Clay or plastic drainage pipe when you open an old trench

Updated: October 2026

You have dug down to salt-glaze or clay and you need a few more metres. Clay or plastic drainage pipe is a match to the pipe you found, not a general contest. Plastic will not push into a clay socket, and dug clay is a poor bed for PVC-U. This page is that joint and that bedding. The [underground drainage pipe comparison](/hub/rods-and-pipes/underground-drainage-pipe) sells neither clay nor a clay adaptor. The Products Compared editorial team used Approved Document H and UK adaptor notes current on 16 October 2026. None of the kept listings is the coupler.

What each material is asking the trench to do

Table 7 lists both materials for a foul drain: vitrified clay to BS EN 295, and PVC-U to BS EN 1401 with UD normally specified. The document does not ban either. On an extension you match what you found, or you cross with an adaptor. You do not force the newer material into the old socket. Clay is rigid. The Clay Pipe Development Association says a clay pipe can use little bedding because the wall carries the load. Plastic has little ring strength until granular material supports the sides. Packing dug clay around a new plastic barrel can oval it. Table 8 for clay of Class 120 prints a minimum of 0.6 m in fields and 1.2 m under roads. Table 10 for SN4 thermoplastic pipe on Class S2 bedding prints 0.6 m to 7 m in fields and 0.9 m under roads, for 100 mm to 300 mm. A plastic pipe under a drive is not the same as the old clay at 0.6 m. The fall does not change with the material.

The coupler, after you measure

Measure the outside of both pipes. Nominal 100 mm and the words “4 inch” hide different walls. Speedy Plastics describes a 4 inch clay-to-PVC connector for clay of about 132 mm to 142 mm outside and PVC of about 105 mm to 114 mm. That window is one maker’s. Kalsi describes a rubber coupling with steel clamps, or a purpose-made clay-to-PVC adaptor. There is no universal jaw size. Wickes’s drainage PDF separates thin-wall vitrified clay, made since about 1984, from older thick-wall clay. Their connector 430-042 is described for about 121 mm to 136 mm outside. Their 432-046 is a different push-fit for thick wall. Those codes are Wickes codes, not British Standards. If your measurement misses both windows, ask the merchant for the band that contains it. Cut the old pipe square, clean back to sound clay, and seat the adaptor on the plain barrel, not on a collar. Solvent cement does nothing useful on clay. A public sewer still wants at least three weeks’ notice under paragraph 2.5.

What this comparison does not sell

The three amazon.co.uk listings are not clay and they are not clay-to-plastic adaptors. B0GFX8F17F is a 1 m black solvent-weld waste pipe at £19.99. That is a cemented waste joint, not the plastic half of a clay coupler. B0DDKX2P23 is a flexible downpipe at £12.99, with a fit complaint against 68 mm. B0BTGNVMMQ is a catch-basin kit at £20.99 whose pipe stops at 5.1 feet. None is BS EN 295. Buy the adaptor against the outside diameters you wrote down, and buy 110 mm ring-seal underground pipe if plastic continues the run. Match clay with clay when the bed is already clay. Cross to plastic when the adaptor fits the outsides you measured and the new barrel gets a granular surround.

Common questions

Should I match the old pipe?
Match it when you can get the same material and a coupling for the outside diameter you measured. Clay to clay keeps a rigid pipe on the bedding it often already has. Plastic to plastic keeps one granular surround. Cross only with an adaptor sized to both barrels.
What standard is clay, and what standard is plastic?
Table 7 names vitrified clay to BS EN 295 and PVC-U to BS EN 1401, with UD normally specified. Structured-wall plastic is BS EN 13476. Both are allowed. The new barrel should carry one of those, not a solvent-weld waste description.
Will 110 mm plastic fit inside clay?
A plastic spigot is about 110 mm outside. Old clay is larger outside and is not machined as a socket for that spigot. Speedy Plastics’ connector is sized for clay at about 132 mm to 142 mm outside and PVC at about 105 mm to 114 mm. You need an adaptor or a clamped coupling in the right band. A bare push fit is a broken socket or a leak.
What outside diameter should I measure?
Measure the plain barrel, not the collar. Write down clay and plastic in millimetres. Wickes describes thin-wall clay since about 1984 at about 121 mm to 136 mm outside for connector 430-042. Thick-wall clay from before that uses 432-046. If your number misses the band, ask for another fitting. Do not file the pipe to suit.
Does plastic need more bedding than clay?
Clay can bear with little surround because the wall is rigid. PVC-U needs granular material beside and under the barrel so the pipe stays round. Reusing dug clay as the bed is a common way to oval a new plastic length even after the adaptor was right.
Is black solvent-weld pipe the plastic to use?
The 1 m eco-filtration pipe in this comparison is solvent-weld waste. It is not sold as BS EN 1401 ring-seal pipe, and it will not make a clay joint because both look roughly 4 inch. Use ring-seal underground plastic on the adaptor’s PVC side.
Do I need building control for the new joint?
Kalsi says to tell building control before you backfill a new connection. A public sewer also needs at least three weeks’ notice under paragraph 2.5. A like-for-like repair on a private pipe you can identify is smaller, and a photograph of the adaptor is still worth taking. If you cannot tell whose pipe it is, stop.
