Above ground pool heater: cover first, then a mat or 2.8 kW

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a frame pool or an inflatable. An above ground pool heater for that pool is a small class: a cover, a solar mat on the ground, or a 2.8 kW inline heater if the volume and the pump match. A plant-room boiler is the wrong object, and a mains rod in a paddling pool someone is using is the wrong object too. The nine listings are on the [Pool heater](/hub/pool-care/pool-heater) comparison. The order of questions is the [pool heater buying guide](/hub/pool-care/pool-heater/sub/pool-heater-buying-guide). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. There was no lab heat test.

Why these pools cool down

A storable pool has thin walls and a wide surface. SPATA treats evaporation as the main loss, and a cover as the control. Their notes say a cover can save as much as 80% of surface loss. That figure is theirs, not a test of your frame pool. A cover does not heat cold water, and it does not replace a mat in sun or an element on a grey day. A permanently installed pool is outside Intex’s mat instructions.

Mats and the 2.8 kW heater on a frame or inflatable pool

Three listings here say above-ground. The Bestway at £139.99 is 2.8 kW, 3.3 from 121, with an RCD and a water sensor. The manual aims at about 15 foot and smaller, flow capped at 3,785 litres per hour. One copy says 17,035 litres and another 18,930. A stronger pump is the mismatch, beep included. The Intex mats at £17.99 and £24.49 state storable pools up to, or under, 30,280 litres, and about 3–5 °C if the weather agrees. An 8-foot to 12-foot pool fits one mat, sometimes two. The £24.49 page prints 32 mm and 38 mm. Who to skip is on best pool heater UK.

Paddling pools

A paddling pool is a few hundred litres and a child, not a small 2.8 kW heater. Royal Life Saving Society garden guidance wants an adult within arm’s reach, the pool emptied after use, and no water left out. A heater does not replace that. Do not tip in boiled water, and do not lower a £30 rod into a pool a child is using. The Ginger Tech file, 3.0 from 39, includes a hot plug and trips. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has recalled other immersion heaters, different ASINs, because water can become live. The VCYEX at £60.89 is 4.8 from 5, wattage not stated, with two reviews on about 600 litres. People stay out while it runs.

When the pool is too big for this page

Stop when the pool is permanently installed, larger than the about-15-foot aim, or on a pump over 3,785 litres per hour. A second mat does not turn 2.8 kW into a season-long heater. A heat pump is the neighbouring category. This page will not size one or invent a price. Inside 15 foot, with a modest pump and a cover, stay here: cover, then the mat if sun is your timetable, then the 2.8 kW heater only if flow and diameter both fit. Mat against element is electric pool heater vs solar mat.

Common questions

Will the Bestway heat a 15-foot pool?
The manual aims at about 15 foot and smaller, with flow at or under 3,785 litres per hour. You are at the top of that aim. The listing claims around 1 °C an hour, and the manual about 0.5–1.5 °C. Two copies disagree on litres, 17,035 and 18,930. Do not average them. A cover is what keeps the rise overnight.
Does an inflatable pool need a different heater from a frame pool?
No, if both are storable above-ground pools with a filter pump. The Intex mats state that storable class, up to about 30,280 litres. The Bestway states above-ground pools and then limits flow and diameter in the manual. The difference is litres and pump flow, not the word inflatable. A pool with no pump cannot run either the mat or the inline heater.
How many mats does a small pool need?
One mat is the usual match for an 8-foot to 12-foot pool in the review pattern, sometimes two if you have the ground and Intex’s valve order. A single mat on a much larger pool will disappoint, especially under cloud. The £24.49 listing is the one that prints hose sizes if you are adding a second mat and need 32 mm or 38 mm to meet.
Should the cover go on before I buy a heater?
Yes. The pool is losing heat at the surface whether or not you own a heater. SPATA treats evaporation as the main loss and a cover as the control, with their own as much as 80% wording for that saving. The cover will not heat cold water by itself. It stops you wasting the next purchase.
Can I heat a paddling pool with a £30 rod?
Not while anyone is in it. A £27.89 to £43 rod is a mains immersion heater, several of them with no review line, and this product class has shock recalls on other ASINs. Empty the pool after play, keep an adult within arm’s reach, and do not add boiling water. An edge heater some buyers tried on about 600 litres is still not a reason to leave a live element in occupied water.
Is a permanent in-ground pool in this page’s scope?
No. Intex’s mat instructions are for storable pools, not a permanently installed pool. The Bestway manual is the 15-foot, 3,785 litres-per-hour class. An in-ground pool with a plant room is a different heater, usually a heat pump, and it is outside these nine listings.
When do I stop and look at a heat pump?
When the diameter, the litres or the season no longer fit 2.8 kW and a 1.2 m mat. A long British season on a large frame pool is that moment. Use the pool heat pump comparison for the machine. Do not stretch the Bestway and call it the same job.
