Fiskars pruning saw: which shape to buy

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already know the orange handle, and amazon.co.uk is offering a bow saw, a curved pruning saw and a folding pull saw, several of them with a battery or corded row on a tool you work by hand. A Fiskars pruning saw, in this set, is the handled blade for branches you can reach from the ground. The bow saw is a different cut, and the folder is a third. This page is the order of those decisions, not a ranking of eight names. Prices and stars sit on the [Fiskars saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/fiskars-saw). Peter F. read the amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

These are hand saws

Start with the title, then the bullets, then any power row that agrees with them. If the title says bow saw, pruning saw or pull saw, a line that says battery, corded, brushless, 28 V or 4,500 rpm is listing noise. The SW31 file is the clearest example: the title is a bow saw for damp wood, and the power row still says battery powered with a 4,500 rpm figure. The PowerTooth D-handle, model 393440, is the file whose power row already says hand powered, which is what the title implies. The Xtract SW75 and UPX or QuikFit heads are not kept ASINs here. A head is not a complete saw.

Three shapes, three jobs

The first split is the cut, not the star rating. A log or small trunk you can support points to the SW31, article 1000615, at £20.35 and 595 g, with 625 mm in the bullets and 24 inches on the blade row. UK reviewers used it on logs and apple wood. The frame gets in the way of a flush cut. If you are still choosing between that frame and an open blade, the contrast is bow saw vs pruning saw. A branch, a hedge or a bush you can reach from the ground points to a handled pruning saw. The SW-240 bullets say fresh wood, a pulling cut and a case. Model 393440-1001 says the blade cuts on the pull and the push. Model 393440 says hand powered and thick branches, and does not state the stroke. Do not merge those two model numbers because the digits look alike. A saw that must live in a toolbox points to the Pro folding pull saw, article 1062933, at £42: 25 cm, 13 TPI, a lock, and a flexible blade for softwood, squared timber and PVC, not fresh green branches. Which name inside the family is the best Fiskars garden saw page.

Stroke, length and a guard

Match the stroke to the saw in your hand. The SW-240 is a pulling cut, and a review says not to load the return. Model 393440-1001 says pull and push. The SW31 bullets do not name a stroke, while UK trade pages say that bow cuts both ways. The amazon.co.uk file mentions a guard in a highlight, not in the box field. Check the live page if you need the guard. Length is the next limit. A 24 cm contents line on the SW-240, against a 22 cm row, is still a short blade and the wrong tool for a trunk. A 24 inch bow belongs on a supported log. One UK reviewer bent that blade on a thick laurel trunk. A case counts only when the box field says so. The SW-240 includes one. The folder's spare, article 1062943, is sold separately.

What the listing may not support

Several pages print a figure that cannot describe the saw. Model 393440-1001 lists 23.8 g, which is not a usable weight. The SW37 at £28.51 has no bullets, no review line and a 1 cm blade row. The 680 mm D-handle at £32.47 prints 10 mm dimensions, a box field that says false, and 5.0 from three reviews about packing, not the cut. The PowerTooth D-handle at £54.09 is hand powered, which is useful, and then the included-components field says tree pruner. The title is a 15 inch saw. Do not assume a sheath, a pole or a second tool is in the box. If the page is too thin to tell you stroke and length, the lower price is not the bargain.

When the saw is the wrong tool

These are ground tools for wood you can reach without standing under the branch. The Health and Safety Executive's arboriculture guidance is to cut low branches from the ground. A chainsaw certificate is not a licence to use any of these saws from a ladder. If the cut is above you, near an overhead line, or on a stem you cannot support, stop. A professional is the next step, not a longer blade. Nests and tree orders are on the Fiskars saw for green wood page.

Common questions

Is a Fiskars saw electric?
No. In this comparison the titles are a bow saw, pruning saws or a folding pull saw. Several amazon.co.uk rows still say battery, corded, 28 V or 4,500 rpm. Treat those rows as listing noise when the title is a hand tool. The PowerTooth D-handle, model 393440, is the file whose power row already says hand powered. You do not look for a charger for the SW31.
Should I buy a bow saw, a pruning saw or a folding saw?
Buy the bow saw when the wood is a log or a small trunk you can support. Buy a handled pruning saw when the branch is still on a tree or shrub you can reach from the ground. Buy the 13 TPI folder when you want covered teeth for softwood, squared timber or PVC. The frame of a bow saw is the wrong shape for a tight fork, and a 24 cm pruning blade is the wrong length for a trunk.
Does the SW31 include a blade guard?
The item highlight mentions a blade guard. The included-components field lists the 24 inch SW31 and does not list a guard as a separate part. UK trade pages describe a plastic protector. That shop copy is not the same as the amazon.co.uk box field. Check the live listing and the parcel if a guard is the reason you are choosing this model.
Will the 13 TPI folder cut green branches?
The bullets do not claim that. They name softwood, squared timber, PVC and everyday cuts, with a flexible blade and a lock. Reviews in the file, which are not UK texts, say the blade twists if you force it, and one reviewer says the thin blade is a poor match for fresh wood. For live branches, start with a saw whose bullets say fresh wood or thick branches.
When do I stop and hire someone?
Stop when your feet leave firm ground, when you would stand under the branch, or when the wood is near an overhead line. Stop for felling that is not clearly lopping or a garden exception you can prove, and for a protected tree that needs consent. A hand saw does not make a large or awkward tree into a DIY job. The green-wood page sets out the licence, the tree preservation order and the nest check.
