How to use a propane fan heater

Updated: 16 October 2026

The cylinder is beside the blower, and you want the first light-up to be boring. How to use a propane fan heater is an order: the right regulator, a soapy-water check, then fan, valve and piezo, and gas off before the fan. The sheet in your box overrides this page. The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 16 October 2026 from UK guidance and a typical blower manual. The four heaters on the [gas heater fan comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/gas-heater-fan) do not print that sequence. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If anyone feels ill, or you smell gas you cannot trace, stop and get people out.

Before you open the cylinder

Stand the heater on a stable floor, outdoors or in a space you have accepted as ventilated. Keep the intake and the outlet clear, the hose unkinked, and the cylinder out of the blast. A 37 mbar barbecue regulator does not belong on a 700 mbar or 1,500 mbar blower. The fan needs mains before you open the gas. ALINI states a 230 V UK plug. SIAL states 220 V. The DAHTEC listings do not state volts. Do not leave a lit heater unattended. SIAL says the gas shuts off if power is lost. The other three listings do not, so do not assume it. If the room is still in doubt, including a garage with petrol vapour, read propane heater ventilation before you continue. Matching the regulator is the buying guide.

Connect and leak-check

UK propane cylinders in this class use a POL nut that tightens left-hand. Flogas says you nip it with a spanner, then leak-check. Clockwise often undoes the joint. One 15 kW DAHTEC review found a thread that would not take the hose. One 30–50 kW review’s adaptors would not fit the bottle. If the thread will not start cleanly, stop. Brush soapy water on the joints with gas available and the heater valve still closed. Bubbles mean you shut the cylinder, remake the joint and test again. Never hunt for a leak with a naked flame. Use only the regulator and hose supplied or specified. ALINI states both in the box. SIAL does not list them.

Light and shut down

This order is from the Sealey LP41/LP55 instructions, a UK blower manual, and it is that model’s sequence. It is not printed on the SIAL or DAHTEC listings. Read your sheet first. Sealey’s order is fan on, press the override, click the piezo until it lights, and hold for about 10 seconds so the flame sensor heats. These four listings state piezo ignition. They do not state a 10-second hold. If your sheet names a different count, use the sheet. Shut-down in that Sealey manual is the cylinder first, then about 30 seconds of fan, then the fan off. Do not pull the plug and leave the cylinder open. One SIAL reviewer reported fumes and a headache in a workshop they thought was vented. That means shut the cylinder and get outside.

When it will not stay lit or the bottle ices

If the flame dies as you let go, the usual causes are an empty bottle, air in a new hose, or a sensor that is not hot yet. Repeat your manual’s lighting order. If it still dies, stop. Do not wedge the valve or bypass the sensor. ALINI reviews say the flow cannot be regulated. Several 15 kW DAHTEC reviews say there is no heat control, despite a thermostat line on the listing. If the only setting is full, turn it off. Frost on the bottle means withdrawal is ahead of vaporisation. Use a larger cylinder and let the frosted bottle recover. Do not heat it. A match is not the backup if the piezo fails. Fit a new igniter, or stop.

When to stop and get help

Stop when you smell gas after a remade joint, when a thread is damaged, when the flame will not hold without a bypass, or when anyone gets a headache. Shut the cylinder, ventilate from a place you can breathe, and do not retry that evening. The National Gas Helpline is 0800 111 999. If you are still choosing which unit to light, the conditional picks are on the best propane fan heater page. The plate, the hose and the room decide it.

Common questions

What do I connect first?
The hose and the correct regulator, cylinder still closed, then the leak check, then the fan lead. Open the gas only when the joints are made and the heater is clear of the bottle. Sealey’s manual, which is that model’s order, starts lighting with the fan already on. Do not open the cylinder and then hunt for a socket.
Which way does the cylinder nut turn?
Left-hand to tighten on a UK POL connection. Flogas describes an anticlockwise nip finished with a spanner. Clockwise often undoes it. Start by hand. If the thread will not start, as in the DAHTEC reviews where the hose or the adaptor did not fit, stop and get the right fitting.
How do I check for a leak?
Brush soapy water on the joints with gas available and the heater valve closed. Continuing bubbles mean a leak: shut the cylinder, remake the joint and test again. Do not use a naked flame. If the bubbles will not stop, leave it shut and get help.
Why does the flame die when I let go?
The sensor may not be hot yet, the bottle may be empty, or air may still be in a new hose. Hold the valve as your manual says. Sealey’s sheet says about 10 seconds. These four listings do not state a time. If it dies every time you release, stop. Do not wedge the button or bypass the sensor.
How do I turn it off?
Close the cylinder first, let the fan clear the heat, then switch the fan off, if that is what your sheet says. Sealey uses about 30 seconds of fan after the gas is closed. The listings do not print that figure. Do not leave the cylinder open overnight.
Can I use a match if the piezo fails?
No. A match puts your face at the outlet and skips the sensor step. Shut the cylinder, unplug the fan, and replace the igniter or have a competent person look at it. A frost-covered bottle is a separate fault: use a larger cylinder, and do not heat the bottle.
