Best pool filter sand for a UK domestic filter

Updated: 16.10.2026

You searched for the best pool filter sand because you want one sack to order, and the results are mostly fibre balls. By the end you should have a rule for a domestic sand filter, and an exit if the manual asks for glass or for balls. Best here means 16/30 silica that matches the tank’s kilograms and the millimetre band the manual allows. The six packs on the [filter sand comparison](/hub/pool-care/filter-sand), £3.99 to £13.99, are fibre balls. The Products Compared editorial team checked those listings, UK shop pages and PWTAG Technical Note 50 on 15 October 2026. Why this page will not name a winning brand

A winning brand needs comparable bags. The files checked on 15 October 2026 contained no 25 kg sack of silica. PoolStore, Automated Environmental Systems and h2ofun each sell their own 16/30 bag and present it as the right media. None of them publishes a panel test against the others. Crowning one of the six ball packs would answer a different query from the one you typed. The practical rule is shorter than a brand ranking. Read the manual for the grade and the fill weight, then buy that weight of 16/30 from a shop whose sack prints the grade and the millimetres.

The sand that fits a domestic filter

On 15 October 2026 a 25 kg bag of 16/30 was £22.50 at Pool Tech Services, £22.95 at h2ofun, £24 at Automated Environmental Systems and £26 including VAT at PoolStore. The millimetre line still has to match. h2ofun and Pool Tech Services print 0.4–0.8 mm on bags they call 16/30. Holcim prints 0.5–1.0 mm for the same grade name. Bestway asks for about 0.45–0.85 mm. A bag that misses the band your manual states is the wrong purchase even when the grade name looks right. Fill weight is the second half. PoolStore’s examples run from 50 kg, two bags, to 425 kg, 17 bags. The Intex SX925 listing asks for 6.5 kg of silica, not included, so one shop bag is more than that tank and you stop at the label. No amazon.co.uk silica-bag price was in this set. A contradictory listing is explained on the pool filter sand buying guide.

Who should not buy that bag

Leave the 16/30 sack when the manual names glass, or when it names a gram quantity of fibre balls. Glass is still a granular bed you backwash, sold in its own grades rather than as 16/30. Prices and grade wording are on the glass filter media versus sand page. Balls are taken out and washed. Poolpro’s page for Intex 29045 lists 200 g of those balls for an SX925 and up to 1,500 g for larger Intex pumps. That chart is not in the amazon.co.uk file for 29045, whose bullets claim a 500 g bag replaces 18 kg of silica. If you want balls, use a chart for your pump and the filter balls versus sand page. An Intex owner whose book says 6.5 kg of silica buys that weight of 16/30. An owner whose book specifies balls leaves this page.

Claims that are not a test

Micron lines travel well in adverts and poorly as results. Automated Environmental Systems claims capture to 20 microns and a life of three to five years on its 25 kg sand page. parts4tubs prints a 20–40 micron sentence and 0.5–1.0 mm. A Windspeed ball bullet claims 3–5 microns. Each line is that seller’s sentence. They were not produced by one shared test, and this comparison added no lab. Shops that mention sand life more loosely put it at about three to six years. Buy the grade the manual names, in the weight it names, from a sack that prints both. If the manual is missing, or sand keeps returning after the grade and the level are right, ask a pool engineer.

Common questions

Which brand of filter sand is best?
No sand brand can be named from this amazon.co.uk set, because the kept listings are fibre balls and the shop pages we checked do not publish a comparison test. The bag that fits a domestic sand filter is 16/30 silica to the kilograms on the tank, with the millimetre band the manual allows. On 15 October 2026 those 25 kg bags were £22.50 to £26 at the four shops named above.
Is a dearer 25 kg bag a better sand?
A higher shelf price, among the bags checked that day, is not a fineness result. Pool Tech Services was £22.50 and PoolStore was £26 including VAT, and both are sold as 16/30. h2ofun at £22.95 prints 0.4–0.8 mm, while Holcim prints 0.5–1.0 mm for the same grade name. Match the manual. Carriage, such as the extra carriage All Swim notes, can matter as much as the gap between two of those shelf prices.
Is glass better than sand?
Glass can cost less or more than sand on the same day, and it uses its own grades rather than the name 16/30. PWTAG names glass as the other common media and, in the public text, does not declare a winner. Buy glass when the manual allows that media and names a grade. A micron slogan stays a seller claim unless the manual repeats it.
Are filter balls better than the best sand?
Balls are a different cleaning job. You take them out and wash them, while a silica bed stays in the tank and is backwashed. The six listings claim different sand equivalents, and those claims disagree. Poolpro’s Intex chart, not an average of the slogans, is the gram guide an Intex owner can actually use. Stay with 16/30 when you will lift the bags and backwash. Switch only when you know the grams your pump wants.
What should an Intex owner buy?
If the manual, or the SX925 listing’s 6.5 kg note, is your instruction, buy that weight of the silica grade it allows. A whole 25 kg sack is more than that tank holds. If you are moving to Intex 29045 balls, Poolpro lists 200 g for an SX925 and up to 1,500 g for larger Intex pumps. The Amazon bullets claim 500 g replaces 18 kg of silica. That is a listing claim. Intex also rules out play sand and beach sand.
