern Seeds gives 18 days to 12 months after warmth and then cold. A bare pot in spring can still be inside that window. Dry compost or a warm room all winter is a reason to fail. A wait of a few weeks is not, on its own, a dead packet.
Do ramsons need sun or shade?
They need partial shade or shade, and soil that stays moist. Just Seed says woodland and shaded borders. The Nika bullet says damp, shady places. Full sun and a dry raised bed are the conditions to avoid.
How many seeds are in the cheaper packet?
The Nika title says 120 seeds and the items field says 300. The listing does not settle the clash, and the seller says the pouch has no sowing instructions. The cheaper packet saves a little and leaves you without an agreed count or a winter-sowing line.
Will ramsons take over the bed?
It can. The RHS says Allium ursinum spreads by seed and by bulbils. That is welcome in a wild corner and a problem in a bed you cultivate. Keep it out of a tidy vegetable row. Do not start it by stripping a wild patch.
Can you grow it indoors?
The Just Seed attribute says Outdoor, and the bullets give no indoor method. A heated room works against the cold stage. A sunny kitchen windowsill is the wrong place for both the cold spell and the shade the adult plant wants.
