How to mount a wall fan

Updated: October 2026

You already have a fan, or you are about to drill, and the head is heavier than the plasterboard looks. This is how to mount a wall fan from the weights and the box lines in this amazon.co.uk set, not a screw-size recipe the listings never gave. The lightest kept fan is the ZOIZ at 671 g. The heaviest is the AVUXOR at 9.2 kg. A thin plate and a short lead are the two failures UK reviews actually describe. The [wall fan comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/wall-fan) is the table. The Products Compared editorial team used those listings and public UK guidance. We did not test fixings in a wall. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Weight before the wall

Plasterboard alone is a poor fixing once the head is a few kilograms, and it is a worse one at 7 kg. The light group is the ZOIZ at 671 g, the Lemoistar at 1.01 kg, and the Honeywell at 1.18 kg. The 16 inch fans step up from Swiftair at 1.9 kg to Senelux at 3.75 kg. The workspace heads are RAM 18 inch 7 kg, Air Pro 7 kg, and AVUXOR 9.2 kg. No listing states a plasterboard anchor rating. If the board has no stud or masonry behind the bracket, do not hang the RAM 18 inch, the Air Pro, or the AVUXOR. Which of those heavy heads to buy is the garage wall fan page.

What the bracket lines actually say

The Swiftair box line lists a mounting bracket, hardware, a wire mesh cover, and a manual. One UK review calls the hanging plate thin pressed metal, with one small screw. That 1.9 kg head still has to land in something solid. Staycool reviews report a missing guard nut and a missing oscillation piece. Stop before you drill, and do not run the fan with the cage open. RAM 16 inch reviews say the supplied wall plugs feel too weak. Senelux reviews say the screw holes sit behind the cables. Honeywell lists a cord and no bracket. Which head to buy stays on the wall fan buying guide and best wall fan UK.

Lead, tilt, and guard

UK reviews often call the lead too short, and the socket is fixed by where you drill. One Senelux review puts the cable at about a metre. The Lemoistar title states 177.8 cm. Hold the fan at the height you want before you drill. If the lead will not reach, move the hole or do not mount it. Staycool and Senelux reviews say the head does not tilt down far enough once it is high. Set the aim before you mark the wall. A missing guard nut means you stop and use the Consumer Rights Act 2015 returns route. Do not run an open cage.

Bathroom, smoke, and an electrician

None of these ten listings states an IP code. The AVUXOR special features include waterproof, and the indoor field still says indoor. That is not a reason to put the fan beside a bath. Approved Document F, for England, wants extract to the outside. Table 1.1 puts intermittent bathroom extract at 15 litres per second. These fans move air in the room. The Health and Safety Executive says a fan does not add fresh air. A burning smell, a pop and fire, or a fuse that blows means unplug and return. If the wall cannot hold the weight, leave the hole undrilled.

Common questions

Can I hang this on plasterboard alone?
Not if the head is one of the heavier rows and the board has nothing solid behind it. The RAM 18 inch and the Air Pro are 7 kg, and the AVUXOR is 9.2 kg. Even the Swiftair at 1.9 kg has a UK review calling the plate thin, with one small screw. No listing gives an anchor rating. Fix into a stud or solid masonry that can hold the stated weight, or do not mount it.
How heavy are the fans in this set?
The light fans are about 0.7–1.2 kg. Swiftair is 1.9 kg and Staycool is 2.1 kg, and the 16 inch group runs up to Senelux at 3.75 kg. RAM 18 inch, Air Pro, and AVUXOR are 7–9.2 kg. Treat those three as a wall that must be solid.
What if the lead does not reach a socket?
Most listings do not state a lead length. Staycool reviews call the lead too short, one Senelux review says about a metre, and the Lemoistar title says 177.8 cm. Hold the fan at the height you want before you drill. If the lead will not reach without strain, move the bracket closer to the socket or return the fan. Do not stretch a cord across a walkway.
What if a guard nut is missing?
Stop. Staycool reviews include a missing guard nut and a missing oscillation piece. Do not run the fan with the cage open. That is a return under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a weekend spare-parts job. The same applies if the fan smells of burning when you first plug it in: unplug it and send it back.
Can I use one of these in a bathroom?
No. None of the ten states an IP code, and a recirculating fan does not extract to the outside. Approved Document F’s intermittent bathroom figure is 15 litres per second to outside air. Waterproof on the AVUXOR, with an indoor field and no IP code, does not change that. Call an electrician if the job is a bathroom zone.
When do I call an electrician instead of drilling?
Call one for a new circuit, a bathroom zone, or a board that will not reset. Drilling a bracket is your job only when the wall can hold the weight and the plug you already have is the right one. A fan that smokes, pops, or blows every fuse is a return, not a second attempt on another socket.
