Portable charcoal barbecue buying guide

Updated: 16.10.2026

You are comparing folding charcoal barbecues under £35 on amazon.co.uk, and the listing in front of you may not agree with itself. One line prints a folded size, another a 5 cm cube, and a third a carry case that a review says never arrived. This portable charcoal barbecue buying guide is the order to read those lines in, before a party-size claim does the deciding. The eleven listings, from £8.99 to £34.99, sit on the [portable grill comparison](/hub/portable-grills/portable-grill). The Products Compared editorial team compiled this from those amazon.co.uk files on 15 October 2026, without a lab cook. What you are actually buying

A portable charcoal barbecue in this folder is a reusable tray or bowl that burns charcoal and folds or collapses. Ten of the eleven files are lidless folding trays. The Odoland, at £34.99 and 2.2 kg, is the exception: the bullets also sell it as a fire pit and, in places, as a wood fire. Gas canisters, lidded kettles and foil trays share the word portable on other UK pages, and they are not in this set. The Independent's 2026 portable piece runs from about £14 to £500 and names grills that are not these ASINs. Good Housekeeping's UK buying guide says cheaper charcoal portables are often unsteady, prone to rust, and sold without a windshield. Nothing in these fields states a lid.

Five checks, in order

Start with fuel. Every kept listing says charcoal, and the Odoland bullets also mention wood. A smoke control area does not, by itself, ban an outdoor barbecue, because GOV.UK restricts chimney smoke rather than a garden tray. Pack size comes next. Empty weights run from about 410 g on the WINB to 2.81 kg on the Rammento. Discard a 25 mm cube or a 5 cm cube on a grill over a kilogram. A usable fold looks like the Charmline's 23 x 34.7 x 7.6 cm or the AGM's folded 43.3 x 29.5 x 6.0 cm. Then the case. Charmline and CUQOO list one, and the CUQOO at £12.59 also lists a cover. Kizmyee, AGM, WixbFyn, iHomara and Minxchen do not list one. For air, AGM and Minxchen mention five vents, and WixbFyn claims four heat levels without a vent count in the fields. Last, outdoor only. None states BS EN 1860-1:2024, and the iHomara's indoor bullet is not a clearance.

Where these listings disagree with themselves

The iHomara uses the same TL-372 string at £11.16, with 176.52 square inches against the Kizmyee's 176.12. Different ASIN, brand and price: reading one does not judge the other. The green Charmline at £25.34 says assembly is required in the field and no installation in the bullets. The black one at £22.34 says no assembly. Both show 4.6 from 781 reviews and the same review text, so that is one corpus. The WixbFyn's unfolded bullet of 71.2 x 16.3 x 20.5 cm does not match its item fields, and nobody remeasured it. A missing case is a description problem under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a magazine score. The Rammento lists a case, one of three UK reviews says it never arrived, on a line of 4.2 from 4 reviews.

When this price band is the wrong buy

Shelf prices in the files, not a live basket on 15 October 2026, run from the WINB at £8.99 up to the Odoland at £34.99. Under £16 is where bowed grates, sharp edges and unusable size fields cluster. Leave the band when you need a lid or a grate for more than a couple of people. The Kizmyee's number 1 in Portable Barbecues is a sales rank beside 4.1 from 1,715 reviews.

Common questions

How big a folding grill do I need for two people?
For two people, use a stated cooking area rather than a feeds-six line. The Charmline lists 667 cm² and the CUQOO lists 96 square inches, a little under that. The Kizmyee and iHomara fields are about 176 square inches. The AGM claims 5-7 people, and its reviews more often call it compact. If the area is missing, as on the WixbFyn, measure the grate when it arrives.
Should I trust the weight and the folded size on the listing?
Trust a size only when the item field and the bullets describe the same object. The Charmline's 23 x 34.7 x 7.6 cm is that kind of line. The WINB's 25 mm cube and the Minxchen's 5 cm cube are not, because both grills weigh well over a kilogram. The Kizmyee is 1.29 kg in the field and 1.6 kg in the bullets. Charcoal is extra, and none of these files weighs a fuel load.
Is a carry case actually included?
Only if the included-components line says so, and even then a review can contradict it. Charmline and CUQOO list a case, and the CUQOO also lists a cover. The Rammento lists a case, and one of three UK reviews says it was not in the box. A bag mentioned only in the Odoland bullets, against a frying tray in the components field, is not a case you can count on.
Does stainless steel in the bullet mean it will not rust or bend?
No. Good Housekeeping warns that cheaper charcoal portables are prone to rust, and a stainless bullet does not overturn that. The Kizmyee says 430 stainless steel in the bullets and iron with chrome-plated mesh in the material field, and reviewers report a grate that bows. The Odoland title says 304 stainless steel while the material field says alloy steel. The metal line is a claim.
Do I need a lid?
You need a lid if you want a hood against wind or to cook with the cover down. This set does not state one. Live for the Outdoors treats a lid as part of the heavier car-camping style. A missing lid also means no windshield on these comparison fields. Rain and gusts will still reach a lidless tray, however small it folds.
Is no assembly reliable when another field says assembly is required?
No. Read both lines. The green Charmline's assembly field says yes and its bullets say no installation is required. The black Charmline's field says no. The Kizmyee field says no assembly, and reviews still mention sharp edges while putting it together. Fewer parts is all that line can mean until you open the box.
