How to use a wall fan heater

Updated: October 2026

You have a downflow bar or an over-door fan in the box, and the first questions are where it goes, what the short lead will reach, and why it might stop after a few minutes. This is how to use a wall fan heater without inventing a height the manual does not give, and without hiding a short cable on a coiled reel. Models and prices sit on the [wall fan heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/wall-fan-heater). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Fix it where the manual says

Many UK downflow manuals put the grille at the bottom and the heater high on the wall. Dimplex’s FX20EIPX4 guide, which is not a row in this comparison, says not less than 1,800 mm from the floor to the grille. Hyco’s Zephyr sheet uses the same 1.8 m pattern. Treat 1.8 m as a common figure on those two instructions, not as a rule stamped on every Winterwarm or Eterna. If your sheet differs, follow the sheet in the box. Keep the outlet clear of curtains and towels, and do not dry clothes on the heater. An over-door bar has to clear the door, so a bathroom height can be the wrong sentence.

Connect it without a reel

A UK 3-pin plug and a fused spur are different jobs. The MYLEK MYODH2000 and MYOD5208 state a BS 1363 plug. Reviewers say the lead is about 1.5 m, which is short above a standard door. If the socket is further away, move the plan. Do not bridge the gap with an extension lead, and do not leave a cable reel coiled under load. The Winterwarm WWDF20E has no plug. The listing says 3-core cable with an earth to a fused spur, at 240 V. If you are not competent to make that connection, book an electrician. Both Dreo wall listings carry a 120 V and 1,500 W cell that conflicts with a 2,000 W title. Confirm 220–240 V on the plate before you switch on. If the room has a bath or shower, read the bathroom wall fan heater page before you add a spur.

First run, smell, and a timer

A light smell from a new element is common for a few minutes and should fade. A hot plug, a softening flex, a burning smell that gets worse, or a breaker that trips is a stop, not a burn-off. Isolate it and do not put it back into service until someone competent has looked at it. A runback timer is doing its job when the heat ends. On the Eterna, one review describes a cut-off after about 15 minutes. The Winterwarm listing states a run of about 30 minutes.

When it stops after a few minutes

A heater that runs and then stops is not one diagnosis. Dust in the vents can make a downflow cycle. Futures Housing Group’s help page says to switch off and unplug before you vacuum the vents, and that the thermostat may simply have reached its setpoint. That is a first check, not a reason to open the case. On the MYLEK model 272190, several reviews say the heat stops after about two to four minutes. A failed pull cord is a parts fault, not a timer. Winterwarm reviewers report a snapped lever. Stop using a heater with a damaged cord, a hot plug, or a case that is too hot to touch. If you need heat all night, a bathroom runback is the wrong machine.

Common questions

How high should a downflow heater go?
Use the height in your manual. Dimplex’s FX20EIPX4 guide and Hyco’s Zephyr sheet both use 1,800 mm from the floor as a minimum, with extra clearance to a shelf and to the ceiling on the Dimplex sheet. Those figures belong to those models. If the Winterwarm or Eterna sheet in your box differs, the box wins. Do not invent a compromise height so the lead will reach.
Can I follow a 1.8 m rule for every brand?
No. It is a common pattern on those two UK downflow instructions, not a law for every heater. An over-door cabinet has to clear the door, so a bathroom figure can be the wrong target. The Eterna listing even conflicts with itself: the title says wall and the mounting attribute says floor. If your sheet is missing, do not drill until you have the instructions for that model.
The heater stops after two or three minutes. Is it broken?
Sometimes it is doing what the control is for. A Winterwarm run of about 30 minutes, or an Eterna cut-off around 15 minutes, is a designed stop. A cut-out after two to four minutes, which MYLEK 272190 reviewers report even at a high setpoint, is the complaint to take seriously. Clean the vents only when the heater is off. If it still trips, stop and get it checked.
The cable does not reach the socket. Can I use an extension?
No. Do not solve a short over-door lead with an extension, and do not run a heater from a coiled reel. MYLEK leads in this set are about 1.5 m, which is short above a door, so the socket has to be planned before you drill. Electrical Safety First advises against extension leads for portable heaters. A Winterwarm has no plug, so an extension is not the missing part.
The pull cord has snapped. What now?
Stop using the heater. Winterwarm reviews include failed pull-cord switches and levers, sometimes on a second unit, so this is a known complaint rather than a user error. Do not knot the cord or open the case. Isolate a spur before anyone works on it. Use the seller’s returns route while you are inside your consumer rights window, or a competent repair if the heater is older.
