How to use a reciprocating saw

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have one of the cordless saws from this comparison, and the first cut is a pallet, a plastic pipe or a small branch. How to use a reciprocating saw well is mostly the shoe, the blade lock, and when to stop. This page is that first cut for any body in the [Makita reciprocating saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/makita-reciprocating-saw). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk review themes and public UK guidance, not a lab test. Garden limits are on the [pruning](/hub/power-saws/makita-reciprocating-saw/sub/makita-reciprocating-saw-for-pruning) page. Fit the blade with the battery off

Take the pack off before you touch the clamp. A lock-off does not stop the blade if the pack is still on while your fingers are in the collet. Twist the chuck, seat a blade that matches the material, and tug it. If it slides out, it was not locked. UK reviews say the first twist can be stiff. Teeth usually point back towards the shoe, because the blade cuts on the pull. Around 6 TPI is the wood choice and 14 to 24 TPI is the metal choice. CMT’s UK range uses that split. The JR105DZ hex key sits on the base above the battery slide, which is why reviewers miss it.

Plant the shoe and start the cut

Press the shoe against the work before the teeth take a full bite. If the nose is in the air, the blade chatters and a thin blade can snap. Stand to the side of the blade and use two hands unless the piece is clamped. Clamp the work so the kerf cannot close. On sheet, keep at least two teeth in the cut. Draper’s guidance also says not to drive a moving blade into the far wall of a hollow pipe. A Fledukten review says the shoe is fixed, so you choose blade length. OHAISFELA claims an adjustable shoe and WORKPRO a pivoting shoe. If yours does not slide, change the blade. The buying guide is where you choose the saw.

Match the trigger to the material

A UK review of the £46.59 luolety says it whines and does not move the blade if the trigger is too slow. For wood, get the blade moving once the shoe is down. For thin metal, use a slower speed and a fine blade. Forcing a wood blade through pipe heats the cut. The £49.99 JOJOCY page has UK reports of smoke within an hour. Roadtime has smoke on a bulky first cut. If you smell insulation or see smoke, stop and take the pack off. If a cut that was going well suddenly slows, change the blade before you blame the motor. The JR105DZ review that died in about 10 minutes was metal cutting on a small CXT pack. A larger pack helps runtime. It does not turn a 13 mm stroke into a demolition saw.

Stop before the job or the tool gets away from you

Wear eye protection on every cut, and hearing protection if you would have to shout. HSE’s noise action values are 80 and 85 dB(A). Makita’s 95 dB(A) sound power is the DJR187’s figure, not a copy’s. Ordinary gloves are not a vibration control. HSE’s daily values are 2.5 and 5 m/s² A(8), and these listings publish no magnitude. If your fingers tingle, stop. The top-pick page chooses a listing. Stop for structural timber, hidden services, and suspect pre-2000 boards that might contain asbestos. Pack the saw away only after the blade has stopped and the battery is off.

Common questions

Do I take the battery off to change the blade?
Yes. Remove the pack, twist the collet, and tug the new blade before the pack goes back on. A lock-off is a start control, not a safe state while your fingers are at the clamp. A stiff twist with the battery fitted is how a saw starts in your hand.
Which way do the teeth face, and how do I know it has locked?
Point the teeth back toward the shoe, so the blade cuts on the pull. If the cut chatters and will not track, check that before you blame the motor. The lock is a tug. If the blade slides out, seat it again.
Why must the shoe touch the work?
The shoe is the reaction point. Planted, the blade strokes into the material. Held off, it chatters and can snap. Clamp or support the offcut as well, or the kerf closes and the saw kicks. A fixed shoe means you pick blade length rather than sliding the nose.
Why does a slow trigger whine without moving the blade?
The motor is turning too slowly to drive the teeth, so you hear a whine and feel a judder. A UK luolety review describes that when the trigger is too gentle. Start the stroke once the shoe is down, then reduce speed for metal with a fine blade.
What should I wear, and when is vibration a work issue?
Wear eye protection every time, and hearing protection when you would have to shout. Do not treat ordinary gloves as vibration protection. At home, tingling fingers are a reason to stop. At work, HSE’s 2.5 and 5 m/s² A(8) values apply, and these listings publish no magnitude you could use.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop for structural timber, unknown services, suspect pre-2000 boards, and any saw that has smoked. A hollow pipe the blade might hit on the far side is a stop. A professional should take gas, electrics and anything that carries load.
