Hi-vis work trousers

Updated: 17 October 2026

You have been told to wear hi-vis work trousers, or you are looking at a jogger whose title already says hi-vis. The class is a pair of areas on a label, not the word in the title. In the [work trousers comparison](/hub/protective-clothing/work-trousers), one row is a hi-vis jogger and the others do not state a hi-vis claim. None of the extracts print EN ISO 20471 or RIS-3279-TOM. If the site names a class or a rail colour, buy the garment that prints it. The areas follow EN ISO 20471 as EU-OSHA and HSE describe them. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The class is an area, not a colour word

EN ISO 20471 classes are minimum areas of fluorescent material and of retroreflective material. Class 1 is 0.14 square metres fluorescent and 0.10 square metres retroreflective. Class 2 is 0.50 and 0.13. Class 3 is 0.80 and 0.20. HSE’s L25 guidance describes most trousers as class 1 and some as class 2, and it puts hi-vis inside the PPE regulations when the clothing protects against a specific risk. Ordinary cargo in this set is not that garment. Shop guides that add 19, 25, or 60 mph are not the class definition used here. Use the square metres, then read the label. Some trousers are class 2 on their own. Do not invent class 2 for a listing that prints nothing.

Trousers do not finish class 3 by themselves

Class 3 needs torso coverage as well as the larger areas, so trousers alone do not make class 3. A jacket plus trousers can be a higher class only when both labels say so, and you follow the supplier’s instructions for wearing them together. A class 3 jacket over unmarked cargo is not a class 3 outfit. If the paperwork says class 3, you need the combination the supplier certified. If it says class 2 trousers, you still need that on the label of the pair you buy. The buying guide only routes you here when vehicles or a named class are the job. Knee certification does not raise a visibility class.

Rail orange is not site yellow

RIS-3279-TOM is the UK rail rule, and it is not the same sentence as EN ISO 20471. The line used here, from Sioen’s note and matching UK rail explainers, is fluorescent orange at class 2 areas or above. Yellow high-visibility clothing can meet EN ISO 20471 and still be the wrong colour on the railway, because yellow and green sit near signal colours. Tucking reflective bands into your boots is a wearing fault, not a class upgrade. One reseller says outer rail garments must be class 3. That is stricter than this page. Do not raise the minimum to class 3 unless your site says so. If induction states orange and the garment is yellow, the class number does not repair the colour.

The one hi-vis jogger in this set

Dolce Vari hi-vis work joggers, page ASIN B0CNRVGG75, are £20.99 with 4.2 from 270 reviews. The title says hi-vis and 100% polyester. It does not print EN ISO 20471, a class, or RIS-3279-TOM. One review says the reflective parts begin to fail after a few washes. Another says the pair received was fleece joggers, not the polyester description. Buy Dolce Vari only as ordinary joggers with reflective trim when nobody has named a class or a rail colour. The best work trousers page does not badge this row for brightness, and the size chart page is where the mixed fit belongs.

Common questions

What hi-vis class are work trousers usually?
HSE’s L25 guidance describes most trousers as class 1 and some as class 2. Class 1 is 0.14 square metres fluorescent and 0.10 square metres retroreflective. Class 2 is 0.50 and 0.13. Those are minimum areas under EN ISO 20471. A pair in this set does not become class 1 because the title says hi-vis. You need the class on the garment you buy.
Can trousers alone be class 3?
No. Class 3 is 0.80 square metres fluorescent and 0.20 square metres retroreflective, and it needs torso coverage. Trousers do not supply the torso. A jacket-and-trouser outfit is a higher class only when both labels say so and you wear them as the supplier instructs. Unmarked cargo under a class 3 jacket does not complete it.
What does RIS-3279-TOM add for UK rail?
It requires fluorescent orange, at class 2 areas or above. EN ISO 20471 allows other fluorescent colours, including yellow, once the areas are met. On the railway, yellow stays the wrong colour even at a high class, because yellow and green sit near signal colours. Do not raise the minimum to class 3 unless your site rule says so.
Does the Dolce Vari jogger state a class?
No. The title says hi-vis and 100% polyester. The extract prints no EN ISO 20471 class and no RIS-3279-TOM line. The price is £20.99, with 4.2 from 270 reviews. That star line is not a class. The page ASIN is B0CNRVGG75. Do not copy a standard from a different details-block ASIN onto it.
What did UK reviews say about the tape and the cloth?
One review says the reflective parts begin to fail after a few washes. Another says the pair that arrived was fleece joggers, not the polyester description. Other comments call the cloth stretchy, mention a drawstring, and disagree on size, including one buyer who says to size down. Those reports are not a lab result. The title stays ordinary joggers with a hi-vis word.
What if induction names a class this pair lacks?
Follow the site rule or a competent person, and buy the labelled class and colour. Do not use this jogger as a stand-in, including for a short job or until another parcel arrives. The rest of this comparison does not state a hi-vis claim, so it is not a second choice. Knee-pad pockets, if you also kneel, do not add a visibility class.
