Wide mouth skimmer buying guide

Updated: 16.10.2026

You are beside a rigid above-ground pool, with a cracked white housing and amazon.co.uk listings that all say wide mouth. This wide mouth skimmer buying guide is the measurement and the box list, so the hole and the parts come before the brand. The [wide mouth skimmers comparison](/hub/pool-care/wide-mouth-skimmer) holds the seven prices and ratings. You should know whether you are replacing a wide cutout you already have, or shopping a rectangle for a square hole. The Products Compared editorial team lined these listings up on 16 October 2026. There is no soak test. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the opening you already have

Measure the hole on the inside face of the wall, where the liner and the faceplate meet. The white housing outside is often larger than the cut the plate has to cover. Take the width, the height, and a count of the screw holes. Royal Swimming Pools, a US retailer, puts a standard mouth near 5 7/8 by 5 3/8 inches and a wide mouth near 5 1/8 by 11 1/2 inches. Doheny prints 5 3/8 by 11 3/4 inches on an 18-hole plate. Those inches are seller statements. No British Standard in these sources sets the mouth size, so your tape wins when they disagree. A wide faceplate will not cover a square hole. If that opening is still square, the next decision is on the wide mouth vs standard skimmer page, and you stay with a standard mouth unless the liner is already coming off.

What the listings actually state

The seven kept listings do not print one shared cutout. FixIdea, at about £89.33 with 4.5 from 32 reviews, states an inner opening of 11 15/16 inches wide by 5 5/16 inches high, and an outer of 13 9/16 by 7 9/16 inches. TonGass, at about £102.60 with 4.6 from 42 reviews, states a 14 by 7 3/4 inch cutout and tells you to measure yours. One review on that listing says the size was wrong for the pool even so. Hayward’s SP1091WM, at about £116.11 with 4.7 from 2,241 reviews, is listed for above-ground pools with a wide top seat. The amazon.co.uk bullets do not print a cutout. The plain Hydrotools 8939, the assembled HydroTools listing, the 8939A kit, and Swimline 89401 leave the cutout unstated.

What has to be in the box

A useful box names the body, the wide throat, the faceplate, the gasket, the basket, the weir, the lid, and the screws. Add a return and a vacuum plate only when the pool still needs them. FixIdea lists those parts, a vacuum plate for a 1.25 or 1.5 inch hose, a hose adapter, a return, and 32 stainless screws. It does not include a shut-off valve. TonGass names a basket, a lid, an eyeball return, and two 1.5 inch connectors. The plain Hydrotools 8939, at about £67.52 with 4.4 from 1,274 reviews, does not itemise those extras. That price is the best value here when you already have a gasket and hose fittings. Hayward’s own SP1091WM page says 1 1/2 inch female straight pipe thread. Reviews on cheaper listings describe adapters that bottom out. The screw order is on the how to install a wide mouth skimmer page.

What this skimmer is not

UK shops often lead with a different shelf. Plastica’s ENS110 is an above-ground widemouth with a 1.5 inch outlet and a stated 2.8 kg, and the copy used here has no price. Clearway’s £62.50 skimmer comes in a standard mouth or a wide mouth, so that figure is not a wide-only amazon.co.uk price. Emaux’s EM0140, at £149.99, is an in-ground wide mouth. Floating skimmers, rail hangers, and winter plates are other products. Match the inside opening, then the listing that names the parts you still need.

Common questions

Are the TonGass and FixIdea openings the same size?
FixIdea states an inner opening of 11 15/16 by 5 5/16 inches. TonGass states 14 by 7 3/4 inches, and one review says that size missed the pool. Buy the claim that matches your inside face. An average of the two will not meet the screws you already have.
Is Plastica’s ENS110 the same part as the Hayward SP1091WM?
Plastica’s ENS110 is a UK shop widemouth with a 1.5 inch outlet and a stated 2.8 kg, and the copy used here has no price. The Hayward on amazon.co.uk is a separate listing at about £116.11 for a wide top seat. Clearway’s £62.50 skimmer is sold in both mouths, so that price is not a Hayward price either.
Does 1.5 inch on the title mean my old barb will seal?
It means a hose size was printed. Hayward’s own page specifies 1 1/2 inch female straight pipe thread, which is not the same as every Amazon title. Reviews describe adapters that bottom out until the old connectors go back on. Keep the barb that already sealed until the new thread holds.
Should I buy wide if the wall is still square?
Keep a standard mouth while the hole is square. A wide plate does not swap onto that cut. Enlarging it means cutting the wall and usually a new liner, which makes sense when the liner is already coming off. This guide is for matching a hole you have.
Is the Hydrotools 8939 a complete kit at about £67.52?
It is the lowest price here, at 4.4 from 1,274 reviews, and it does not itemise a gasket, a return, a vacuum plate, or a lid. Treat it as a body for a known hole and budget for the missing parts. If those parts must be named before you pay, use a kit that lists them.
